Docker Sandboxes are not ordinary containers: Docker documents each local Sandbox as a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel. They add agent-focused features such as a private Docker Engine, selectable workspace modes, network policy, and credential proxying. A separately managed VM can be a better fit when you need to control the guest operating system and infrastructure lifecycle yourself. Neither option is automatically safer or faster; the right choice depends on what the agent can access and how you intend to manage it.
How do Docker Sandboxes compare with separately managed VMs?
| Decision area | Docker Sandbox | Separately managed VM |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation | Local Sandbox runs in a microVM with its own kernel and a separate Docker Engine. | Isolation and administration depend on the hypervisor, guest configuration, host, and any cloud controls. |
| Workspace | Can run without a workspace mount, use a read-write host mount, or work in a private clone of a read-only-mounted repository. | Shared folders, disk images, and network access are configured for the particular VM environment. |
| Network and tools | Outbound TCP is governed by network policy. Local stdio MCP integrations execute on the host. | Guest networking, firewall rules, and tool integrations are configured by the operator. |
| Credentials | Docker documents a host-side proxy for credentials supplied through it; SSH-agent forwarding is an optional integration. | Secret access depends on how credentials, mounted files, metadata services, and agent sockets are configured. |
| Compute location | Local Sandboxes use host resources; cloud Sandboxes use Docker-managed compute. | Can use assigned local virtual hardware or resources from the chosen cloud provider. |
| Lifecycle and storage | Sandbox state persists until removal; the VM image, images, layers, and volumes use disk space. | Persistence and storage depend on the VM’s disk, snapshot, and lifecycle configuration. |
The word “VM” alone does not tell you what boundary an agent actually has. In either setup, check for host mounts, sockets, forwarded credentials, and integrations in addition to the guest boundary.

Are Docker Sandboxes containers or virtual machines?
For local Sandboxes, Docker’s documented model is a microVM, not a container that shares the host kernel. Docker Docs states: “Every sandbox runs inside a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel.” Docker also describes a separate Docker Engine for each Sandbox, so the agent’s Docker operations are not simply using the host’s ordinary Docker Engine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe agent has sudo privileges and full control of the Sandbox’s own filesystem. The meaningful isolation boundary is the VM; sudo inside it is not a separate privilege boundary that limits the agent within that VM.

What can an AI agent access outside its Sandbox?
Workspace files depend on the selected mode
Docker documents three relevant patterns: no workspace mount, a direct read-write mount, or a read-only source mount paired with a private clone for the agent’s work. A direct mount exposes the selected working tree for reading, writing, and deletion. With sbx run, omitting a workspace path uses the current directory, so check where the command is launched before starting an agent.
Clone mode prevents the agent’s edits from writing through to the mounted host repository, but it does not hide that repository’s contents. Files beneath its Git root remain readable, including untracked files such as .env when present there. A read-only mount is therefore a write-protection measure, not a way to keep repository secrets unreadable.
Network access is controlled, not absent
Docker’s current local default-security documentation says outbound TCP—including HTTP, HTTPS, and SSH—is blocked unless a rule allows the destination. UDP is disabled by default and ICMP is blocked; network rules can be customized. Treat those as documented defaults, not an assurance that every Sandbox has identical policy after configuration.

Host integrations can cross the boundary
Local stdio MCP servers execute on the host, outside the Sandbox. Giving an agent access to their tools therefore grants access to a trusted host integration; the server does not become isolated just because the agent calls it from a Sandbox.
SSH-agent forwarding can let processes in the Sandbox request signatures while the private key stays on the host. That avoids copying the key into the VM, but the agent still gains the ability to request signatures. Similarly, credentials explicitly passed into the Sandbox should be treated as available to the agent; Docker’s proxy design applies to credentials supplied through that proxy, not every credential in every configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you choose a Docker Sandbox?
- Choose a local Docker Sandbox when you want an agent-oriented microVM, a private Docker Engine, and a convenient choice of workspace boundary, while using the local machine’s resources.
- Choose a separately managed VM when your team needs direct control over guest lifecycle, operating-system administration, or infrastructure policy, and is prepared to configure and maintain those controls.
- Consider a cloud Sandbox or cloud VM when the agent should run remotely rather than on a developer’s machine; compare the actual service’s administration, network, storage, and pricing terms.
For untrusted tasks, prefer a mountless workflow or a private clone when it fits the job, and avoid granting unnecessary host integrations or credentials. If the agent needs to modify a working tree directly, a read-write mount is convenient but gives it authority over those mounted files. The operational setup—not just the product label—determines the practical exposure.

What changes between local and cloud Docker Sandboxes?
Docker documents local Sandboxes as using host compute and supporting integrations with local resources where supported, including GPU, USB, display, and nested virtualization. Cloud Sandboxes run on Docker-managed compute and cannot mount host paths or use host hardware. If an agent requires a local GPU or another device, that distinction can rule out the cloud workflow.
Docker’s overview, as documented on October 4, 2026, describes the sbx CLI and local Sandbox compute as free to use, cloud compute as pay-as-you-go, and model-provider charges as separate. It also describes organization-wide management of local network, filesystem, and MCP policies as a separate paid subscription. These commercial terms can change, so confirm the current terms for the product and organization before relying on them.
What happens to Sandbox state, and is one option faster?
Docker says local Sandbox files and installed state survive stops and restarts; removing the Sandbox deletes that state. Stopping is therefore not the same as deleting it. Direct-mounted host files remain on the host when the Sandbox is removed. Account for the VM image, Docker images, layers, and volumes when estimating local disk use.
The cited product documentation does not provide an independent head-to-head benchmark against conventional VMs. It supports no general claim that either approach boots faster, delivers higher agent throughput, or costs less for a given workload. Treat resource overhead as an architecture and configuration question, then compare the actual environments you plan to use.
