Yes for dampness and condensation, with limits: a dehumidifier can lower indoor humidity, which may reduce condensation and the moisture that supports mould growth. It will not fix a leak, remove mould already present, or treat allergies. Use it as one part of a moisture-control plan.
How dehumidifiers affect mould
Mould needs moisture to grow, so controlling dampness is central to limiting indoor mould. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states, “The key to mold control is moisture control.” A dehumidifier can help when excessive indoor humidity is contributing to the problem, but it does not remove existing mould or correct the water source.

The EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. A humidity gauge or hygrometer can help you check conditions and decide whether humidity reduction is needed. These are U.S. EPA guidance figures; the retrieved agency pages do not state a publication year.

First address the water source, such as a leak. For mould on hard surfaces, EPA guidance says to clean with water and detergent, then dry the surface fully. Absorbent materials with mould growth may need to be replaced. Extensive mould or water damage, or damage involving contaminated water, calls for professional help.

Can a dehumidifier reduce condensation?
It can, particularly when humid indoor air is condensing on cold surfaces such as windows or walls. Lowering humidity may reduce the amount of moisture available to condense. Ventilation or air conditioning may also help, depending on the circumstances; cold surfaces and insulation can contribute to the problem too. A dehumidifier will not address every cause of condensation.
Will it help with allergies?
Mould exposure can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. It can also trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mould. Reducing dampness may help control conditions that support mould, but the available EPA guidance does not establish that using a dehumidifier improves allergy symptoms. It is not an allergy or asthma treatment, and should not be relied on to remove airborne mould. Consult a medical professional about suspected symptoms.

What to do about indoor dampness
- Check humidity. Use a humidity gauge or hygrometer and compare the reading with the EPA’s advice to keep relative humidity below 60%, ideally 30%–50%.
- Reduce excess moisture. Use a dehumidifier when high indoor humidity is contributing to dampness. Ventilation and air conditioning are other possible humidity-control measures, depending on the home and conditions.
- Find and fix water sources. Repair leaks and address the cause of water intrusion rather than relying on the appliance to manage the symptoms.
- Dry wet materials promptly. EPA recommends drying damp or wet materials within 24–48 hours where possible. This is a target in its guidance, not a guarantee that mould will not grow.
- Handle existing mould separately. Clean suitable hard surfaces and dry them fully; replace absorbent materials with mould growth when needed. Seek professional help for extensive damage or contaminated water.
EPA guidance cited here is U.S.-focused. It identifies dehumidifiers as one option for reducing humidity, not a substitute for repairing water damage or responding to health concerns.
