Generally, yes: GST applies to a taxable cloud-hosting service supplied to an Indian customer, but the correct tax treatment depends on who actually supplied it, where the supplier and customer are located, the customer’s GST registration and receiving establishment, and the invoice. A foreign supplier may mean an import of services subject to IGST if the statutory conditions are met. The fact that the hosting supports a YouTube live stream does not, by itself, change the analysis.
First identify who billed you
A cloud brand may contract and bill through an Indian entity or a foreign entity. The brand name alone is not enough to determine the tax treatment: check the legal supplier named on the contract and invoice, along with its location and any GSTIN shown. The customer’s location and GST status also matter. The IGST Act sets out the place-of-supply framework.

If an Indian supplier bills an Indian customer
For a service supplied in India to a recipient in India, section 12 of the IGST Act generally applies. For a registered recipient, the place of supply for services outside specified exceptions is the recipient’s location. For an unregistered recipient, the recipient’s address on record is used if available; otherwise, the supplier’s location is used. The supplier’s location and place of supply together determine whether the supply is intra-State or inter-State.

Accordingly, GST will generally apply to a taxable domestic cloud-hosting service. The available facts do not establish a specific rate for this service classification, or whether a particular customer’s bill should show CGST and SGST or IGST. Do not infer the correct tax lines without the supplier and recipient details.

If a foreign supplier bills an Indian customer
Section 2(11) of the IGST Act defines an import of services using three conditions: the supplier is outside India, the recipient is in India, and the place of supply is in India. Under section 13’s general cross-border rule, the place of supply is the recipient’s location unless a specified exception applies. Imported services are treated as inter-State supplies under section 7.
CBIC’s IT/ITES FAQs say that IGST is payable in their example of foreign software supplied to an Indian business when the import conditions apply; they also say the currency used for payment does not change that result. This is relevant guidance, not a determination of every cloud-hosting invoice. Confirm the invoicing supplier, recipient and service facts before applying it to your bill.
Why the 2024 data-hosting circular does not exempt your bill
CBIC Circular 232/26/2024-GST, dated 10 September 2024, concerns a different transaction: an Indian data-hosting provider supplying services to an overseas cloud-computing provider. CBIC concluded that, in the described arrangement, the Indian provider was supplying hosting on its own account rather than acting as an intermediary, and that the service was not directly related to immovable property. It said the place of supply was the overseas recipient’s location and that the service could qualify as an export if the other statutory conditions were met. Read the circular.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat conclusion is about an Indian provider’s supply to an overseas cloud company. It is not an exemption for an Indian customer buying cloud hosting. Whether the Indian customer’s own bill is taxed must be assessed from that customer’s transaction facts.
Check these details on the invoice
- Supplier: legal name and location of the entity that supplied the service, plus any GSTIN shown.
- Customer details: billing address, GST registration status, and which establishment received the service.
- Service description: what hosting or cloud service the invoice actually covers.
- Tax line: the tax charged and the invoice details supporting that treatment.
CBIC’s invoice-rule material includes special endorsements for exports, but it cannot establish the treatment of an individual cloud bill without the contract and invoice. If a charge is disputed or material, ask the vendor which entity supplied the service and why GST was charged. A business should have its GST practitioner review the actual documents and confirm any import, registration or input-tax-credit treatment rather than relying on the tax line alone.
Does the YouTube streaming use change the tax answer?
No special GST conclusion follows simply because the hosting is used to keep a YouTube stream live. This question concerns the cloud-hosting service bill, not GST on YouTube itself or on revenue earned from a creator’s stream. Assess the hosting supplier-customer transaction on its own facts.

Using a cloud service to keep a YouTube channel live
StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: you upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live while it loops from the cloud. It streams to YouTube only. The GST treatment of any particular StreamNeo charge still depends on the supplier and invoice details described above; this article does not determine the tax treatment of an individual bill.
