Yes—Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra supports genlock over USB-C for virtual-production workflows. It can coordinate a display playing a changing background with camera capture, helping keep recorded frames aligned. It is not a general editing-speed boost, and the Mac alone is not a complete genlock system: Apple’s setup also calls for a compatible dock, sync generator, cabling, camera and variable-refresh-rate (VRR) display.
What genlock does on Mac Studio
In virtual production, performers are filmed against a dynamic video background shown on a display. Genlock provides a shared timing reference so the background playback and camera capture stay coordinated. Apple says proper synchronization can make frames align for frame-accurate edits and reduce manual frame-by-frame alignment.

Apple identifies genlock support over USB-C on Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra. The feature is part of the computer’s USB-C/Thunderbolt 5 connectivity; it does not mean that a sync generator or compatible dock can be omitted. Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement describes synchronization between a display and professional camera capture, including iPhone 17 Pro.

- A Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra running macOS 27 Golden Gate.
- A display that supports VRR; Apple gives a large-screen OLED television or projector as examples.
- A compatible USB-C dock with genlock input and output for the Mac and each iPhone. Apple names Blackmagic Camera ProDock as an example.
- A genlock-capable sync generator and BNC cables. A BNC splitter is optional when connecting multiple devices.
- A genlock-capable camera and camera app. Apple lists iPhone 17 Pro or later Pro models running iOS 26 or later, with the latest Final Cut Camera or a compatible third-party app such as Blackmagic Camera. Third-party cameras that support genlock are another option.
Connect the Mac to the display over HDMI or USB-C/Thunderbolt. External SSD storage for iPhone footage is optional. Apple’s virtual-production setup guide describes these components and supported-device requirements.

How to configure sync and the display
- Connect the sync chain. Connect the genlock-capable sync generator to the compatible dock and connect the dock to the Mac. For each iPhone in the documented arrangement, use a dock with genlock input and output; a BNC splitter may be used when appropriate for connecting multiple devices.
- Set the timing reference. Set the generator’s frame rate to match the iPhone’s recording frame rate. The recording and display resolutions do not have to match. Apple recommends tri-level sync for progressive video when available.
- Use a compatible capture app. Select the latest Final Cut Camera or a compatible third-party app that supports genlock. In a typical wireless multicamera setup, each iPhone needs its own sync receiver.
- Enable low-latency VRR behavior on the display. Apple recommends Game Mode or a similar VRR mode. Turn off motion enhancement, noise reduction, super resolution and black-frame insertion, which can add latency and affect synchronization.
The selected Genlock refresh rate on the Mac adjusts to the display’s VRR operating range. For example, Apple says a display outputting 60 Hz may still be synchronized to a 30 Hz reference. Certain apps can adjust for display delay, but Apple notes that this can create ghosting.
Which Mac Studio model makes sense?
Both M5 Max and M5 Ultra support the genlock feature; genlock alone is not a reason to buy the Ultra. Base the choice on the rest of the production workload, including video streams and codecs, rendering and effects, memory needs, number of displays and budget.

Apple’s technical specifications list different video-engine configurations for the two models. The display limits and feature support are listed on Apple’s Mac Studio technical specifications page. Apple announced US starting prices of $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra, with customer availability beginning September 22, 2026. Those are launch prices, not guaranteed current quotes; actual pricing depends on country and configuration.

Genlock coordinates timing; it does not itself establish faster editing, rendering or effects performance. Apple separately claims up to 33 simultaneous streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 fps for M5 Ultra and up to 3x faster Magic Mask performance in DaVinci Resolve Studio versus M4 Max. Those are Apple’s product-performance claims, not measurements of synchronization accuracy or proof that genlock makes editing faster.
