Sony says it is on by default; turn it off in the same menu if a game shows unexpected visual effects. This option is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. The separate Performance Mode or Resolution Mode preference sets a default for supported PS5 games, while PS4 game enhancement has its own setting and display requirement.
Enable or disable Enhance PSSR Image Quality
PSSR is Sony’s upscaling technology. Its image-quality toggle is a PS5 Pro system setting, not the same control as a game’s Performance or Resolution mode.

- On a PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 model group, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Enhance PSSR Image Quality and switch it on or off. Sony says the option is on by default.
The result depends on the game. If you see unexpected visual effects, return to this setting and turn it off; Sony advises that it can be disabled at any time. A setting change does not guarantee a particular resolution or a better-looking image in every title.
Set the default graphics preference for PS5 games
Performance Mode or Resolution Mode is a game preset, separate from the PSSR toggle. To change the default:
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
Sony describes Performance Mode as prioritizing smoother motion and Resolution Mode as prioritizing higher graphic quality. The preference applies only to PS5 games that offer those modes. It does not force a game to include them, nor does it promise a fixed frame rate or resolution.
Check the individual game too
If a game has its own graphics or display menu, check that menu as well. The console preset is a default preference; a title may offer different choices or no such modes at all. When the game provides a choice, use its own menu to select the option you want and assess the result in that title.

Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games is a separate setting
PS5 Pro also has Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games, which is not the PSSR control and applies to some PS4 games. Sony limits this option to the CFI-7000 model group and requires a display that supports 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz.
- On an eligible PS5 Pro with a compatible display, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Choose Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games to enable or disable it.
If gameplay behaves unexpectedly with this enhancement enabled, Sony advises turning it off. This PS4 option does not replace the game preset for PS5 titles.
