It also says Grab may use “AI services” and may disclose personal data to broad groups of providers, but it does not name OpenAI. OpenAI’s own privacy and location policies explain what OpenAI does with data it receives; they do not establish that Grab supplies it.
What the current policies actually establish
The key distinction is between collection and disclosure. Grab’s notice describes information it collects and broad categories of parties that may receive it. It does not identify OpenAI as a recipient or vendor. A statement that Grab uses AI therefore cannot, by itself, be read as proof that OpenAI processes Grab data.

Does Grab share your chats with OpenAI?
What Grab says it collects
Grab’s notice includes support chats, messages and calls among information users may provide. It also covers interaction with other users through in-app communication features. That means chat-related information is within the scope of Grab’s stated data collection, regardless of whether a conversation is with customer support, a driver, a delivery partner, a merchant or another user.

Grab gives a specific example for its in-app chat service: it may share your Grab-registered name and profile photo with the other parties to your chat. This is a direct, user-facing disclosure inside Grab’s service, not evidence of an external transfer to an AI company.

What “AI services” means in the notice
The notice says: “In providing you with these services and features, we may use manual or automated means, including AI services.” It also describes uses such as service delivery, user support, fraud prevention, research, testing, machine learning and product development. The wording permits AI-assisted processing in general, but it does not identify a provider, model, country, product backend or vendor contract.
Consequently, the most accurate answer is limited: Grab’s policy allows the use of AI services and covers chat data, but the public notice does not confirm that OpenAI receives those chats. A claim that “Grab sends every chat to OpenAI” goes beyond what the notice says.
Who may see a Grab chat?
Depending on the feature and the action you take, Grab says personal data may be disclosed to drivers and delivery partners, merchants, emergency contacts, Family Profile administrators, employers or community administrators, affiliates, payment and risk providers, cloud-storage providers, analytics providers, research partners, insurance or finance partners and other service providers. The notice also describes sharing that occurs when you authorize another person’s third-party payment method to connect to a Grab payment service.
Those categories do not mean every party receives every conversation. They describe the types of recipients Grab may use for stated purposes. The notice does not provide a public mapping that says which chat fields go to which provider, or whether any particular AI vendor processes a specific conversation.
Does Grab send your location to ChatGPT or OpenAI?
Grab’s location collection
Grab says it may collect precise location when you grant permission. The stated reasons include map and live-location features, navigation, safety and service delivery. Location can also be relevant to fraud prevention, support and the operation of a ride or delivery.

Permission matters: the notice’s description of precise location is tied to authorization for the relevant feature. It does not say that precise location is collected in every circumstance or that all location information is precise. A service can also infer approximate location from a pickup point, destination, device information or a transaction even when a precise-location permission is not active; the notice’s specific statement about precise location concerns permission-based collection.
OpenAI’s location guidance
OpenAI’s location guidance says users can manage location permission in ChatGPT settings. It also says: “ChatGPT does not separately save or store your precise location outside of what information is included in your ChatGPT conversation and context.” OpenAI further explains that location may be shared with trusted third parties to provide local information.
That guidance describes what happens when you use ChatGPT and provide location through that service. It does not say that Grab sends ride coordinates, pickup points or live-location data to ChatGPT. Without a Grab product notice, vendor disclosure or other documentation naming OpenAI, the existence of OpenAI’s location feature is not proof of an integration with Grab.
International processing
Grab says personal data may be transferred internationally for centralized processing, storage, support and service delivery, subject to applicable safeguards. An international transfer clause means data can cross borders; it does not identify OpenAI as the destination. The applicable notice can also vary by the country or account region in which you use Grab.
Can OpenAI see your Grab rides, messages or payment details?
Public policy language currently supports only a conditional answer. If Grab were to send information to an OpenAI service, OpenAI’s own policies would describe how OpenAI handles the information after receipt. Those policies do not establish that Grab actually makes that transfer.

Ride and message information
Grab’s transaction and interaction records can relate to a ride, delivery, support request or in-app conversation. Grab says it uses information for service delivery, navigation, safety, fraud prevention, support, research, testing, machine learning and product development. None of those purposes, as stated, identifies OpenAI or ChatGPT by name.

