Usually, no. Samsung’s standard software-update instructions do not describe a routine Galaxy Z Fold update as a factory reset or say it erases personal data. An update may change the interface or how software behaves, however, and Samsung does not guarantee that every setting will remain unchanged on every Fold model. Check the release information for your exact model, carrier and region before installing.
What happens during a normal update?
A routine update downloads and installs software; it is a different operation from a factory reset. While the update is running, you cannot use the device and files may be inaccessible until installation finishes, according to Samsung’s update guidance. That temporary inaccessibility is not the same as deletion.

Samsung’s general update instructions do not say that a normal update resets personal settings. Its separate reset guidance distinguishes a factory data reset—which removes personal data—from “Reset all settings,” which does not erase accounts, personal data or settings for downloaded apps. Because Samsung does not publish a universal guarantee covering every setting on every Fold generation and software version, check the notice for the particular update rather than treating “security update” as a promise that nothing else changes.
Check what your specific Fold update includes
- Open Settings and select Software update or System updates. The label and menu route can vary by model and software version.
- Read the update notice before installing. For details after installation, Samsung points users to Last update or System Update history; labels may vary.
- If the notice is not detailed enough, check your carrier’s release notes for the exact Fold model and market. Samsung says available screens and settings can vary by service provider, software version and model.
A Galaxy Z Fold6 manual for model SM-F956B, revision August 2024, describes security updates as strengthening device security and notes that emergency security updates may install automatically. What if the update fails?
An update failure can lead to a separate recovery process, which is not the same as routine installation. Samsung warns that emergency recovery after an update failure may involve a factory data reset. A factory data reset removes personal data, so follow the recovery instructions carefully and back up important files first whenever the phone is usable.
Back up before a reset or recovery—not because every update is a reset
Samsung advises copying important data before a factory reset or update-failure recovery. Its guidance does not say that special physical backup hardware is required for an ordinary update. If the phone is working normally and you are installing a routine update, distinguish that action from a reset or emergency recovery before deciding what precautions are relevant.
