Yes. In a September 5, 2024 interview with The Verge, Bill Gates said he uses ChatGPT to get explanations while learning about topics and to help with writing. He also named meeting summaries and follow-up questions in Microsoft Teams as the AI feature he used most. His comments describe his personal use; they do not show that ChatGPT is consistently accurate or that he relies on it instead of human researchers.

What Gates said he uses ChatGPT for

Asked whether he used ChatGPT in day-to-day life, Gates told The Verge: “You know, I’m often learning about topics, and ChatGPT is an excellent way to get explanations for specific questions. I’m often writing things, and it’s a huge help in writing.” Read the interview transcript.

That is a first-person account of using the chatbot as an explainer and writing aid. It does not establish how often he uses it, whether he treats it as his sole research source, or how he checks its answers.

The feature he said he used most was in Teams

Gates distinguished his ChatGPT use from another AI feature: “I’d say the feature I use the most is the meeting summary, which is integrated into [Microsoft] Teams, which I use a lot. The ability to interact and not just get the summary, but ask questions about the meeting, is pretty fantastic.”

So the interview describes two related but distinct uses: ChatGPT for explanations and writing, and meeting summaries with follow-up questions in Teams. Gates did not say that Teams meeting summaries were his way of doing general research.

Does this show ChatGPT is reliable for research?

No. Gates’s favorable description of ChatGPT as an “excellent” way to get explanations is his opinion, not an accuracy test. The interview supplies no error rate, examples checked against primary sources, or comparison with researchers or search engines. It also does not describe a verification routine.

For readers using AI to investigate a topic, a useful distinction is between getting oriented and establishing what is true. A chatbot can help clarify a question or summarize an idea, but important claims still need to be checked against reliable, traceable sources. The interview does not establish how Gates handles that step.

Where the “private army of researchers” headline comes from

Futurism published a September 7, 2024 article with the phrase “could afford a private army of researchers” in its headline. That is the publication’s framing, not a quote from Gates in The Verge interview. The original interview supports the reported uses above, but it does not compare ChatGPT with hiring researchers or say that the chatbot makes mistakes constantly. Interview context

Justine Calma conducted the Verge interview, published September 5, 2024, ahead of the then-scheduled September 18 launch of the Netflix series What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates. The outlet said the interview had been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Gates also discussed Khanmigo, which The Verge described as Khan Academy’s AI tool based on ChatGPT, as an education example he had seen. That discussion is separate from his account of how he personally uses ChatGPT. When asked about Microsoft and OpenAI, Gates said he was an adviser to Microsoft and commented on the scale of investment in the field; this does not change what the interview establishes about his own use.
