They address both jobs, but not necessarily through one product or one plan. Choose based on the editing you need, how you route and track signatures, and whether the workflow fits your existing devices and services.
What to compare before switching from DocuSign
“Edit and sign a PDF” can describe two distinct jobs. PDF editing changes content already in the file, such as text or images. Signature workflows prepare a document for one or more people to sign, deliver it, track progress, and retain the completed record. A product may handle one job well without including the other in the plan you are considering.

Before choosing an alternative, define the actual task. If you only need to add your own signature or mark up a document, you may not need a full request-and-tracking workflow. If you send agreements to clients or coworkers, confirm the service supports the preparation and delivery steps you use—not just signing a document you received.
- Editing: Can you change existing PDF text or images, or does the product mainly add annotations, form fields, and signature marks?
- Preparation and routing: Can you place fields where signers need them and specify the order in which people sign, if your process requires an order?
- Follow-up and status: Can you see whether a request is pending or complete, and does the workflow support the reminders your team needs?
- Completion evidence: Check what records or audit information are available after signing and how you retain them.
- Fit and cost: Verify integrations, supported devices, plan limits, seat counts, sending limits, and contract terms against your use case.
Do not assume that a family of products is a single all-inclusive subscription. For example, an editor and a separately marketed e-signature service may be complementary offerings with different entitlements. Confirm the exact plan, license, and region available to your account before moving a real workflow.

Foxit PDF Editor and Foxit eSign: two offerings to evaluate together
Foxit’s PDF Editor product page describes tools for creating, editing, annotating, signing, and sharing PDFs. The page also advertises both a perpetual-license option for Windows and macOS and subscription products. Those licensing choices do not by themselves establish which signature-request capabilities are included, so treat the editor and the sending workflow as separate questions.
Foxit eSign is presented as a service for preparing PDFs, guiding signers, collecting signatures, tracking progress, and managing completed agreements. Its pricing page says fields can be placed directly on PDF documents. These claims make the pair worth investigating when your workflow needs both changes to a PDF and a managed request for other people to sign it.

- List the changes you make to source files. If you routinely revise existing text or images, assess PDF Editor against an actual representative file. Annotation or a text box placed over the page is not necessarily the same as changing the underlying PDF content.
- Map the signature request. Write down who signs, whether anyone must sign first, which fields each person completes, and what status information you need. Compare that list with the eSign workflow rather than assuming every step is available on every plan.
- Confirm the license boundary. Check whether the editor license or subscription and eSign access are separate for your intended use. The product pages describe distinct offerings; the exact entitlements and current commercial terms must be verified with Foxit.
- Check the working environment. Foxit advertises a perpetual-license option for Windows and macOS, but that does not establish every platform or device capability for eSign. Confirm the exact desktop, browser, and mobile access your team needs.
- Run a complete sample workflow. Use a non-sensitive test PDF to verify edits, field placement, signer instructions, request status, and access to the completed agreement before migrating important documents.
The main trade-off to examine is whether separating a full PDF editor from a signature-request service is acceptable for your users and budget. The available product information does not support a claim that a particular Foxit plan includes every capability in both offerings.

Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Sign: PDF tools plus cloud signature requests
Adobe describes Acrobat Pro as providing tools to edit and sign PDFs. It also documents sending signature requests through Acrobat or Reader using Acrobat Sign cloud services. Recipients can sign through a browser or mobile device and do not need to purchase an Adobe product to sign, according to Adobe’s help documentation.
This distinction matters if you are choosing a service for a team that prepares and sends documents: the sender’s authoring and administration capabilities are not the same as the recipient’s ability to sign. Adobe’s product-family description is a starting point, not proof that every sending, tracking, or administrative feature is included in every Acrobat or Sign plan.
What to verify in an Adobe workflow
- Which plan supplies the editing tools your staff needs and which plan or service supplies signature requests.
- Whether the request process supports your required number and order of signers, field types, reminders, and tracking.
- What completion records and audit information are available to the sender and how you export or retain them.
- Whether the account and device setup works for the people preparing documents, even though recipients can sign in a browser or on mobile without buying Adobe software.
For a simple evaluation, prepare a representative PDF, send a test request to an internal signer, and inspect both the signer experience and the sender’s final records. Confirm the plan’s current capabilities before treating the test as evidence that all users or account types have the same access.
Dropbox PDF editor and signature workflow: a fit for Dropbox-centered work
Dropbox describes a workflow that can add, delete, and edit PDF text, add form fields, and send a signature request without leaving Dropbox. That integrated path may reduce app switching for people who already keep and work with files there.

