Yes, a Fios Wi-Fi extender can deliver slower speeds when it connects to the router wirelessly, especially if that backhaul link is weak or congested. A wired Ethernet or supported coax/MoCA connection avoids relying on Wi-Fi for the router-to-extender link. An extender can improve coverage in a dead zone, but it does not increase the speed tier supplied by your Fios service.
Why a Wi-Fi extender can make Fios feel slower
An extender has two jobs: receive data from the router, then send it to devices nearby. The router-to-extender connection is called the backhaul. With wireless backhaul, data must travel over Wi-Fi to the extender before it reaches your device. If that link is weak or competing with interference and traffic, performance can suffer.

Verizon says that Wi-Fi-backhaul performance can be slower and depends on the router’s Wi-Fi reach, materials in the home, and neighboring Wi-Fi traffic. The effect varies by equipment and home; Verizon’s cited materials do not establish a typical speed-loss percentage for Fios households. Verizon’s Fios Extender 3.1 User Manual
A stronger signal in a room that previously had poor coverage may still make Wi-Fi more usable there, even if the speed is lower than beside the router. Verizon describes the extender as a coverage device, not a way to increase Wi-Fi speed. Verizon’s Fios Extender FAQs

Wireless versus wired backhaul
| Backhaul | How it connects | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless | The extender connects to the router over Wi-Fi. | Convenient, but performance depends on the quality of the Wi-Fi link, distance, home materials, and neighboring traffic. |
| Ethernet | A cable connects the router and extender. | Does not rely on Wi-Fi for the backhaul link. Confirm that your extender and setup support this connection. |
| Coax/MoCA | Supported coax wiring carries the connection between compatible equipment. | Can provide wired backhaul where the equipment and home wiring support it. Check the model-specific instructions. |
Verizon supports Ethernet and coax/MoCA wired-backhaul options for its Fios Extender, and its setup guidance says wired placement is more flexible. The exact connection options depend on the equipment and wiring in your home. Verizon Fios Extender support
Some extender generations may have dedicated wireless-backhaul features. Do not assume a particular band or performance benefit applies to every Fios extender: check the documentation for your exact model.

Where to place a wireless Fios extender
Place a wireless extender between the router and the area with weak coverage, where it can still receive a healthy signal from the router. Putting it at the far edge of a dead zone can leave the extender with a poor backhaul connection to relay. Move it gradually and use the status indicator described in the instructions for your model.
For the Fios Extender covered by Verizon’s FAQ, a solid white light indicates an optimal location, slow-blinking yellow means it is too far from the router, and fast-blinking yellow means it is too close. Indicator behavior can be model-specific, so verify the guidance for your device. Verizon’s Fios Extender FAQs

- Keep the extender away from large metal objects.
- Verizon recommends keeping it at least 10 feet from cordless phones or microwaves.
- Avoid locations exposed to heat, moisture, dust, or extreme cold, and follow the model’s ventilation and orientation instructions.
These placement recommendations are from Verizon’s Fios Extender support page.
Check compatibility before connecting an extender
Verizon’s support information identifies the Fios Extender as compatible with the Fios Router G3100 and Verizon Router CR1000A; its product information also discusses CR1000A/CR1000B. Compatibility is equipment-specific, so check Verizon’s current details for your precise router and extender model rather than assuming older, third-party, or other Fios-branded devices work the same way. - Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
How to troubleshoot slow Wi-Fi after installing an extender
- Compare locations: Test the same device beside the router and in the extender area. If Wi-Fi is slow in both places, the issue may not be limited to the extender’s coverage area.
- Check the extender’s status light: If you use wireless backhaul, consult the instructions for your model. If it indicates a weak link or that the extender is too far away, move it toward the router.
- Try wired backhaul if available: Use Ethernet or supported coax/MoCA wiring to avoid relying on a Wi-Fi link between router and extender.
- Compare under similar conditions: Use the same device and similar conditions at the router and extender locations. This household comparison can help identify a location-specific difference; it is not a guaranteed diagnostic test or a universal measure of extender speed loss.
- Verify compatibility: Check the exact router and extender models against Verizon’s current support information.
What a speed test can—and cannot—tell you
A result from one room or one device describes that particular setup, not every Fios home. The device, band, extender placement, backhaul quality, interference, and test conditions all affect what you see. Compare like with like, and avoid treating a single result as a general percentage reduction caused by extenders.
