A separate sound card or USB DAC can help if your current analog output has audible noise, cannot drive your headphones to a clean, adequate level, or lacks a connection you need. If your onboard audio is already quiet and loud enough, simply moving to a separate device may not create a noticeable change. And if you use a USB headset with its own audio processing, your computer’s analog sound card is not handling its playback.
What a sound card does—and which one handles your audio
A sound card converts digital audio into an analog signal for speakers or headphones and may also provide inputs, microphone handling, and other features. That hardware can be built into a motherboard, installed as an internal PCIe card, or supplied by an external USB device. The label “dedicated” or a codec model alone does not establish that one option will sound better; implementation and the rest of the setup matter. SoundGuys explains the different forms of sound cards, while beyerdynamic describes how a separate device can affect the audio path.

Analog headphones and speakers
When analog headphones or speakers plug into a motherboard or PC audio jack, the computer’s analog output hardware is part of the playback chain. An internal card or external DAC/headphone amplifier can replace or bypass that part, depending on how it is connected.

USB headsets
A USB headset with its own audio processing uses its own USB audio path rather than the PC’s analog output. Replacing the motherboard’s sound card therefore is unlikely to change that headset’s playback path.
#1 Best Overall
- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
When a separate sound card can make a difference
- Persistent noise on the analog output: If you hear hiss, hum, or other noise with analog headphones or speakers, and troubleshooting does not resolve it, an external DAC may bypass the computer’s analog output stage. It is a possible fix, not a guaranteed one. Puget Systems discusses using an external DAC.
- Insufficient clean headphone volume: If your headphones do not get loud enough without distortion, a suitable headphone amplifier may address a real output limitation. Whether it helps depends on the headphones and the existing output.
- A missing connection or feature: A card or USB device may provide an input, output, or other capability your current setup lacks. Choose for that specific need rather than assuming a sound-quality gain.
These are conditional use cases. The available sources do not establish that every listener will hear an improvement from a separate device.
Which audio option fits your setup?
| Option | May fit when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Motherboard audio | Your current analog output is clean, sufficiently loud, and has the connections you need. | Motherboard implementations vary. A codec name by itself does not show how the complete output performs. Source: SoundGuys |
| Internal PCIe sound card | You have a desktop and need particular analog connections or features. | Confirm a compatible slot and consider that the card remains inside the PC, where electrical interference can matter. Source: beyerdynamic; measurement context: Igor’sLAB |
| External USB DAC/headphone amplifier | You need to bypass the PC’s analog output, address a persistent noise issue, drive headphones more adequately, or add a needed connection. | It is not automatically an audible upgrade; match it to the actual output and headphones. Source: Puget Systems |
| USB headset with built-in audio | You want to use the headset’s own USB audio processing. | The PC’s analog sound card is bypassed for playback, so it is not the relevant upgrade. Source: beyerdynamic |
How to judge whether an upgrade is worthwhile
- Identify the output path. Note whether your headphones or speakers connect by analog jack or USB, and which device is doing the digital-to-analog conversion and amplification.
- Name the problem or requirement. Is there audible noise, inadequate clean volume, a missing connection, or another specific feature you need? If none applies, a sound card purchase has no clear problem to solve.
- Compare with the same equipment. Use the same headphones or speakers and match listening levels as closely as possible. A louder device can seem preferable even when loudness, rather than sound quality, explains the impression.
- Check the whole setup. Cables, connections, drivers, power, grounding, and the PC environment can affect the signal or its measurement. Do not infer performance solely from whether a device is onboard, PCIe, or USB.
Igor’sLAB reported −92.4 dB(A) A-weighted noise with direct power from a Topping P50 in its particular measurement arrangement. The article notes that measurement interface, power, grounding, USB, and the surrounding computer affect PC audio measurements. That single setup-specific result is not a universal sound-card specification or a category ranking. Read Igor’sLAB’s measurement discussion.

Troubleshoot crackling or noise before buying
Noise and crackling do not prove that a sound card is the cause. MSI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking audio drivers and cross-testing an external speaker when investigating motherboard-port noise. Try these checks in order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Test another pair of headphones or speakers to see whether the issue follows the original device.
- Check that the cable is fully connected and inspect it for damage; try another cable if available.
- If your PC has both front-panel and rear motherboard audio ports, compare them.
- Check the PC or motherboard maker’s current audio driver and install it if needed.
- If noise persists through a motherboard I/O audio port, MSI advises sending the motherboard to an authorized service center for testing. See MSI’s audio-noise troubleshooting guidance.
What to expect from gaming, footsteps, and microphone quality
A separate device is not a general-purpose upgrade for every part of gaming audio. It can only affect the parts of the chain it handles, and any benefit depends on the actual limitation—such as inadequate headphone output or a needed connection. A USB headset follows its own audio path, so changing the PC’s analog sound card is not the relevant fix for that headset’s playback.

Microphone quality likewise depends on which input is actually used and how the microphone is connected. A new output card should not be assumed to improve a microphone that uses a different USB or headset audio path.
No controlled blind listening study or representative head-to-head results across current onboard audio, PCIe cards, and external DACs are established by the cited material. There is also no broad statistic here showing how often people hear a difference or the average size of an upgrade. Treat claims of a universal improvement, including better positional cues or footsteps, cautiously unless they address your specific hardware and listening path.
