No. Preventing Ghostscript from interpreting embedded PostScript can remove one attack surface, but it does not make an untrusted PDF safe by itself. Protection still depends on a supported, patched Ghostscript build, SAFER staying enabled, and operating-system isolation that limits what a compromised conversion process can access.
What the answer means in practice
Ghostscript processes PDF files through a large parser and a set of output devices. A PDF can contain an embedded PostScript stream, represented by the PDF /PS feature and invoked through the DoPS operator. Ghostscript’s -dDOPS switch enables processing of those streams. To disable that capability, do not pass -dDOPS, or turn off the equivalent option in the application that launches Ghostscript.

That change is useful as attack-surface reduction. It does not disable every part of PDF parsing, rendering, font handling, image decoding, device code, or other code paths that could contain a vulnerability. It also does not repair a vulnerable Ghostscript executable. A malicious document can still target a flaw elsewhere in the parser or rendering stack.

The switch is easy to misunderstand because its name looks like a disabling option. In Ghostscript, -dDOPS enables embedded PDF PostScript processing. It has no effect on a standalone PostScript input file. If your service accepts both PDFs and PostScript files, removing -dDOPS protects only the embedded-PostScript path in PDFs; it does not turn standalone PostScript into a safe format.

What -dDOPS changes
Embedded PostScript in PDFs
When -dDOPS is enabled, Ghostscript can execute the PostScript contained in a PDF’s /PS streams and process the DoPS operator. Omitting the switch prevents that particular content from being processed. A document that legitimately relies on embedded PostScript may render differently or fail, so test representative files before changing a production workflow.
Why the documentation warns against enabling it
Ghostscript documentation says use of this option is not recommended in security-conscious applications because it increases the scope for malicious code. That warning is about enabling -dDOPS. Treat the option as an exception for compatibility, not as a normal setting for internet-sourced documents.
What it does not cover
- It does not protect against vulnerabilities in PDF parsing or rendering code unrelated to embedded PostScript.
- It does not update Ghostscript or repair a known vulnerability.
- It does not impose operating-system permissions, process isolation, or resource limits.
- It does not change the behavior of standalone PostScript files.
SAFER is the main file-access boundary
Default behavior since Ghostscript 9.50
Ghostscript has enabled SAFER by default since version 9.50. The mechanism restricts file reads, writes, deletes and renames, device selection, and some device parameters. Those restrictions are the principal control limiting what PostScript can do to the host while a document is being converted.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not assume the default is active without checking the actual binary and launch command. Wrappers, legacy scripts, and application settings can add options that change the security mode. Log the complete Ghostscript command line used by the service, and verify that the expected security settings are applied on every code path.

Why -dNOSAFER is dangerous
-dNOSAFER is equivalent to delayed SAFER activation. In that mode, PostScript can read, write, rename, or delete any files that the operating system permissions allow. Passing it for an unknown PDF materially expands the consequences of malicious content. The same warning applies to -dDELAYSAFER.
Never add either option merely to make a troublesome document convert. If a file requires relaxed behavior, route it through a separate, isolated workflow with a disposable environment and no access to sensitive data.
Why old PostScript tricks are not a substitute for a current build
Modern SAFER enforcement is implemented in Ghostscript’s C code. After activation, the old PostScript save/restore technique does not undo those restrictions. That is a useful property, but it is not a promise that every implementation bug has been eliminated. Security fixes are still required whenever a flaw is found in the enforcement code or in another privileged component.

