No. AI can generate and modify code, but current evidence does not show that programming knowledge has become obsolete. Knowing how to code still helps you define a problem, give an AI useful context, judge its output, test what it does, debug failures, and maintain the result.
What changed when AI began writing code?
AI coding tools can help produce or modify code, and developers also use or want help with other parts of their work. But assistance is not the same as understanding: a plausible-looking answer may not meet the real requirement, handle an edge case, or fit the rest of a system.

How useful AI is depends partly on the task. In an October 2025 mixed-methods study of 860 developers, Microsoft Research found different patterns for different kinds of work: strong current use and interest in improving AI support for coding and testing; high demand for reducing toil such as documentation and operations; and clearer limits for relationship-centered work such as mentoring. The study’s authors report that developers’ evaluations of tasks predict their openness to AI use. Microsoft Research’s study points to a varied workflow, not a single replacement for developer judgment.

Yes—especially when you need to tell whether the generated code solves the right problem. Coding knowledge gives you ways to turn a vague goal into specific requirements, recognize when an answer is incomplete, and check how a change affects the larger program. These are practical implications of the task-level findings, not a formula for measuring every developer’s value.

Define the problem and provide context
An AI assistant can only work with the information it receives and the context available to it. You still need to explain what the program should do, what constraints matter, and how the new code fits existing behavior. Knowing the relevant concepts makes it easier to notice missing assumptions and ask for a more useful result.
Test behavior, not just appearance
Code that looks reasonable may still produce the wrong result. Understanding programming makes it easier to choose meaningful test cases, include boundary conditions, and interpret failures. Testing is also important when code was written by a person: the author of a change is not proof that the change works.
Rank #2
Debug and maintain the result
When a program fails, someone must trace the cause and decide what to change. In a maintained system, a working fix must also avoid breaking other behavior and remain understandable to whoever works on it next. AI can assist with suggestions, but the developer remains responsible for deciding whether those suggestions are sound.
Do reported productivity gains prove that AI makes every developer more productive?
No. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, 52% of developers agreed that AI tools and/or AI agents had a positive effect on their productivity. The finding is based on 31,636 responses to that item and reports respondents’ perceptions; it does not establish a causal increase in output or a uniform benefit for all developers. Stack Overflow also notes that its survey participants are self-selected. Read the Stack Overflow 2025 survey results.
Rank #3
Keep the distinction clear: an individual’s positive impression is useful evidence about experience with a tool, but it is not the same as a measured improvement in team delivery, software quality, or long-term maintenance. Tool adoption and perceived productivity also do not establish effects on employment.
Does learning to code still matter—and can AI be part of learning?
Developers continue to learn. In the same Stack Overflow 2025 survey, 69% said they had spent time in the preceding year learning coding techniques or a programming language, and 44% said they learned with AI-enabled tools. These are reported behaviors, not evidence that AI-assisted learning is more or less effective than other approaches.
Rank #4
A GitHub-published survey in 2023 found that 57% of developers believed AI coding tools helped improve their coding language skills. That figure describes respondents’ beliefs; it is not a controlled study demonstrating a learning outcome. GitHub’s survey account should be read with that qualification.

AI can be one resource for learning, for example by asking for an explanation or exploring an alternative approach. To build durable understanding, work through problems yourself, run the code, inspect what happens, and investigate errors rather than treating a generated answer as proof. A tool can help you practice, but the evidence cited here does not compare learning methods or show which produces better results.

What does knowing how to code mean now?
It still means understanding enough to make software work, but the work can involve more than typing every line yourself. A practical definition is the ability to reason about code—whether written by you, an AI system, or both—and to verify, debug, and maintain it.
- Problem definition: State the desired behavior and constraints clearly.
- Technical judgment: Assess whether a proposed solution fits the task and surrounding system.
- Verification: Test expected behavior and cases likely to reveal mistakes.
- Debugging: Use errors and unexpected results to find the cause, not just request another answer.
- Maintenance: Make changes that remain understandable and do not casually break existing behavior.
These capabilities do not mean every programmer must work in the same way or master every tool. They explain why the ability to produce code is only one part of programming knowledge, even when AI can help with production.
Does AI mean coding jobs will disappear?
The evidence cited here does not quantify general developer job displacement or establish an employment forecast. Survey results about tool use, perceived productivity, or learning beliefs cannot answer how many jobs will change or disappear. Claims about job outcomes require separate evidence; they should not be inferred from the fact that AI can generate code.
