Verify the presale through the project’s independently reached official channels, check the exact domain, investigate its people and claims, and assess the investment separately from the website’s authenticity. Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on a website. Read every wallet request and do not sign a permission or transaction you cannot explain. These steps reduce risk; they cannot certify a presale or guarantee returns.
Start with the official route, not the promotion
Do not open a presale from an unsolicited message, advertisement, influencer link, or link printed on an unfamiliar token or NFT. Instead, reach an established official project channel independently and follow its presale link. Compare the full domain character by character with the expected address. Watch for substituted letters, extra words, unusual endings, and misspellings.

A polished site is not proof. Scam operators can copy a project’s appearance, use lookalike URLs, create fake dapps, or publish news-style pages and hype around a familiar name. Search ads and widely shared posts can also lead to imitations. MetaMask’s guidance on token pre-sale scams recommends checking the URL and reaching promotions through official project channels.
Check the people, project, and claims
Research the people and entities named in the offering using sources independent of the presale site. Search the project and promoter names alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint,” as the FTC advises in its consumer guidance on cryptocurrency and scams. Compare the presale terms with the project’s own documentation. Look for a clear explanation of what the token is intended to do and what rights, if any, it gives its holder.

Urgency, guaranteed gains, or claims that an investment carries little or no risk are serious warning signs. The CFTC and SEC staff caution that fraudulent digital-asset sites often make such promises in their investor alert on fraudulent digital-asset websites. MetaMask also identifies hype and fear of missing out as common presale-scam tactics.
A token name, ticker, logo, social following, celebrity association, claimed audit, or exchange listing does not by itself establish that a promotion is genuine or that the token is sound. Anyone can create a token with a given name and supply. Check the underlying claims rather than treating familiar branding or popularity as verification.
Know what the wallet is asking you to do
A wallet connection prompt is not the same thing as a token approval or a transaction. Do not assume that connecting means funds have moved, and do not assume that a later request is harmless. Read each wallet screen before approving or signing.

- Identify the network or chain shown.
- Check which asset is involved and the recipient or spender named.
- Understand the operation requested, including any amount or permission.
- For a token approval, note that it can authorize a dapp to move that token up to the approved cap.
- Decline any request whose purpose or effect you cannot explain; consult the wallet provider’s official documentation if the wording is unclear.
Wallet warnings and safety controls can help, but their presence or absence does not prove that a particular presale is legitimate. A warning-free screen is not a certification.
Never give a site your Secret Recovery Phrase
Do not type your Secret Recovery Phrase into a presale page, support form, chat, or “verification” flow. MetaMask says a website should never ask for it and warns that a fraudulent site requesting it can compromise the wallet. Its guide to verifying the real MetaMask wallet states: “You should never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on any website, regardless of how convincing it is.” Obtain wallet software only through official wallet links or official extension stores.
Assess the investment separately from the website
An authentic project page does not make its token a good investment. The CFTC’s advisory on buying digital coins or tokens recommends examining the rights attached to a token and factors that may affect its value:

- Potential future demand, uses, and competitors.
- Liquidity and the ability to sell.
- Changes to the underlying technology.
- The risk of theft, including through hacking.
Buying solely because you expect to sell later at a higher price is speculation. A white paper, roadmap, audit, large community, or listing may provide information to evaluate, but none proves future value or removes the risk of loss.
Keep legal claims specific
Do not assume that every presale token is a security, or that calling a token “utility” puts it outside securities law. The legal treatment depends on the offering’s facts and applicable law. The SEC’s April 22, 2026 summary of transactions involving crypto assets explains that securities laws apply to crypto assets when they are securities, and that some assets that are not securities may become subject to those laws when offered and sold under an investment contract. This is not a classification of any unnamed presale.
