Usually, you buy permission to access digital content—not unrestricted ownership of a copy. A storefront payment generally does not transfer the copyright, guarantee a transferable file, or promise that the title will remain downloadable forever. The exact result depends on the service agreement, the title’s own restrictions, and the consumer law that applies where you live.
Prime Video, Apple Media Services, and Steam illustrate the distinction. Their published terms describe licenses, device and copying rules, or possible loss of access rather than the kind of permanent control people normally associate with a disc, cartridge, or book.

What “owning” a digital purchase can mean
People use own to describe several different rights. Separating them makes the checkout wording easier to understand.

Owning the copyright
Copyright belongs to the creator or rights holder unless it is assigned under a separate legal agreement. Buying a film, album, or game for personal use does not make you the copyright owner. You cannot normally reproduce it for others, sell copies, publicly perform it, or authorize adaptations simply because you paid a store.

Owning a particular copy
With a physical disc, the law commonly treats the disc as an item you possess and can usually resell, lend, or give away, subject to local rules. A digital transaction may not give you a standalone file that can be handed to another person. The file may be encrypted, tied to an account, or usable only through an approved application.
Having a contractual license
A license is permission to access or use content under specified conditions. It can limit who may use the content, on which devices, for how long, and whether copying or transfer is allowed. The word “buy” on a button does not by itself tell you whether the transaction is a sale of a transferable copy or a license to use a service.
What the major platform terms actually say
The following examples are evidence of how particular agreements are written. They are not a universal rule for every store or every country.

Why a “purchase” can still depend on the service
Digital stores often deliver access through an account rather than an independent object. The account identifies you, the application checks your entitlement, and technical protection may control playback or installation. If any part of that chain changes, your practical ability to use the title can change even though the payment already happened.

Distribution rights can expire or change
A store may have permission from a studio, label, publisher, or other provider only for a defined period or territory. Apple’s terms expressly identify loss of the provider’s right as a reason content might become unavailable for additional download or access. That is a warning about a possible dependency, not proof that every title will be removed.
Access can be narrower than possession
Prime Video’s quoted grant is limited, personal, private, non-transferable, and non-sublicensable. Those words matter: they describe permission for your use, not an entitlement to give the title to someone else or create a new license for them. A service can also distinguish between a rental viewing period and a purchase listing, so read the title-specific usage rules rather than relying on the button label.
Separate terms may apply to a particular game or title
Steam notes that an individual subscription may carry extra conditions, including a game’s end-user license agreement. A general store agreement therefore may not contain every rule affecting multiplayer access, account use, modding, or other features.

Downloadable does not automatically mean permanent or transferable
A download gives you data on a device; it does not, by itself, prove that you have an unrestricted copy. The downloaded material may remain encrypted, require periodic account checks, work only in an approved app, or be subject to a limit on compatible devices.

Apple’s DRM-free provision is a useful example of the distinction. Where content is actually DRM-free, Apple says it can be used on a reasonable number of compatible devices you own or control. That is a narrower permission than “any device, forever, and transferable to another person.” It also does not make a blanket statement that every film, song, or other item sold through Apple is DRM-free.
Before assuming a download protects you from future changes, check whether the terms specify:
- an unencrypted file format that another player can use;
- an account or application required for playback or installation;
- the number and type of devices allowed;
- offline-use or reauthentication limits;
- regional restrictions; and
- whether copying, resale, lending, or transfer is permitted.
What you can and cannot generally do with a licensed purchase
The answer is title- and jurisdiction-specific, but these practical distinctions are a reliable starting point:

How to check a digital purchase before paying
Use the following process when the ability to keep, move, or use a title independently matters to you.

- Open the current agreement. Use the store’s terms of use or subscriber agreement, not only the short product description. Record the date shown on the page; Prime Video’s cited terms, for example, display August 26, 2026 as their update date.
- Find the operative verb. Look for “license,” “subscription,” “rental,” “purchase,” “access,” or “viewing period.” A license or subscription indicates that the contract, rather than the checkout label alone, defines your rights.
- Search for transfer language. Check “transfer,” “sublicense,” “resell,” “lend,” and “assign.” Prime Video’s example expressly uses “non-transferable” and “non-sublicensable.”
- Check download and device rules. Confirm whether a file is DRM-free, how many compatible devices are permitted, whether offline use is time-limited, and whether an account check is required.
- Read removal and availability clauses. Look for language about losing distribution rights, withdrawing content, delisting, or ending a subscription. Apple’s terms specifically warn that a provider-rights change can affect future download or access.
- Open title-specific terms. For games, look for a separate end-user license agreement or subscription condition. Steam says individual subscriptions can have additional terms.
- Save proof of the transaction. Keep the receipt, order number, title, edition, and the agreement version or date. This will not create rights the contract does not grant, but it documents what you purchased and which terms were presented.
- Check your local rules. Mandatory consumer protections, digital-content guarantees, exhaustion rules, and contract limits vary by country and sometimes by state or province. A platform agreement is not a complete statement of your legal rights.
What to do if a title disappears or stops working
Confirm whether the problem is account-related
Sign in to the purchasing account, check the order history, and verify that you are using the same regional store and application. A missing library entry can be an authentication or entitlement error rather than a rights withdrawal.
Check the title’s current listing and the service notice
Look for a delisting notice, a changed edition, a regional restriction, or a requirement to reinstall through the store. Do not assume that a replacement edition carries the same license or saved progress.
Use permitted offline or downloaded access
If the service expressly allows downloads or offline playback, follow those rules and any reauthentication schedule. Do not bypass encryption or other technical protections; the platform agreements cited above restrict circumvention.

Request a remedy through the store and then local channels
Use the store’s support process with your receipt and the relevant terms. If the response conflicts with mandatory consumer protections where you live, consult an appropriate consumer-protection agency or qualified lawyer. The outcome depends on the governing jurisdiction and facts; the platform contract alone cannot resolve that question.
How ownership differs by medium
Movies and television
Video purchases are commonly tied to a viewing service, account, and rights obtained from multiple studios or distributors. Prime Video’s limited license and Apple’s removal clause show two different ways the service relationship can affect access.
Music
Music may be offered as a download, a stream, or both. A DRM-free download can provide more practical flexibility than a stream, but Apple’s terms still distinguish device use from unrestricted ownership and do not promise permanent availability for every item.
Games
Games often involve a store account, launcher, updates, servers, and a separate end-user license. Steam’s statement that a license confers no title or ownership makes clear why paying for a game is not the same as acquiring copyright or an unconditional right to run every component forever.
The legal bottom line
A digital purchase normally gives you a bundle of contractual permissions, not the broad control associated with owning a physical object. The three examples here establish that Prime Video uses a limited, non-transferable license; Apple permits DRM-free content on a reasonable number of compatible devices while warning that rights changes can remove access; and Steam says its license creates no title or ownership in the content and services.
Those clauses do not settle every dispute. Consumer law is jurisdiction-specific, and mandatory rules may supplement or limit a contract. Treat “buy” as a prompt to inspect the actual license, download and transfer rules, account dependence, and availability language before assuming you possess a permanent, portable copy.
