For affordable, web-first computing, a Chromebook is the most straightforward laptop alternative. Choose an Android tablet with a keyboard if Android apps and portability matter more than full desktop software; choose a Windows 2-in-1 if you need conventional PC programs in a convertible design. The right fit depends on what you need to run, and the tablet’s keyboard and accessories belong in the total cost.
Which alternative fits your work?
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Chromebook laptop | Browser-based work such as browsing, email, online documents, and video calls | Check whether required programs work well in a browser or on ChromeOS, and verify the specific model’s update schedule. |
| Android tablet with keyboard | Android apps, touch use, and portability | Mobile apps may lack features found in full laptop programs; a keyboard and other accessories can add cost. |
| Windows 2-in-1 | Desktop software and familiar PC workflows in a laptop/tablet form | Do not assume the convertible form makes it the least expensive choice; compare current local models. |

When a Chromebook is the best starting point
A Chromebook is a conventional laptop running ChromeOS. It suits work that can be done in a browser: web services, email, online documents, browsing, and video calls. Before buying, check that the web versions of your essential services include the features you actually use.

Check update support for the exact model
Google says ChromeOS devices receive automatic updates during their supported period, but support dates differ by model. Use Google’s ChromeOS Auto Update policy to check the device’s listed update date, especially if you are considering a used Chromebook. Google’s general update guidance is available in its Chromebook operating system update instructions. A statement that ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates is not a promise that every Chromebook you buy today has 10 years of support remaining.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Know the older-device app trade-off
Some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can opt into extended updates. Google says devices receiving those extended updates lose the ability to run Android apps, including access to the Play Store. Read Google’s extended updates support guidance and confirm the situation for the exact device before you choose that option.
Linux is useful for some development work, not a universal substitute
Google documents a Linux development environment for supported Chromebooks, including use of command-line tools, code editors, and IDEs. Its Linux setup and support guidance also describes limitations, including Android emulators and hardware acceleration. Treat Linux support as a useful capability to check against your specific workflow, not a guarantee that every desktop development tool will work.

When an Android tablet and keyboard make sense
Consider a tablet if you mainly use Android apps and value a light, touch-friendly device for browsing, communication, media, notes, or lighter document tasks. A keyboard can make typing more comfortable, but it does not turn every tablet into a full laptop replacement. Samsung’s laptop-versus-tablet guide notes that some mobile apps may have less functionality than full laptop programs.
Account for the whole setup
Compare the tablet’s total price with the cost of the keyboard, case or stand, and any connection accessories you need. Samsung states that its Book Cover Keyboard is sold separately. Compatibility depends on the tablet model, so confirm it before buying.

Check DeX and app compatibility rather than assuming
Selected Samsung Galaxy tablets support DeX, a desktop-like interface with multiple windows and interactions such as drag-and-drop and right-click. It is not a feature of every Android tablet, and Samsung warns that some apps may not run or may require a separate license. For DeX display setups, compatible-device support and accessories matter; Samsung says USB-C-to-HDMI cables and other accessories are sold separately. See Samsung’s DeX feature and compatibility information.
Before choosing a tablet for a particular job, check whether its essential apps support the file handling, multiple windows, external display, keyboard shortcuts, and browser or desktop-version features you need. Platform features alone cannot establish how a specific app will behave for your workflow.

When to choose a Windows 2-in-1
A Windows convertible is the stronger fit if you need desktop applications, established PC workflows, or broad compatibility with conventional laptop software, while still wanting a device that folds or detaches for tablet use. Microsoft describes Windows 2-in-1s as part laptop and part tablet and documents Snap Layouts for arranging apps side by side. Its Windows 2-in-1 product page shows a Surface Pro listing, but that example does not establish the typical or lowest price of the category. Compare current local models and configurations.

- List the programs you rely on. Identify whether each is available as a web app, Android app, or full desktop program, and whether that version has the functions you need.
- Compare total setup cost. Include a tablet keyboard, case or stand, and any required display adapters—not just the tablet itself.
- Check the physical fit. Compare screen size, weight, keyboard and trackpad, and ports against how and where you plan to work.
- Verify Chromebook support. Look up the exact model’s update date, and understand the Android app trade-off before opting into extended updates on an eligible older device.
- Confirm external-display support. Check compatibility for the precise device and any accessories required, particularly for a Samsung DeX setup.
