If your OBS stream disconnects exactly when Windows enters connected standby, keep the PC awake during the broadcast. Windows manages network activity in Modern Standby, and “connected” does not guarantee that OBS will keep encoding and sending video as it does while the computer is awake. Check the power state first; investigate bitrate or other network causes if the disconnect also happens while Windows stays awake.
Why OBS disconnects when Windows sleeps
OBS needs a running encoder and a live connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server. Modern Standby is a low-power state in which Windows manages network activity; depending on the device and circumstances, it may allow supported network activity or quiesce it. Microsoft says Adaptive Connected Standby became the connectivity default on Modern Standby systems starting with Windows 10 version 2004. That does not mean every application, including OBS, continues running normally during sleep.

In Microsoft’s words, “Otherwise the system will quiesce network activity during sleep, while providing instant connectivity upon resume.” The documentation describes Windows networking during sleep, not a guarantee that an OBS stream encoder will remain active. Microsoft’s Modern Standby networking documentation explains the distinction.
First determine whether standby is the trigger
Note whether the stream ends at the moment the screen goes dark, the lid closes, or Windows enters sleep. If the timing is consistent, start with power and standby behavior rather than changing OBS bitrate settings at random. OBS describes general dropped frames and disconnections as connection instability between the computer and the remote ingest server; that is the more relevant path if failures also occur while the PC remains awake.

| When the disconnect happens | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Only when Windows enters standby | Sleep timeout, laptop lid action, and the device’s standby/network state. |
| While Windows remains awake too | Upload stability, OBS connection evidence, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, VPN or security software, drivers, and router or ISP issues. |
Keep Windows awake during the broadcast
- Check the sleep trigger. Determine whether sleep begins after inactivity or when you close a laptop lid. Review Windows power and sleep settings and, on a laptop, the lid-close action. Labels and choices vary by Windows release and device, so use the settings available on your PC rather than relying on a universal menu path.
- Prevent sleep for the stream. Set the applicable sleep timeout so the computer stays awake for the entire broadcast. If closing the lid causes standby, keep it open or change the lid action if your device offers an appropriate option. Keep the PC powered as needed for the planned stream duration.
- Confirm the actual sleep state. Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run
powercfg /a. This reports the sleep states supported by the system. On Modern Standby devices, look for whether S0 Low Power Idle is reported as network connected or network disconnected. The result helps identify the configured standby state; it does not establish that OBS can stream through sleep. - Review standby-session details if needed. Microsoft documents the System Power Report and SleepStudy for investigating standby behavior. Run
powercfg /spras documented for the System Power Report, then consult the generated report and SleepStudy information for details such as whether a standby session was connected. See Microsoft’s Modern Standby diagnostics overview.
If OBS disconnects while the PC stays awake
When sleep is not involved, follow the ordinary connection troubleshooting path. OBS’s guidance treats these checks as diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.
- Check upload stability and bitrate. Confirm that your available upload capacity is stable enough for the stream’s configured bitrate. A nominal speed reading alone may not reveal intermittent instability.
- Compare Wi-Fi with wired networking. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Ethernet may help diagnose a Wi-Fi problem, but it does not stop Windows from entering standby.
- Temporarily isolate software in the network path. VPNs, security software, and network-optimization or prioritization utilities can affect connections. Test carefully, following your security software’s guidance, and restore protections after diagnosis.
- Check drivers and the network equipment. Network adapter drivers, the router, and the ISP are among the possible causes OBS identifies. Look for a change in connection behavior rather than assuming any one item is responsible.
- Compare OBS evidence with YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, checking the encoder, and testing outbound internet connectivity. Its stream troubleshooting guidance can help distinguish an encoder or outbound-connection issue from a Windows power-state issue.
For OBS-specific connection checks, see OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.

What YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control whether a broadcast starts or stops when streaming begins or ends from the encoder. They are broadcast-lifecycle controls, not Windows power settings; they do not prevent the PC from sleeping or keep OBS running in standby. Use them only to manage the broadcast behavior described in YouTube’s stream settings documentation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you need a pre-recorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a PC on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