Payment information
Grab lists payment method, settlement records and items purchased or paid through Grab as passively collected transaction information. It may share relevant personal data with payment processors, credit and risk providers, finance or insurance partners and other service providers. It also says that, when you authorize and enable a connection involving another individual’s third-party payment method, it may share your personal data with that individual for the purpose of enabling payment on Grab.
OpenAI’s general policy discusses payment information and transaction history in the context of OpenAI services. That is a description of OpenAI’s own data environment. It is not a list of Grab vendors and does not show that OpenAI can see your Grab card token, settlement record, fare or purchase history.
Is Grab using OpenAI for its AI chatbot?
No public policy identified here answers that product-specific question. Grab’s wording is provider-neutral: it says “AI services” rather than naming OpenAI, ChatGPT or a particular model. The notice also does not identify a Grab product whose backend is OpenAI, disclose a vendor contract or state that conversations are sent to an external large-language-model provider.

- Grab could use internally developed automation or machine-learning systems.
- Grab could use one or more unnamed third-party AI providers.
- A particular Grab feature could have a separate product-specific notice that identifies a provider not named in the general Privacy Notice.
Only the third-party disclosure itself, a newer product notice, or an official statement naming OpenAI would confirm a Grab–OpenAI connection. Until then, “Grab uses AI” is established, while “Grab uses OpenAI” remains unconfirmed by the cited public policies.

Grab’s notice describes a broad recipient framework. The category that applies depends on the feature, your permissions and the transaction or communication involved.
- People and organizations involved in a service: drivers, delivery partners and merchants.
- Safety and account contacts: emergency contacts, Family Profile administrators, employers and community administrators.
- Grab corporate entities: affiliates that support operations and service delivery.
- Financial and risk providers: payment processors, credit providers, risk providers, insurance partners and finance partners.
- Technology and operations providers: cloud-storage providers, analytics providers and other service providers.
- Knowledge and development partners: research partners and parties supporting testing, machine learning and product development.
- Cross-border infrastructure: recipients involved in centralized processing, storage, support and service delivery in other countries, subject to applicable safeguards.
This list explains why a privacy notice can authorize sharing without naming one specific software company. “Service provider” is a category, not proof that a particular vendor is involved.
How OpenAI says it handles data in its own services
Content, location and payment information
OpenAI’s general policy says it may collect content, geolocation, transaction history and payment information supplied through OpenAI services. It says data may be used to provide and improve those services and may be disclosed to vendors, service providers, affiliates, authorities and other parties with whom a user interacts.

Temporary chats
OpenAI’s Help Center says: “Temporary chats stay out of your chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary.” The same guidance says temporary chats may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. These controls apply to temporary chats in OpenAI’s service; they do not change what Grab retains or how Grab shares data inside its own platform.
Location controls
OpenAI says location permission can be managed in ChatGPT settings. Its guidance distinguishes precise location from information included in a conversation and context, and says trusted third parties may receive location for local results. Again, that is a ChatGPT control and disclosure statement, not evidence that Grab has transmitted your location.
How to interpret claims about a Grab–OpenAI connection
Use the following checks when you encounter a post, screenshot or privacy claim:

- Look for a named recipient. A current Grab notice that explicitly names OpenAI would be stronger evidence than a generic reference to AI services.
- Separate data types. A notice may cover chats, precise location and payment records separately. Confirmation for one category would not automatically prove transfer of the others.
- Check the date and region. Grab’s cited notice is effective 8 October 2025, and privacy terms can differ by jurisdiction, account type or product.
- Find the product-specific disclosure. A chatbot, support assistant or driver-safety feature may have additional terms that are more specific than the general notice.
- Distinguish collection from disclosure. Grab collecting data for machine learning does not identify who, if anyone outside Grab, processes it.
- Do not treat OpenAI’s policy as a vendor list for Grab. OpenAI’s policy describes data OpenAI handles through its services, not all companies that might use AI elsewhere.
Practical privacy choices
You can reduce unnecessary exposure without assuming that OpenAI is involved. Grant precise-location permission only when a Grab feature needs map or live-location functionality, and review which communication and payment features you actively use. Remember that turning off precise location does not erase transaction records or messages already held for service, safety, support or legal purposes.
For ChatGPT itself, review location permission in the app’s settings and use Temporary Chat when you want conversations kept out of chat history, excluded from memory updates and not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary. Temporary chats may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety, so “temporary” is not the same as immediate deletion.
If you need a definitive answer about a specific Grab assistant or feature, ask Grab for the product’s current privacy notice and the categories of vendors processing that feature’s inputs. Policies can change, and a future notice could name a provider that the 8 October 2025 general notice does not name.
What remains unresolved
The public material addressed here does not identify a specific OpenAI integration, vendor contract or Grab product whose backend is OpenAI. It therefore cannot establish that OpenAI sees Grab chats, location, ride information or payment details. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Grab collects and may broadly disclose those classes of data, and it may use unnamed AI services; OpenAI explains its own handling of data it receives; a direct Grab-to-OpenAI transfer is not confirmed.
