Usually, no. DirectStorage and faster drives target game-data reads, while shader-compilation stutter occurs when a game or graphics driver compiles shaders on the PC. An SSD can help if storage is the bottleneck for loading or asset streaming, but the available Microsoft documentation does not establish it as a general fix for shader-compilation stutter.
Why shader compilation can cause stutter
Games need compiled shaders to render effects and materials. When compilation happens on the player’s device at launch or just in time during gameplay, that work can lengthen loading or interrupt play. Microsoft describes those outcomes, including in-game shader-compilation stutter, in its Advanced Shader Delivery overview.

A hitch that coincides with shader compilation is therefore not automatically evidence of a slow drive. The work causing it is shader compilation; storage speed matters only if storage I/O is also limiting the game.

| Technology | Work it targets | When it may help | What support it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| DirectStorage | Efficient reads of game data from high-speed storage, with reduced CPU overhead. | Storage-bound loading or asset streaming; it is not documented as a shader compiler or a fix for shader-compilation stutter. | The game must use the technology. It is not a global Windows switch that a player can turn on for every title. |
| Faster SSD | Storage reads and writes. | When drive I/O limits loading or streaming. The cited documentation does not show that upgrading a drive prevents shader compilation or removes stutter caused by it. | A game and workload that are actually limited by storage. |
| Driver shader cache | Keeping compiled shaders on disk so later application runs can reuse them. | Potentially on later runs, where the graphics driver supports the relevant cache behavior. | Driver support; behavior is not guaranteed to be identical across games, APIs, or drivers. |
| Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) | Preparing and delivering precompiled shaders rather than compiling them on the player’s device. | Where the game and platform support it, reducing the need for local shader compilation. | A supported Windows version, ASD-capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration. |
Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a way for games to use high-speed storage, such as NVMe SSDs, for small data reads with minimal CPU overhead; see its DirectStorage documentation. That purpose is distinct from compiling shaders.

- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
When an SSD upgrade is relevant
An SSD upgrade may make a difference if a game is waiting on storage to load assets or levels. That is a different symptom from a hitch tied to shader compilation. The reviewed sources provide no controlled comparison showing how much, if at all, a drive upgrade reduces shader-compilation stutter, so there is no supported percentage or frame-time improvement to expect.
- If loading or asset streaming is the problem, faster storage may be relevant.
- If a hitch occurs as shaders are compiled, drive speed alone is not an established remedy.
- Do not buy an NVMe drive solely on the promise that it will cure shader-compilation stutter.
What targets shader work more directly
Precompiled shader delivery
ASD is designed to move shader compilation away from the player’s device by preparing and delivering compiled shaders. It is not a setting that users can enable for any game: the title, Windows version, GPU and driver, and storefront all need to support the feature. Microsoft lists those requirements in its ASD GDK documentation.

Driver-supported shader caching
A shader disk cache can help future runs reuse compiled work, when the graphics driver supports it. Microsoft’s D3D11 shader-cache reference describes OS-managed caching as conditional on driver support. It does not guarantee the same caching behavior for every game, graphics API, or driver, and a cache is not the same thing as eliminating compilation in all situations.
