A typical M.2 Wi-Fi card needs compatible antennas for useful reception and a supported driver to work with its operating system. It does not need a SIM card: SIMs are for cellular WWAN service, not ordinary Wi-Fi. Before buying or installing a card, confirm its exact model and your computer’s compatibility—M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee that modules are interchangeable.
What an M.2 Wi-Fi card needs
- Antennas: Suitable antenna leads must connect to the card for normal wireless reception. A laptop may already have compatible leads; a loose replacement card may not include antennas.
- Driver: The operating system must support the adapter. It may already have a suitable driver, so manual installation is not always necessary.
- SIM: Not needed for Wi-Fi. A SIM or eSIM is associated with cellular WWAN hardware and carrier service.
Antennas: check the card and computer before buying parts
Intel says, “Wireless antennas are generally provided by each original equipment manufacturer (OEM), as they will need to fit each computer and may subject to country-specific regulatory requirements.” (Intel, Type of Wi-Fi Antenna Connectors Required for Intel Wireless Cards, last reviewed January 21, 2022.) In a laptop, antenna leads are often routed through the display assembly, so an installed card may already have the required wiring. If those leads are absent or damaged, a separate antenna kit may be needed.

For the Intel M.2 adapters covered in that article, the RF receptacle measures 2 mm × 2 mm × 0.60 mm, with a 1.5 mm outer diameter. Intel says the matching plug must also suit the antenna assembly’s allowable mating height and cable diameter. These specifications apply to the cited Intel adapters; they do not establish that a cable will fit every M.2 wireless card. Intel suggests searching for “M.2 wireless antenna” or “NGFF antenna.”

Before purchasing an antenna kit, verify the exact card’s connector, cable length, chassis mounting method, existing leads and computer compatibility. A concrete example of a kit that includes antennas is Intel’s AX210 IOT kit: its contents list two optimized external antennas and a bracket with RF cables installed. That kit requires an M.2 2230 Key E connector and cannot be installed in a Key M or Key B socket. (Intel, Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 (Gig+) IOT Kit Content and Requirements, last reviewed January 21, 2022.) Kit contents vary; do not assume a card sold by itself includes antenna parts.

Drivers: use a package that matches the adapter and operating system
A supported driver lets the operating system communicate with the wireless adapter. First check the computer maker’s support page: its package may be tailored to the laptop or prebuilt system, and the manufacturer may limit which wireless cards it supports. If the operating system already recognizes the adapter with a suitable driver, there may be nothing to install manually.
If Wi-Fi is missing or unstable after an upgrade, identify the precise adapter model and operating system before downloading anything. Intel directs users to its Driver & Support Assistant or to select an operating system and download a driver manually; available support depends on the adapter and OS. See Intel’s Wi-Fi driver download guidance (last reviewed August 10, 2026). Its AX200 downloads listing includes Windows 10 and Windows 11 package entries dated March 24, 2026, and February 17, 2026. Those are dated examples for that adapter, not a recommendation for other models or operating systems.

SIM cards are for cellular WWAN, not Wi-Fi
A Wi-Fi WLAN card connects to a nearby access point or router and does not require a SIM. Cellular WWAN hardware connects to a mobile carrier instead. Lenovo’s Linux User Guide says, “To connect to a 4G or 5G cellular data network, you must have a wireless wide area network (WWAN) module and a nano-SIM card installed.” The guide also requires a carrier plan and notes that service and plan availability vary by location. (Lenovo Linux User Guide, “Connect to a cellular network.”)
| Check | Wi-Fi WLAN module | Cellular WWAN module |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Wi-Fi access point or router | Mobile carrier network |
| SIM and service | No SIM needed for Wi-Fi access | SIM or eSIM and an active plan may be required, depending on the system and module |
| Antennas | Needs suitable Wi-Fi antenna paths | Uses cellular antenna paths specified for the module and system |
| Software | Requires operating-system support for the adapter | Requires operating-system and modem/WWAN support |
| Compatibility | Check slot key and interface, system support, antenna connectors and driver | Check WWAN readiness, module support, SIM/eSIM arrangement, carrier bands and plan |
Some computers offer Wi-Fi and WWAN as separate options or modules. A WWAN module may use a physical SIM or eSIM, but the Lenovo example does not establish that every cellular product uses a physical SIM. Check the module’s markings or model information for WLAN/Wi-Fi versus WWAN/LTE/5G rather than inferring its function from its M.2 shape.

Check M.2 compatibility before upgrading
M.2 covers a family of form factors and connector arrangements; it does not make every module compatible with every socket. The card’s interface, keying and length must match the computer, and BIOS or firmware support and OEM restrictions can also matter. Intel says its AX200 uses a PCIe interface and gives M.2 Key A or Key E sockets as examples; motherboard, BIOS and M.2-port compatibility still depend on the computer design. (Intel, Minimum Processor Required to Use Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 (GIG+), last reviewed September 15, 2023.) That guidance about the AX200 is not universal permission to install it—or another Key E card—in any computer.
Before ordering a replacement or upgrade, use the exact computer model’s service manual or parts list and confirm:
