Usually, no. A factory reset erases data stored on a phone, but it does not necessarily clear the ownership checks that can appear during setup. Google’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP), also called Google Device Protection in Samsung support materials, may ask for the screen lock or a Google Account previously added and synced to the device. A Samsung Galaxy reset may separately ask for the Samsung Account password. These prompts are ownership verification, not evidence that the reset failed.
What a factory reset does—and does not do
A factory reset removes data stored on the phone, including local apps and their data. Data backed up to a Google Account may be restored after you sign in. Erasing the phone is separate from proving that you are its owner: a protected device can still require account verification during setup. Which lock is asking for verification?
Read the provider named on the setup screen. Google FRP and Samsung Account verification are separate checks, and a Galaxy reset workflow can involve both.

Does the reset method make a difference?
It can affect when credentials are requested, but choosing a different reset route is not a reliable way to remove ownership verification. Exact behavior depends on the device and its software; follow the instructions for the particular model.

Before resetting a phone you can still access
- Back up important data. A reset erases local data; check Google’s reset guidance for preparation and recovery details.
- Confirm your credentials. Make sure you know the Google Account used on the phone and its password, and keep the screen-lock credential available. If a Samsung Account is present, be ready for its password prompt too.
- If transferring or giving away the phone, remove the Google Account before resetting while you can still use Settings. Samsung recommends this to prevent FRP in the scenario covered by its FRP instructions. Follow the device’s own account-removal steps and any on-screen prompts.
- Allow for a recent password change. Google recommends waiting 24 hours after changing the Google Account password before performing a factory reset. This is a reset precaution, not a guaranteed unlock timer. See Google’s guidance.
If setup is blocked after the reset
- Identify the account named on screen. Google verification and Samsung Account verification are not the same prompt.
- For Google verification, try the Google Account previously added and synced to the phone, or the old screen lock if that option is offered. A different or guest account will not satisfy the described FRP check. Follow Google’s Device Protection instructions.
- If you recently changed your Google password, wait before retrying. Google specifies 24 hours before a factory reset after a recent password change. Samsung UK says recovery followed by a wait of 24 hours or longer may be needed in its guidance; the required time can depend on the account circumstances and prompts. See Google and Samsung UK.
- If credentials are forgotten, use official account recovery. Google’s Android Help says, “If you can’t sign in to your Google Account, get sign-in help.” If recovery does not resolve a Galaxy verification issue, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center. Samsung US says service-center assistance may require proof of purchase: see its Google Device Protection guidance.
- If the phone belongs to an employer, contact its IT administrator. Android Enterprise FRP controls are configured by an administrator before a reset, and behavior depends on management mode and policy. See Android Enterprise’s FRP guidance.
Why bypass tools are not the right fix
Do not treat third-party FRP bypass utilities, firmware tricks, or lock-removal services as routine remedies. The official guidance supports account recovery and authorized assistance, not bypassing ownership verification. If you do not own the phone, return it to its owner or seller rather than attempting to access it.
