1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a Kindle, Amazon’s documented setup requires an Amazon account and an internet connection, usually Wi-Fi. But there is no single rule for every e-reader: Kobo also requires an account, and offers a computer-based setup option for some devices and regions. After books are downloaded, you do not need Wi-Fi for every reading session.
What Kindle setup requires
Amazon’s 2026 Kindle setup instructions list an Amazon account and an internet connection as basic requirements. The setup process connects the Kindle to Wi-Fi and registers it to the Amazon account. See Amazon’s Kindle setup instructions for the steps and guidance for your device.

That means an Amazon account is part of the documented Kindle setup—not a universal requirement for all e-readers. The sources reviewed do not establish a general account-free or internet-free Kindle setup route, so check the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming registration can be skipped.
Do you need Wi-Fi after setup?
Not for every reading session. Amazon says an internet connection is needed to purchase, download, or sync books. In practical terms, a book already downloaded to the Kindle can be read without staying connected; connecting again is needed for those online library tasks. The guidance does not promise offline access for every title or feature.

Kobo likewise uses Wi-Fi for ongoing library tasks: syncing can download recent purchases and update software, bookmarks, and annotations. Reading a book already stored on the device is distinct from those connected tasks. Kobo’s Wi-Fi sync guide describes what syncing does.

Options if you do not have home Wi-Fi
For a Kindle
Amazon’s network guidance notes that selected Kindle models have cellular connectivity, but this is not available on every model. A phone hotspot may also provide internet access if your phone plan and device support it. Some public Wi-Fi networks require a separate sign-in before the Kindle can connect, so access may not be as straightforward as joining a home network. Check Amazon’s Kindle connectivity guidance and your model’s specifications.

If your Kobo model and location are eligible, you may be able to complete setup using a computer rather than connecting the e-reader itself to Wi-Fi. This is not an entirely offline option: the computer needs internet access, and you still need a Kobo account. Kobo’s computer setup instructions identify model and regional limits, including Kobo Desktop’s unavailability in Europe and incompatibility with certain newer models.
