If a command or application variable works in your terminal but fails in cron, the usual cause is that the scheduled job does not get the same environment as your interactive shell. Give the job the executable paths, variables, and shell it needs; then capture its output so you can see what failed. The exact defaults depend on the cron implementation and the type of crontab.
Why cron cannot see a command or variable that works in your terminal
An interactive login shell may load startup files that set PATH, initialize language version managers, define aliases, or export application settings. A cron job runs with an environment supplied by the scheduler and may not load those files. A bare command such as python is found by searching directories in PATH; if its directory is absent, the shell may report “command not found.” A variable that was set only in your terminal session can likewise be empty or unset in the job.

POSIX specifies a baseline environment that includes HOME, LOGNAME, PATH, and SHELL, but implementations can differ. Its crontab description says the command field is executed by sh at the scheduled time. POSIX crontab specification On Cronie, the default shell is /bin/sh; it sets LOGNAME and HOME from the job owner’s account, while HOME and SHELL can be overridden. Cronie crontab manual

Diagnose the job in order
- Identify the scheduler, account, and crontab. Check which cron implementation or scheduler is in use, then inspect the crontab for the account that runs the job. A user’s crontab,
/etc/crontab, and files under/etc/cron.dmay use different formats. System crontabs commonly include a username field; user crontabs do not. Make the change in the table that actually owns the job. - Capture output while troubleshooting. Temporarily append
>> /absolute/path/to/job.log 2>&1to the command so both standard output and errors are recorded. Choose a log path writable by the job’s account, and remember that logs may expose credentials, paths, or other sensitive data. Cronie can mail job output or, depending on daemon configuration, send it to syslog. Cronie crontab manual - Find the executable’s actual path. In the same account’s terminal, run
command -v tool, replacingtoolwith the command that fails. Use the returned absolute path in the cron entry, and verify that the job’s account can execute the file and access its parent directories. A path found in one user’s shell may not exist or be accessible for another user. - Check application configuration separately. List the variables the program requires and determine where each is set. A shell variable reaches child processes only when it is exported; a child inherits a copy of its parent’s environment. Linux process environment documentation
- Check shell syntax and cron parsing. If the command uses Bash-only syntax, it may fail under Cronie’s default
/bin/sh. Also check quotes and special characters, particularly%, which Cronie treats specially in a command field.
Set command paths and variables explicitly
Use an absolute path for a command
For a single executable, the clearest fix is often to replace its bare name with its full path, for example /usr/bin/python3 instead of python3. Confirm the path on the target machine rather than copying an example: installations through nvm, pyenv, or other version managers may live in user-specific directories initialized only by an interactive profile. A stable interpreter path or deliberate initialization script is safer than relying on an alias or shell startup behavior.
Set an intentional PATH for multiple commands
If the job calls several programs by name, add a PATH assignment near the top of the crontab. Cronie’s documented assignment syntax is name = value; spaces around the equals sign are optional. The value must use directories that actually exist and contain the intended programs.

This is an illustrative user-crontab entry, not a universal path list. Adjust the directories and application value for the host and account. Avoid adding user-writable directories to a privileged job’s PATH unless you have reviewed the security implications. In Cronie, the daemon’s -P option changes how PATH is obtained, but it is a daemon-level setting, not a substitute for choosing a suitable environment for each application job. Cronie daemon manual

Set variables in the crontab or a wrapper
For a small number of static values, a standalone assignment above the schedule is concise. Cronie treats an assignment as an active line; a trailing comment on that line becomes part of the value, so put comments on separate lines. For a one-command assignment, use a form such as APP_ENV=production /absolute/path/to/program.

- Build Quality: Solid ABS shell and well made components in one place make it strong and convenient to travel
- Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal
Use a wrapper when setup involves several exports, a working-directory change, or multiple commands. The shebang makes the intended interpreter explicit:
#!/bin/sh
export APP_ENV=production
export PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin
exec /absolute/path/to/program --option
Save the wrapper somewhere the job’s account can read and execute it. Set any required working directory explicitly in the wrapper rather than assuming cron starts in the directory you expect. Keep secrets out of broadly readable files and logs.

Make the shell and command syntax match
Cronie runs command fields through /bin/sh by default, or through the shell selected by the crontab’s SHELL setting. If the job genuinely needs Bash, and Bash is installed, set SHELL=/bin/bash or use a wrapper with a Bash shebang. Otherwise, write the command or script to be compatible with the chosen shell.

Review quoting for values that contain spaces or shell metacharacters. In Cronie’s command field, an unescaped percent sign has special meaning: the text after it can be passed to the command’s standard input rather than treated as part of the command. Check for it in date formats, URLs, and other arguments if the command behaves unexpectedly. Cronie crontab manual

Test with a reduced environment
A useful check is to run the command with a sparse environment while preserving the intended user and permissions. This will not reproduce every detail of a cron daemon, but it can reveal hidden dependence on shell startup files or variables that were never exported.
env -i HOME="$HOME" PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin APP_ENV=production
/absolute/path/to/program --option
Adjust the values and executable path for the actual job. If this test fails, fix the missing dependency or environment setting before returning to cron. If it succeeds but the scheduled job still fails, compare the job’s captured error output, account, shell, paths, and crontab syntax with the test conditions.
Choose between a crontab entry, wrapper, and another scheduler
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute executable paths | A job that needs one or a few known programs. | Command selection is explicit, but paths must be updated if software moves. |
Explicit PATH |
A job that calls multiple programs by name. | Convenient to manage, but directories must match the host and avoid unsafe locations for privileged jobs. |
| Crontab variable assignments | A few static environment values. | Compact, but less suited to multi-step setup and sensitive configuration. |
| Wrapper script | Several exports, a working directory, or setup and error handling that should be auditable together. | Adds a file whose interpreter, permissions, paths, and access controls must be maintained. |
| Service manager | A task that depends on managed environment configuration, a working directory, restart policy, or service lifecycle. | Availability and configuration vary by system; it is not a universal replacement for cron. |
Remove temporary diagnostics safely
Once the job works, remove environment dumps and unnecessary debug output. Environment values can include tokens or credentials, and logs can reveal internal paths. Keep only the operational logging you need and restrict access to it.