| Issue | Affected context | Security consequence |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2019-14817 | Pre-9.50 Ghostscript | Crafted PostScript could bypass -dSAFER, reach the filesystem, or execute arbitrary commands. The NIST National Vulnerability Database assigns a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.8 (High). |
| CVE-2019-10216 | Pre-9.50 Ghostscript | A privileged-call flaw enabled access outside restricted areas. |
| CVE-2021-3781 | Ghostscript 9.50, 9.52, 9.53.3, and 9.54.0 on Unix-like systems | File-access protection was insufficient for the %pipe% PostScript device. A code fix was planned for 9.55.0. |
These cases matter because a correctly chosen switch could not compensate for a defect in the implementation. A current package containing the relevant fixes is more important than relying on any single command-line option.
Use a layered conversion design
For internet-sourced or user-uploaded PDFs, combine configuration, patching, and containment. The following sequence gives each layer a distinct job.
- Choose a supported release. Install a Ghostscript version that is still maintained by the project or by your operating-system vendor. Review the vendor’s security advisories and the distributor’s backport notices; a distribution may include a fix without changing the upstream version string.
- Confirm the security mode. Keep
SAFERenabled. Remove-dNOSAFERand-dDELAYSAFERfrom every wrapper, service unit, and conversion command that handles untrusted files. - Leave embedded PostScript disabled unless required. Do not pass
-dDOPSfor ordinary untrusted PDFs. If a compatibility test proves that a trusted document needs it, use a separate processing lane rather than weakening the default path. - Run with least privilege. Use a dedicated account that cannot read application secrets, user home directories, database credentials, private keys, or unrelated uploads. Give it only the directories required for input, temporary files, and output.
- Add containment. Process untrusted files in a container, virtual machine, or isolated conversion service. Restrict network access where possible, and apply operating-system controls that limit child processes, filesystem visibility, and device access.
- Enforce resource limits. Put ceilings on CPU time, memory, temporary-storage use, and job duration in the supervisor around Ghostscript. These controls address denial-of-service risks that a PostScript switch does not address.
- Quarantine failures. If parsing fails, a security alert fires, or a file needs an exception such as embedded PostScript, stop the normal pipeline. Keep the original in quarantine and send it to a separately isolated review or rendering path.
How the controls compare
| Control | Primary protection | Compatibility impact | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
Omit -dDOPS |
Stops processing of embedded PDF /PS streams and the DoPS operator. |
PDFs that legitimately depend on embedded PostScript may render differently or fail. | Does not cover other PDF bugs, standalone PostScript, or vulnerable Ghostscript code. |
SAFER (default from 9.50) |
Restricts file access, deletion and renaming, device selection, and some device parameters. | Some documents or workflows that expect broad filesystem access may need redesign. | Historical flaws have bypassed or weakened protection; updates remain necessary. |
| Supported, patched release | Removes known implementation vulnerabilities through vendor fixes. | Updates can change behavior and should be tested before rollout. | Cannot prevent a future vulnerability by itself. |
| Dedicated account and filesystem permissions | Limits the data and files exposed if conversion is compromised. | Requires explicit input, temporary, and output directory design. | Does not stop exploitation inside the permitted account. |
| Container, VM, or isolated service | Adds a containment boundary around the converter. | Introduces deployment and monitoring overhead. | Isolation quality depends on correct configuration and host security. |
Checking a real deployment
Inspect the invocation, not just application settings
Find the process, script, or library call that actually starts Ghostscript. Search for -dDOPS, -dNOSAFER, and -dDELAYSAFER. An application may expose a friendly “compatibility” setting that silently adds one of these switches. Record the effective command line in a protected audit log, while avoiding disclosure of filenames that contain personal information.

Verify the executable and package provenance
Check the Ghostscript version reported by the exact binary used in production, not just the version installed on an administrator’s workstation. Then compare that version with the Ghostscript project’s release information and your operating-system distributor’s security notices. The project release page lists Ghostscript 10.07.1 as the latest release dated May 19, 2026; that date is a point-in-time reference, not a guarantee that it remains current for your platform.

Test both ordinary and adversarial inputs
Use a corpus that includes PDFs with and without embedded PostScript, malformed files, unusually large pages, and files that previously triggered parser errors. Confirm that the normal path rejects or quarantines unsupported content instead of automatically retrying with -dDOPS or -dNOSAFER. Test the same policy in every worker, queue, and fallback renderer.
Common failure modes and safe responses
A document stops rendering after you remove -dDOPS
The file may rely on an embedded /PS stream. First determine whether the document is trusted and whether the feature is genuinely required. Do not restore the option globally. Instead, place that file or a controlled class of trusted files in an isolated conversion lane with a current Ghostscript build, a disposable account, and no access to sensitive data.
A vendor says to add -dNOSAFER
Treat that instruction as a security exception, not a routine fix. Ask which operation requires unrestricted access, whether the document can be preprocessed safely, and whether the vendor supports a sandboxed service. Never apply the option to files uploaded by unknown users.
The installed version looks old, but the operating system says it is patched
Distributors often backport security fixes while retaining an older upstream version number. Read the distributor’s advisory and package changelog, and verify that the specific CVE fixes are included. If the status is unclear, use a supported package from a trusted maintenance channel rather than assuming the version string proves either safety or insecurity.

A security alert mentions %pipe%
Stop processing untrusted files on that worker and verify the Ghostscript update level. CVE-2021-3781 showed that file-access protection for the %pipe% device was insufficient in several releases. A configuration change cannot substitute for the code fix; upgrade or apply the distributor’s documented backport before resuming service.
The converter is isolated but still has too much access
Review mounts, temporary directories, service credentials, network routes, and inherited environment variables. Isolation is only as strong as the permissions granted to the process. Remove secrets and unrelated files from the worker rather than relying on Ghostscript to hide them.
Choosing a policy for your workload
Public upload or email attachment service
Use a current supported build, keep SAFER enabled, omit -dDOPS, and place conversion in a disposable container or service account with strict filesystem and network controls. Quarantine files that fail parsing or require an exception.
Internal documents from a controlled source
You may accept a compatibility exception after testing, but keep patching, SAFER, least privilege, and process isolation. “Internal” does not mean harmless: documents can be forwarded, mislabeled, or compromised before upload.
Legacy workflow that requires broad filesystem access
Do not solve the incompatibility by adding -dNOSAFER to the general converter. Separate the legacy job, restrict its input and output directories, run it in an isolated environment, and plan a migration to a workflow that works with SAFER enabled.
Bottom line
Disabling embedded PDF PostScript is a sensible hardening step when compatibility allows, but it is not a sandbox and it does not prevent all PDF exploits. The safer order of priorities is: run a patched, supported Ghostscript release; keep SAFER active; never use -dNOSAFER or -dDELAYSAFER for unknown documents; then add least-privilege permissions and OS-level isolation. Treat -dDOPS as a narrowly scoped compatibility choice, not as your primary malware defense.
