If your Mac and iPad support Universal Control, you may not need to pair the keyboard to the iPad or buy another one.
Choose the kind of switching you need
Universal Control is for moving the pointer and keyboard input across nearby Mac and iPad screens. Each device keeps its own apps and display. A multi-device keyboard instead changes which previously paired Bluetooth host receives keystrokes, usually with a dedicated button.

| Option | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Control | Lets a Mac’s keyboard and pointer move across supported nearby Macs and iPads; Apple says it can control the Mac and up to two additional devices. | A supported Mac-and-iPad or Mac-and-Mac setup where you want to work across screens. |
| Multi-device Bluetooth keyboard | Switches the keyboard’s active connection among previously paired devices using model-specific controls. | Devices that do not support Universal Control, or a workflow where you want a physical host-selection button. |
These options work differently: Universal Control is a cross-device session, not a keyboard paired separately with every device. Features and setup steps for Bluetooth host switching depend on the keyboard model.

Check the requirements
Apple’s Universal Control setup requires compatible devices and operating systems, the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled, and devices within 10 metres of one another. Devices need to be awake and unlocked to connect. Apple also notes that internet-sharing conditions can prevent Universal Control. Check Apple’s current Universal Control requirements and setup instructions for compatibility details and the applicable OS versions.

Turn on Universal Control
- On your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays > Advanced.
- Enable Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad.
- On iPad, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff, depending on the OS version) and enable Cursor and Keyboard if the setting is available.
Apple can change interface labels between OS versions, so use the current instructions linked above if a setting is named differently or missing.
Connect and move between screens
- Place the devices near each other, with both awake and unlocked.
- Move your Mac pointer past the left or right edge of the Mac display in the direction of the other device. When the connection indicator appears, continue moving the pointer to connect.
- Alternatively, select the nearby device from the Mac’s Control Center Display controls or from System Settings > Displays, then move the pointer across.
- If the pointer appears to exit on the wrong side, arrange the screens in System Settings > Displays so their positions match your desk.
How to type on the other device
Once Universal Control is connected, move the pointer onto the target Mac or iPad and type. The keyboard follows the pointer, while each device continues to show and run its own apps. Apple also documents moving the pointer among devices and dragging supported content between them.

Can I use my Mac keyboard on my iPad without pairing it again?
With Universal Control, a supported Mac keyboard can control an iPad through the cross-device session; you do not set up a separate Bluetooth keyboard pairing for that workflow. This requires the devices and settings listed above. It is different from connecting a keyboard directly to the iPad over Bluetooth.

Does Magic Keyboard switch between devices?
Apple’s Magic Keyboard setup instructions describe turning on the keyboard and pairing it with a Mac over Bluetooth; connecting it by cable can pair it with the Mac. Apple’s iPhone pairing instructions say to unpair Magic Keyboard from another device before connecting it to iPhone. Those instructions do not document a dedicated Magic Keyboard button for instantly switching among saved Bluetooth hosts. See Apple’s guides for connecting a wireless keyboard to Mac and connecting Magic Keyboard to iPhone.
How do I switch a multi-device Bluetooth keyboard between computers?
The process depends on the keyboard. For example, Logitech’s Keys-To-Go 2 guide describes pairing through its Easy-Switch channels: hold the button for the desired channel for three seconds to enter pairing, then select the keyboard in the device’s Bluetooth settings. After pairing, a short press on that channel’s button switches to the previously connected device. This is one model’s documented method, not a universal keyboard standard.

Which option should you use?
- Choose Universal Control if your devices are compatible Macs or iPads and you want the keyboard and pointer to move between their screens without separately changing Bluetooth hosts.
- Choose a multi-device keyboard if your devices do not support Universal Control, or you specifically want physical buttons to select the active Bluetooth host.
- Check the exact keyboard model before relying on host switching. Confirm how many devices it supports and how its pairing and switching controls work; those details vary by model.
- Consider setup dependencies. Universal Control needs compatible Apple devices, a shared Apple Account, nearby devices, and the required wireless and Handoff settings. Direct Bluetooth switching instead depends on the keyboard’s supported host slots and pairing procedure.
Sidecar is a different feature: it makes an iPad an extended or mirrored display for a Mac. Universal Control lets each device show its own apps while sharing the Mac’s pointer and keyboard across screens. Apple explains the distinction in its Continuity and related features guide.