- Recommended uses for product: Business
- Style: Modern
- Hand orientation: Ambidextrous
- Compatible devices: PC
Before adopting it, verify availability for your plan, geography, and account type. Also check whether the workflow covers your real signature requirements: signer order, reminders, progress visibility, completed records, and any integrations with storage, customer-management, or office tools. The product description establishes a convenient sequence of editing, adding fields, and requesting a signature; it does not establish every operational detail for every Dropbox account.
A practical Dropbox evaluation
- Open a representative PDF in the account that would actually be used and test whether the text changes you need are possible.
- Add the fields needed for a realistic signature request and confirm the document remains legible on the recipient’s device.
- Send a test request and observe how a signer opens and completes it.
- Check what status information appears to the sender and what file or record remains after completion.
- Ask the account administrator to confirm plan eligibility, regional availability, and any sending or user limits that apply.
If any essential requirement is unavailable under your account, compare the cost and effort of a separate PDF editor or e-signature service with the convenience of keeping the workflow in Dropbox.
When PandaDoc may be relevant—and when it may not
PandaDoc is a conditional alternative, not a confirmed choice for direct editing of arbitrary existing PDFs based on the cited material. Its vendor-authored comparison positions it around creating documents and collecting e-signatures. That same comparison distinguishes an editor for uploaded Word documents from PDF-native editing discussed for competitors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat distinction changes the fit. If the source of your document is a proposal or sales document you create and revise, document creation plus e-signature may be the more relevant workflow to assess. If you need to edit existing PDF text or images directly, do not infer that capability from the comparison article. Confirm it in current primary product documentation and test it with a file representative of your work.

How to run a fair comparison
A short checklist prevents a polished demo or a low headline price from obscuring a missing requirement. Compare the same document and process in each candidate, and record what the plan actually supports.
1. Separate content editing from markup
Choose a PDF with the types of changes your team regularly makes: correcting existing text, replacing an image, adding a comment, or inserting a form field. Test each operation separately. Editing existing content, placing an annotation on top of a page, and preparing a fillable form are different tasks. Confirm that the saved file behaves correctly when reopened and shared.
2. Model the signing path
Write down the signer count, order, roles, and fields. Include any approval step or handoff that must occur before the document is complete. Then check how the service handles delivery, signer instructions, status, and follow-up. Do not assume that a basic “send for signature” feature includes every routing option your organization expects.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Inspect the completed record
After a test signature, determine which final document and completion information are available, who can retrieve them, and where your organization will retain them. If you need records for an internal policy, customer dispute, or regulated workflow, verify the relevant details with the provider and your own legal or compliance advisers.

4. Check integrations and access
List the services where source and completed documents must live, and the devices used by both staff and signers. Verify integration availability and supported platforms for the exact plan and account type, not merely the vendor’s product family. An option that saves a handoff in one team may create extra steps for another.
5. Compare total cost and limits
Ask each vendor for the current terms relevant to your use: per-user or seat charges, sending or envelope limits, contract duration, and any separate charge for editing or e-signature access. The cited pages do not provide a matched price comparison, so a precise ranking by price would be misleading. Compare equivalent plans and expected usage rather than comparing an editor-only license with a bundled workflow.
Legal and recordkeeping considerations
An electronic signature’s legal suitability depends on the jurisdiction, transaction, and workflow. Adobe’s U.S. overview describes the ESIGN Act and UETA as part of the U.S. framework, while noting exclusions and requirements and stating that its guide is not legal advice. It is not a basis for assuming that every electronic signature is valid for every document or circumstance.
Before switching a business process, identify the governing jurisdiction and transaction type. Check whether the parties must consent to electronic records, whether identity or authentication steps are required, and what retention and recordkeeping rules apply. Where the transaction is consequential or requirements are unclear, get advice from a qualified legal professional rather than relying on a product label or a vendor overview.
Which alternative should you shortlist?
- Shortlist Foxit PDF Editor with Foxit eSign if you want to assess a dedicated PDF editor alongside a distinct service for preparing, sending, tracking, and managing signed agreements. Confirm the combination of licenses and subscriptions required.
- Shortlist Adobe Acrobat with Acrobat Sign if you want to evaluate Adobe’s PDF editing tools and its documented cloud signature-request workflow, while checking plan-specific sender and administration features.
- Shortlist Dropbox’s PDF workflow if your team already works in Dropbox and the described text editing, form fields, and in-product signature request match your needs and account eligibility.
- Consider PandaDoc conditionally if document creation and sales proposals are the central job. Verify direct editing of existing PDFs in current primary documentation before treating it as a replacement for a PDF editor.
Choose only after a test of both halves of the task: editing a real-world sample PDF and completing a representative signature request. Then verify plan limits, integrations, records, and legal requirements for your workflow. None of the product-family descriptions alone establishes that all capabilities are available in one plan.
