The listing says the app was updated October 2, 2026. The attention around the feature followed a surge in MapQuest usage. 9to5Google reported on September 2, 2026 that MapQuest characterized the surge as “roughly 50 times its normal rate” and said its chart position was the highest in the brand’s 30-year history. How to get MapQuest on your car display
- Install or update MapQuest. Find MapQuest in Google Play and install it or apply any available update. Google says Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones, so you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app. Google’s Android Auto setup guide.
- Connect your phone to the car. For wired Android Auto, Google requires a compatible phone and car or stereo, an active data plan, and a high-quality USB cable. Put the car in Park, connect the cable, and follow the prompts on the car display and phone. - Look for MapQuest in the Android Auto launcher. If it appears, open it from the car display and follow its prompts. Only interact with the display when parked; Google says entering a destination on the car screen requires the vehicle to be in Park. Google’s turn-by-turn navigation guidance.
Why MapQuest may not appear in Android Auto
- The rollout may not have reached your setup. The September 2026 coverage describes the feature as experimental. Installing the latest app does not establish that it will appear on every phone or vehicle.

- Confirm your car and connection are compatible. Android Auto compatibility varies by vehicle and stereo. Check the car maker’s compatibility information; for wireless use, verify that both the phone and vehicle support it. Google recommends a high-quality cable under one metre for wired connections and suggests trying the phone maker’s cable or a certified cable. What MapQuest offers—and what remains uncertain
MapQuest’s Play listing says it offers navigation, traffic information, route alternatives, route preferences and routes with multiple stops. Google describes Android Auto’s broader navigation experience as including voice guidance, estimated arrival times, live traffic and lane guidance when using Google Maps or another compatible navigation app. That platform-level description should not be taken as a feature list for MapQuest’s experimental integration.
If you are choosing between MapQuest and another navigation app, compare the specific capabilities you need—such as planning several stops, saved places, traffic information and whether the app appears on your own car display. The available information does not include a controlled head-to-head test, so it cannot establish that MapQuest is more accurate, faster, safer or better than Google Maps or Waze.

Is the MapQuest app free?
MapQuest’s official site describes its iOS and Android app as free and says an account is not required. Google Play labels the Android app as containing ads and in-app purchases, so a free download should not be read as a promise of an ad-free experience or that every in-app feature is free.
