It can, however, prevent an ad from being shown, which may affect an app feature that specifically requires watching an ad to earn a reward or unlock something. The exact result depends on the app’s design and the blocker; there is no universal outcome.
What blocking an ad does—and does not—mean
Three things are easy to conflate: whether an ad is displayed, whether you have paid for an app entitlement, and whether you have an active subscription. They are separate questions. An ad blocker can interfere with ad delivery. That alone does not establish that you have bought the app’s ad-free option, acquired a paid feature, or changed your subscription status.

App businesses can combine several ways of making money. Apple describes free apps supported by display advertising, freemium apps that offer optional purchases or subscriptions, paid apps, and apps that charge upfront while also offering paid features. Google Play likewise identifies paid distribution, in-app products, subscriptions, and advertising as distinct models. These options may coexist in one app; the presence of ads does not tell you what a particular purchase includes. Can blocking ads disable app features?
Not as a general rule. Some apps show ads without making ordinary app functions conditional on them. Others may offer a specific reward or unlock in exchange for watching an ad. Blocking the first kind of ad may simply mean that you do not see it; blocking the second may prevent the app from completing the ad-view step associated with that reward. The platform guidance available here does not settle how any individual app handles that situation.

That distinction matters when a feature appears unavailable. An app may have a free feature, a paid feature, and an ad-view reward that look similar on screen but have different conditions. Do not infer from the presence of a blocked ad that the app has taken away a purchase. Likewise, do not assume that a reward requiring an ad will still be granted when no ad is shown.
How to identify what a feature requires
- Read the prompt next to the feature. Look for wording that says the action requires watching an ad, paying once, or subscribing. If the condition is not clear, do not treat the ad itself as proof of what the feature costs or includes.
- Check the app’s purchase description. Review the in-app purchase or subscription screen for the listed benefits. Apple’s guidance says subscription offers should clearly describe duration, price, and the content or services included. - Separate a reward from an entitlement. A reward promised for an ad view is not necessarily the same thing as a feature included with a purchase. Apple lists “Remove ads” as an example of a non-consumable in-app purchase—a purchase that provides an app entitlement—rather than treating ad blocking as a purchase. Apple Support’s guide to in-app purchases and subscriptions gives that example.
- Ask the app’s support team about unclear behavior. Include the app name, device platform, the feature or reward, and what happened when the ad did not appear. The app’s own explanation is needed to resolve a product-specific question.
Does blocking ads affect an existing subscription?
There is no basis to assume that blocking an ad automatically cancels a subscription. A subscription is an ongoing offer for access to the content, services, or premium features described by the app; the app’s terms determine whether ad-free viewing is among those benefits. Some subscriptions may include an ad-free experience, but that should be stated in the offer rather than inferred from the fact that ads are absent.

Keep two checks separate if something changes: first, whether the subscription remains active according to the account or store through which it was purchased; second, what the app says the subscription includes. An ad not appearing does not answer either question. If a premium feature is missing, check the app’s stated subscription benefits and contact the app’s support team. If you are unsure whether you have a subscription, consult the account or purchase record associated with the transaction.

Apple distinguishes ad removal sold as a non-consumable purchase from subscriptions, and describes subscriptions as ongoing access. The labels and terms in the app’s actual offer are the relevant guide.

Can blocking ads reduce developer support or updates?
Blocking an ad can prevent that ad from being presented, removing the opportunity for the developer to earn revenue from that impression. Apple describes display advertising as a way developers earn revenue when ads are presented. The reviewed platform guidance does not quantify the revenue effect for an individual app, and it does not establish that blocking ads causes a particular developer to reduce customer support, stop updates, or provide worse service. Apple’s business-model guidance explains the ad-supported model alongside paid apps, purchases, and subscriptions.
It is therefore reasonable to distinguish a possible lost ad impression from a claim about what a developer will do next. App revenue may come from more than one model: Apple describes freemium apps as earning through in-app purchases and subscriptions as well as other models, while Google Play also recognizes advertising and paid functionality. Those sources do not predict how a specific developer will respond to ad blocking.

Apple also recommends thoughtful customer support as a way to help manage subscriber relationships and potentially improve engagement, retention, and ratings. That is guidance about supporting subscribers; it is not evidence that ad blocking has a measurable effect on support quality. If you want to support a specific developer, use an official option the app actually offers—such as its disclosed ad-free purchase, subscription, or other support route. Do not assume every app has one, or that a particular option includes benefits not listed in its terms. Apple’s subscription guidance discusses subscriber support.

How to decide what to do in a specific app
When the answer matters—because a reward is missing, a feature is unavailable, or you want to support the developer—use the app’s own offer details rather than relying on a general rule about blockers.
- Identify the app and the exact action. Note whether the issue is a display ad, a reward for watching an ad, a purchased feature, or a subscription benefit. These are not interchangeable.
- Read the offer before changing anything. Check whether the app says “remove ads,” describes a one-time purchase, or presents a subscription with ongoing benefits. For a subscription, look for the duration, price, and included content or services described in the offer.
- Check whether the feature is conditional. If the app says a reward is granted for watching an ad, treat that as an app-specific dependency. If the ad is blocked and the reward does not appear, the available official platform guidance cannot determine whether the app offers another route.
- Contact the developer with a precise question. Ask whether the feature requires a successfully delivered ad, whether an alternative exists, or whether the benefit is included in your purchase or subscription. Share the platform and relevant offer wording so support can address the actual case.
- Choose an official support route if you want to contribute. A developer may offer ad removal, a subscription, paid functionality, or no such option. Consider only the terms and benefits actually shown by the app.
What the available platform guidance can and cannot tell you
Apple and Google’s materials explain common monetization structures, and Apple identifies “Remove ads” as an example of a paid in-app entitlement. Apple also describes subscriptions as ongoing access and discusses the information developers should provide about subscription offers. Together, these sources help separate ads, purchases, and subscriptions.
They do not provide a universal technical rule for how every ad blocker interacts with every app, whether a specific ad-view reward will be granted when an ad is blocked, or whether ad blocking changes a particular developer’s support or update plans. For those questions, the app’s own terms and support guidance are decisive. The safest conclusion is limited but practical: blocking ads may affect ad delivery and an ad-dependent reward, but it does not itself prove that a purchase or subscription has been canceled, and it cannot establish a developer’s future support decisions.
