For specific text and illustration tasks, peer-reviewed lifecycle studies have estimated that AI can use less energy or produce fewer emissions than a human workflow under stated assumptions. Video generation is a major exception: early evidence indicates it can be significantly more energy-intensive than other generative-AI formats, especially when many attempts are needed to reach professional quality.
Why one simple comparison does not work
“AI-generated content” covers a single text answer, a high-resolution image, a music track, or a sequence of video generations. Each modality uses different models, hardware, output sizes and editing cycles. Human production is just as variable: a short article written on a laptop is not equivalent to a filmed commercial edited on a workstation.

A fair comparison must match the task and the quality target. It should count how much content is produced, how many drafts or retries are required, and which parts of the workflow are included. A result that looks precise but leaves those choices unstated is not a general fact about AI.

- Modality: text, image, audio and video have very different computational demands.
- Model and hardware: model size, accelerator type, utilization and data-center design affect energy per output.
- Output specification: word count, image resolution, audio duration, video frame rate and clip length all change the workload.
- Iteration: rejected generations, prompt changes, upscaling, inpainting, editing and quality checks can multiply the initial cost.
- Lifecycle boundary: an estimate may include inference only, or allocate a share of training, cooling, hardware manufacture, software development and disposal.
- Electricity mix: the same number of watt-hours can produce different carbon emissions depending on the grid.
- Human baseline: a comparison may count a person’s computer, monitor, office, commuting, collaboration and revision time—or only the electricity used by a device.
What peer-reviewed comparisons found
A 2024 Scientific Reports lifecycle assessment compared Llama-3-70B and Gemma-2B-it with human content production. Under the study’s assumptions, the evaluated AI systems could use less energy than the human baseline. Results varied by model and geography, showing why the finding cannot be converted into a fixed “AI is X times better” rule.

The study’s conclusion applies to its specified models, output lengths, locations and accounting boundaries. Changing any of those inputs can change the ranking. A smaller model serving a short answer is not evidence that every large model, long response or heavily edited project has the same footprint.
A separate Scientific Reports study estimated substantially lower emissions for the AI writing and illustration systems it evaluated than for human counterparts. It explicitly excluded the software-development cycle and software engineers. It also noted that both human and AI content may need revision. The result is therefore a bounded comparison of defined production scenarios, not a complete statement about the lifetime impact of AI content.
What these studies do—and do not—prove
- They show that AI can be lower-energy for particular, defined text or illustration workflows.
- They do not establish a universal advantage for all models, providers, countries or content lengths.
- They do not settle the question when training, chip manufacture, software engineering or end-of-life impacts are outside the boundary.
- They do not imply that replacing a human workflow always reduces total environmental impact, especially when AI output requires many retries or extensive editing.
How much electricity does one AI answer use?
Google reported that a median Gemini Apps text prompt used 0.24 watt-hours (Wh) of energy, emitted 0.03 grams of carbon-dioxide equivalent (gCO2e) and consumed 0.26 milliliters of water—about five drops— in a May 2025 point-in-time analysis. Google says the figures vary with models, hardware and user behavior and were not independently verified.
That is a provider-specific estimate for a median text prompt, not a universal value for every Gemini request, every AI service or a ChatGPT answer. “Median” also means half of the measured prompts were above the midpoint and half below it; it does not describe a maximum, a long document, an image request or a multi-step agent workflow. A response that triggers tool calls, repeated generations or long context processing can have a different workload.
At 0.24 Wh, one prompt would equal 0.00024 kilowatt-hours. Multiplying that number by a large number of prompts is straightforward, but treating the product as a complete footprint still requires decisions about training allocation, data-center overhead, cooling, hardware and the electricity mix. The water figure likewise depends on the provider’s accounting method and local operating conditions.

Why video is a likely high-energy exception
Carbon Trust’s current work distinguishes video from many other generative-AI tasks. Its early evidence indicates that AI video generation can be significantly more energy-intensive than other forms of generative AI, with emissions that rise quickly when professional-quality content requires many generations.
Video combines demanding elements: multiple frames, temporal consistency, motion and often high resolution. A creator may generate several clips, reject them, alter prompts, extend a sequence, upscale it and render variations before selecting a usable result. The final published clip can therefore represent many failed or intermediate generations.
AI video versus conventional production
It is not accurate to compare one successful AI clip with the entire electricity use of a film set, nor to assume that every conventional shoot is automatically more efficient. Human video production can involve travel, lighting, cameras, storage, editing workstations and multiple takes. The proper comparison defines the same deliverable and includes the same quality, duration and revision expectations on both sides.
For a short concept animation produced with a handful of attempts, AI may avoid some physical equipment or travel. For a polished sequence requiring dozens of generations, the computational workload can dominate. Carbon Trust’s conclusion is directional rather than a single universal ratio because model settings and workflows differ.
Is an AI image worse for the climate than taking or drawing one?
There is no single answer. The illustration study in Scientific Reports found substantially lower emissions for the evaluated AI systems than for its human counterparts, within its stated assumptions. That does not mean every generated image beats every photograph or drawing.

A human image may involve a phone or camera, lighting, travel, studio power, image selection and editing. A drawing may use almost no operational electricity but still involve a digital tablet, computer and revisions. An AI workflow may start with one generation but then add dozens of variations, upscaling and edits. To compare them, specify the number of finished images, resolution, retries and post-processing on each side.
Why published estimates vary so widely
Different lifecycle boundaries
Some calculations measure only inference—the processing used to answer a prompt. Others allocate a share of model training across expected outputs. Still others include data-center power overhead, cooling water, chip manufacture, software development and equipment disposal. Two honest estimates can therefore disagree because they count different things.
Indirect measurement
The U.S. Government Accountability Office has noted: “Generative AI uses significant energy and water resources, but companies are generally not reporting details of these uses.” Without consistent provider disclosure, analysts often infer energy from server specifications, utilization assumptions, benchmark workloads or data-center averages.
The International Telecommunication Union has also reported that training-energy estimates often rely on indirect proxies and that other lifecycle stages remain underexplored. A number derived from a proxy is not necessarily wrong, but its uncertainty should be visible rather than presented as a meter reading for every prompt.
Changing models and hardware
Providers regularly update models, batching, scheduling and accelerators. A prompt sent today may run on different hardware or a different model than the same prompt sent months earlier. Improvements in efficiency can reduce energy per output while increased usage, longer context windows or higher-resolution generation raise total demand.

Different carbon intensities
Energy and emissions are related but not interchangeable. A workload using the same Wh can emit more or less CO2e depending on whether the electricity comes from a carbon-intensive grid, a lower-carbon grid or a provider’s contracted supply. Water use also varies with cooling technology, climate and accounting boundaries.

Organizations deciding whether to automate a content task should document the comparison before collecting numbers. Use the following procedure for a transparent estimate:
- Define the deliverable. Record the content type, length or resolution, duration, quality standard, language and number of final assets.
- Log every attempt. Count initial generations, retries, rejected outputs, edits, upscaling, exports and review passes. Do not count only the asset that was published.
- Identify the AI system. Record the model version, provider, hardware or region when disclosed, settings and date. A provider’s prompt estimate should be labeled with its measurement date.
- Separate operational stages. Keep inference, post-processing, storage and delivery distinct. If training is allocated, state the allocation rule and expected number of outputs.
- Set the human baseline. Record device type, monitor use, office or home energy assumptions, collaboration, travel, filming equipment, labor time and revisions. State whether commuting and office infrastructure are included.
- Apply local energy data. Convert watt-hours to emissions using the relevant electricity-carbon intensity, and identify whether the factor is location-based or based on a contractual supply claim.
- Report uncertainty. Give a range or sensitivity analysis when utilization, retries, training allocation or grid intensity is unknown. Mark provider figures that have not been independently verified.
- Compare the same quality target. A fast draft and a broadcast-ready asset are different workloads. The winning option can change when quality, speed or revision requirements change.
How organizations can reduce content-workload impacts
Choose the smallest adequate model
For routine classification, short copy or simple transformations, a smaller model may meet the quality target with less computation than a large general-purpose model. Measure quality and revision rates, not just model size: an apparently efficient model that requires many retries can erase its advantage.
Control retries and resolution
Set a maximum number of generations, test prompts at low resolution, and upscale only selected outputs. For video, storyboard and reject weak concepts before launching long or high-resolution generations.

Reuse approved assets
Templates, style guides, reusable prompts and human-edited components reduce repeated generation. Store and reuse suitable outputs instead of recreating near-identical variants.
Track workloads over time
Keep a monthly record of prompt counts, output sizes, model versions and retry rates. When a provider publishes a new energy methodology, record the date and avoid mixing figures from incompatible methods in one trend line.
Include the whole workflow in decisions
Automation can shift work rather than remove it. If employees must fact-check, rewrite, retouch or moderate every output, those activities belong in the comparison. Likewise, include travel and physical equipment when AI replaces an on-location shoot, but do not assume they disappear if the AI asset still requires a conventional production stage.
What can be concluded today
For defined text and illustration scenarios, available peer-reviewed estimates show that AI can use less energy or produce fewer emissions than a human workflow under particular assumptions. That is a conditional result, not a universal property of AI. Google’s 0.24 Wh median Gemini Apps text-prompt estimate illustrates how a provider can quantify one workload, but its date, model and methodology limit how broadly it can be applied.

Across all media, incomplete corporate disclosure and inconsistent lifecycle methods prevent a definitive cross-media ranking. The most defensible answer is therefore task-specific: match the deliverable, count every attempt and revision, declare the lifecycle boundary, and attach uncertainty to the result.
