Not always. Always-On Display (AOD) uses power to keep a dimmed screen visible, while Raise to Wake uses power when motion wakes the screen. Which costs more depends on the device, screen settings and how often—and for how long—the screen wakes. There is no reliable universal head-to-head result across phones and watches.
Why the two settings use battery differently
Always-On Display
AOD is a reduced-power display state, not a zero-power state. On Apple Watch, Apple says the screen dims and an app interface updates much less frequently than when the app is foregrounded. The power cost also depends on what the display shows: Apple’s developer guidance explains that OLED pixels use individual power, so a dim, mostly black screen can consume less than a bright, colorful one. Apple’s Always On design guidance and its WWDC22 battery-consumption session describe these considerations.

Raise to Wake
Raise to Wake activates the display when the device detects the relevant motion. Its battery cost depends on how often it triggers and how long the screen stays awake each time. A device that wakes frequently can use more power than one whose screen remains mostly asleep; the setting’s name alone does not tell you which behavior will use less.

There is no authoritative controlled comparison establishing that AOD always drains more—or less—than Raise to Wake across devices. Official help pages recommend turning AOD off as a battery-saving measure, but they do not quantify its cost against motion-triggered waking. Google Pixel battery guidance lists turning off Always-on Display among battery-saving steps, and Samsung’s Always On Display support page likewise presents disabling it as a way to save battery.

Apple’s iPhone battery-test information says audio playback time decreases when AOD is visible compared with when the phone is face down or covered. That demonstrates a cost in that test context, but it is not a direct comparison with Raise to Wake. Apple’s test notes do not establish a universal difference between the two settings.
A Macworld test published October 1, 2026 examined iPhone AOD use against the display turning off, not against Raise to Wake. It also describes situations in which AOD may be suppressed, such as Sleep mode, face-down placement, a paired Apple Watch not being nearby, or CarPlay. Those behaviors are relevant to that iPhone discussion and should not be assumed for every device. Read the Macworld test.

One Apple Watch Series 7 GPS owner reported three 30-hour tests with different display and wake settings on watchOS 9.3.1. That is an individual setup, not a controlled published study or a basis for a general percentage or battery-hours claim. See the user’s comparison.
Which setting should you use?
- Choose longer battery life first: Try switching AOD off. Google and Samsung explicitly include this as a battery-saving step, though neither gives a universal saving amount.
- Choose glanceability: Keep AOD on if seeing the time or other screen information without a gesture is useful. If your device allows it, use a darker, simpler face or lower brightness to limit display power use.
- Consider your habits: If you raise your wrist or phone often and Raise to Wake keeps activating the screen, its cumulative use may matter. Conversely, AOD draws power while visible, even when you are not actively checking the display.
How to compare them on your own device
A meaningful personal comparison needs similar conditions; a single day’s battery percentage is not enough to isolate the display setting. Keep the device and other usage as steady as practical, and account for these factors:

- Device model, operating-system version, battery health and network configuration.
- Brightness and the AOD face or content, including complications and notifications.
- How frequently Raise to Wake triggers and how long the screen remains on afterward.
- Background activity and daily use, which can change battery drain independently of either display setting.
- Whether sleep, pocket or face-down detection, or another context automatically suppresses AOD on your device.
Compare similar days with one setting changed at a time. Treat the result as specific to your device and routine: it can help you choose a setting, but it does not establish which option is more efficient for all phones or watches.
