The exact steps can vary by model, so check your washer’s use-and-care manual before you leave. Turning off the water can help prevent flooding from a pressure surge, but it does not eliminate every possible leak.
What to do before you leave
- Finish the wash and remove laundry. Make sure no cycle is running before you go.
- Turn off the washer’s water supply. Whirlpool Product Help recommends this to avoid flooding due to a water-pressure surge. Whirlpool’s washer-care guidance also advises turning off the supply when the washer will not be used for a period.
- Disconnect power as your manual directs. An LG washer manual says to turn off the water taps and unplug the washer if it will be left unused for an extended period, such as during vacations. Whirlpool gives similar advice for its covered washer. Use the method specified for your model.
Check the inlet hoses
Look for bulges, kinks, cuts, visible wear, or leaks. Whirlpool recommends replacing inlet hoses after five years of use, or sooner if inspection shows damage. This is a maintenance recommendation—not a reason every traveler needs to buy hoses before a trip. If replacement is needed, confirm the hoses fit your washer’s connections and model.

If freezing temperatures are possible
Winter storage requires more than ordinary vacation preparation: water left inside the washer can freeze and damage it. Follow the model-specific winterization instructions rather than assuming that unplugging and shutting off the taps are enough. Whirlpool’s winterization guidance describes this as a separate procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy unplug it—and what is not established
The manufacturer instructions reviewed recommend disconnecting power for extended non-use, including vacations. They do not quantify a reduction in fire risk or establish a vacation-related washer-fire rate, so unplugging should not be presented as a measured level of fire protection. The guidance also does not establish one rule for every washer or a minimum trip length; follow your own model’s manual.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Automatic Induction Protection: Protect your electrical devices by interrupting the current flow from voltage spikes, instant surge, voltage fluctuation, brownout, and that voltage which are too high or too low. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately
- Delay Function: If the device encounters (electric power) voltage fluctuations, it will protect the appliance by providing the output until the voltage stabilizes. The “DELAY” indicator would be turned on to inform its user. The appliance would be delayed for 3 mins to confirm that the voltage is stable so that it could be re-established.
- Working Principle: As there is an interruption in the current flow, the Voltage surge protector gives an interval of 3 minutes to allow the voltage to stabilize. Additionally, the Voltage surge protector provides protection against voltage spikes that can damage electrical equipment.
- Applicable Equipment: The voltage (surge) protector suit for Air Conditioners, Freezers, Ice Makers, Washing Machines, or any Large Appliances.
- LED INDICATOR: Light indicators for Normal(Output), High(Overvoltage), Low(Undervoltage), and Delay

Rank #3
- Surge protection: Protects against high and low voltage, brownouts, spikes, instant surges, power failures, voltage fluctuations, and load shedding. High voltage shutoff is at (140 VAC) and low voltage shutoff is at (90 VAC)
- Usage: Recommended for front and top load washing machines. This dedicated surge protector will prevent damage, ensuring that your washer is safe from power spikes
- Delay Period Indicator: Illuminates when the Lavamatic is first plugged into the outlet or after a power outage
- Light indicators: Light indicators for Normal, High, Low Voltage and Time Delay
- Waiting time: 3 minutes before plugging in your appliance the first time you use it. This indicator will also turn on after a high voltage event, signaling that the protector will cut off power for 30 seconds for protection
Rank #2
- SURGE PROTECTION: Our protector ensures that your washing machine and appliances are safeguarded from high voltage, low voltage, power outages, peak currents, surges, blackouts, voltage fluctuations, and load changes. This extends the lifespan of your equipment and reduces maintenance costs.
- DUAL OUTLETS: Our protector features two outlets, protecting two appliances simultaneously. It's not limited to just washing machines; it's compatible with various appliances like refrigerators, microwaves, water dispensers, and dishwashers. This enhances convenience and saves you the cost of purchasing additional protectors.
- CLEAR INDICATOR LIGHTS: Our protector has simple indicator lights for normal, high voltage, low voltage, and delay statuses. If the power voltage exceeds the safe range, it will automatically cut off the power, and the corresponding indicator light will activate. This allows you to immediately understand the current protection and voltage status.
- SMART 3-MINUTE DELAY: After a voltage fluctuation, our protector includes a smart 3-minute delay. This ensures that reconnection only happens when the power is completely stable. This feature prevents your devices from repeatedly turning on and off during voltage changes and protects them from potential surges when power is restored after a blackout.
- USER-FRIENDLY: With a plug-and-play design, installation is straightforward. Once plugged in, it occupies minimal space and doesn't interfere with the normal use of other outlets.
