PRoot-Distro runs image software inside a Linux userland without a Docker daemon; it is useful for compatible applications and simpler image builds, not a substitute for Docker’s kernel-backed isolation. If you need a real Docker daemon or its normal container features, use a Linux host—locally or remotely—and use the phone as a client if desired.
What “Docker with Termux” can mean
There are two different goals behind this phrase:
- Use software packaged as Docker/OCI images on the phone: Termux’s PRoot-Distro can install and run compatible images without root or a Docker daemon. It can also build OCI images, with important differences from Docker Engine and BuildKit. See the PRoot-Distro documentation.
- Run Docker Engine itself on Android: the documented PRoot-Distro workflow does not do this. For a real daemon and ordinary container isolation, use a suitable Linux host.
This distinction matters because Termux is an Android app environment. Its programs use Android’s host kernel and Android’s Bionic libraries; it is not a Linux virtual machine by default. Some Linux distribution programs need porting or a separate userland approach to run there. Termux explains its execution environment here.

Run a Linux distribution in Termux with PRoot-Distro
For an interactive Linux userland on a typical non-root device, install Termux from F-Droid or the Termux GitHub releases, then install PRoot-Distro from Termux. The current project README uses Ubuntu 24.04 as an example:

Install PRoot-Distro:
pkg install proot-distroThis package installs

Check which Ubuntu images are available:
proot-distro search ubuntu -
Install the example Ubuntu release:
proot-distro install ubuntu:24.04 -
Enter the installed userland:
proot-distro login ubuntu

Install and run an OCI image instead
PRoot-Distro also documents a separate workflow for Docker/OCI images. Its install command can pull an image from a registry or extract an archive; run starts the image’s recorded entrypoint and command when the manifest contains them. These are PRoot-Distro capabilities, not Docker Engine commands or a promise of full Docker compatibility.

proot-distro install IMAGE
proot-distro run CONTAINERReplace IMAGE and CONTAINER with the image and installed container names appropriate to your setup. The README documents additional controls:
- Use
--detachto background a process. - Use
proot-distro psto check processes managed by the tool. - Use
proot-distro killto stop one. - Use
--redirect-portsto redirect ports.
Confirm the exact syntax in the installed version’s help output. An image may still fail if it expects a different CPU architecture, kernel feature, service supervisor, or runtime behavior. Check the image’s architecture and service requirements before relying on it.

What PRoot-Distro does—and does not—provide
PRoot-Distro describes its image workflow as working “without root, without a kernel module, and without a Docker daemon.” That is why it can be useful on a phone without turning the phone into a standard Docker server. It is also why it should not be treated as equivalent to Docker Engine.
For Dockerfile builds, the README says RUN steps execute under PRoot rather than BuildKit. Those steps lack PID, network, and IPC isolation, cgroups, and seccomp. BuildKit-only Dockerfile features such as RUN --mount, RUN --network, and RUN --security are rejected. The documentation also notes limitations involving zstd-compressed image layers, private registry credentials, single-architecture image pushes, and service supervisors. Review the PRoot-Distro README if your image depends on any of these.

These limits do not mean that no server process can run: the project supports detached entrypoints and gives examples of server software. They do mean that process execution should not be confused with Docker’s usual isolation and service-management environment.
Why the Termux Docker image is not a Docker installer
The separate termux-docker project packages a Termux environment as a Docker image. It expects an already configured Docker or Podman system to run that image, so it is not a recipe for installing a native Docker daemon inside ordinary Termux. Its architecture notes also describe QEMU/binfmt setup and possible seccomp or personality() constraints for incompatible architectures.

Likewise, Podman’s official installation instructions do not establish Android/Termux as a supported install target. That does not prove every experimental workaround is impossible; it means the official installation page does not document ordinary Termux as a supported environment.
Choose the approach that matches the job

If you choose a remote host, Termux can remain the phone-side environment for administration while Docker runs on Linux elsewhere. Evaluate the host’s Docker support, network access, security configuration, cost, and persistence on their own merits; no particular provider is required by this setup.
