Microsoft’s current instructions say you need to sign in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account to get started with Copilot for personal use. That confirms the documented setup requirement, but it does not establish when a newly reported sign-in prompt began or prove Microsoft recently imposed a universal change on every Edge user.
Does Copilot in Edge require you to sign in?
For personal use, Microsoft Support’s Getting started with Copilot in Microsoft Edge page answers this directly: “Yes. Sign in to Edge with your personal Microsoft account to get started.” The page describes Copilot as an assistant for questions, research, and summaries of webpages, videos, and PDFs.

For work accounts, Microsoft also says that in most cases Copilot signs in automatically with the Entra account after you sign in to Edge with a work profile. Can you stop Copilot from using webpage context?
Microsoft documents a setting that controls whether Copilot can use context from the web in its responses. In Edge, open the toolbar’s More menu, choose Copilot and AI, then turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web. Microsoft says this prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, page title, open tabs, or browser history in responses. This is a context-use control; Microsoft’s instructions do not describe it as a way to bypass the sign-in requirement.

The available official information does not establish a universal rollout date or confirm that Microsoft recently changed access for all Edge users. Microsoft’s May 13, 2026 Edge update announcement discusses features and settings, but does not announce a sign-in rule change.

A Reddit user reported on August 9, 2026 that the Edge Copilot sidebar requested sign-in, describing it as “Edge Copilot sidebar now forces sign-in.” That is an individual report, not evidence of a service-wide policy or a workaround that applies to everyone. The available information does not establish which accounts, regions, platforms, Edge builds, or rollout groups may see the prompt.
