Usually, no. You can watch most game adaptations without playing the source game first. The right order depends on what the adaptation is trying to do: a close, linear retelling rewards prior play with context and scene-by-scene comparisons, while a new story in an established world is normally built to welcome newcomers. Your spoiler tolerance and whether you want the game as a companion before or after viewing matter just as much.

The short answer: identify the adaptation before choosing an order

“Game adaptation” covers several very different designs. A film or series may reproduce one fixed campaign, tell an original story using the game’s setting, or borrow the game’s characters and tone while translating the experience of play into a different medium. Those choices determine whether prior game knowledge helps.

If the screen version follows one game’s central plot in a relatively direct line, playing first is the best option for viewers who enjoy noticing changes, omissions and reinterpretations. If it introduces new protagonists in a familiar universe, watching first usually gives players and non-players the same starting point. If it is written as a self-contained story with references for fans, either order works.

There is no universal rule that playing first improves enjoyment. The available evidence supports a conditional answer, not a single ranking for every franchise.

Three adaptation types and the order each favors

1. Direct, linear retelling: play first if comparison matters

A direct adaptation takes a game’s principal storyline, characters and major turning points and reshapes them for a fixed screen runtime. Because the game already supplies a complete narrative route, prior play lets you recognize why a scene was shortened, moved, combined or removed. You also know the original character arcs and can judge whether the adaptation preserves their emotional logic.

The Last of Us is the clearest example in the supplied evidence. Sony Interactive Entertainment described the first season as adapting the entire first game. Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog studio head and co-creator and writer of the HBO series, said in 2025: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important. But if you do, and you watch the show, it will fill in certain gaps for the game.” That statement supports two conclusions at once: the series is designed to stand alone, and playing first adds context rather than functioning as a prerequisite.

Choose the game first when you want to compare performances, discover how interactive encounters became scripted scenes, or experience the original story without knowing which moments the adaptation will preserve. Choose the show first if you want the game to remain an undiscovered version of the story and would rather encounter its environments and mechanics without advance plot knowledge.

2. New story in a shared world: watch first

A shared-world adaptation uses the game’s history, rules, factions or visual language but follows characters and events that are not simply a replay of the player’s campaign. In this format, the adaptation’s central mystery is often intended for every viewer, including people who have never held the controller.

Fallout illustrates the model. Time’s analysis describes a new Los Angeles story with new characters inside the games’ continuity. That design makes the series welcoming to newcomers while preserving discoveries for players. You do not need to complete any of the games to understand the series’ immediate conflict; existing players mainly gain extra resonance from recognizing the setting’s history, references and continuity details.

For this type, watching first is generally the cleanest route. You receive the show’s information in the order its writers chose, then decide whether you want to explore the games as a prequel-like expansion, a parallel history or a world-building supplement.

3. Original, newcomer-friendly story: either order works

Some adaptations borrow names, creatures, locations or themes but build a separate plot. The game becomes a source of motifs and Easter eggs rather than a required chapter of the screenplay. In these cases, prior play changes what you notice, not whether you can follow the story.

Netflix Tudum quoted Resident Evil showrunner Andrew Dabb saying, “You don’t have to be familiar at all.” He explained that players may catch references and find the series richer, while people who never played can simply enjoy the show and play afterward. That is a useful test for any adaptation marketed to a broad audience: if its main characters, stakes and rules are explained on screen, no homework is necessary.

Use these six questions to decide your viewing order

Question If the answer is yes Best default
Does the screen version retell one game’s fixed campaign? You will recognize changes and omissions. Play first for comparison; watch first for surprise.
Does it introduce new protagonists in an established world? The plot is designed to be new to everyone. Watch first.
Is the game open-ended or strongly shaped by player choice? There may be no single sequence to reproduce. Either order; focus on the adaptation’s own story.
Does the adaptation depend on gameplay sensations? Playing can reveal what movement, scarcity or tension feel like. Play first if you want to appreciate the translation.
How sensitive are you to spoilers? Playing first may reveal the game’s major twists; watching first may reveal the adaptation’s. Start with the version whose surprises you most want to protect.
Do you want the game as a companion afterward? You can use the adaptation as an introduction. Watch first, then play while the world is fresh.

Why gameplay feel can matter more than plot fidelity

A screenplay cannot reproduce player input directly. It can, however, translate the sensations that make a game distinctive: cautious movement, limited ammunition, searching for resources, reading a dangerous space, or deciding when to take a risk. The British Film Institute argues that successful adaptations capture what playing feels like rather than merely transferring the game’s narrative beats.

The BFI feature quotes Resident Evil director Zach Cregger describing the challenge as reproducing the player’s tense movement, limited resources and attention. That perspective explains why playing first can be valuable even when the adaptation tells an original story. You understand the rhythm being translated: the pause before entering a room, the cost of an item, the way the camera hides information, or the pressure created by scarce options.

Plot knowledge alone does not supply that understanding. Conversely, you do not need to have felt every mechanic to follow a well-written film. Gameplay familiarity is an appreciation bonus, not an entry requirement, unless the adaptation explicitly assumes knowledge that the screen version fails to explain.

The Last of Us: when playing first is especially rewarding

The first season of The Last of Us is a useful case for viewers deciding between a close adaptation and a first encounter. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s description that the season adapts the entire first game places it on the direct-retelling side of the spectrum. The show can be watched independently, as Druckmann’s 2025 comment makes clear, but the game provides a detailed baseline for comparison.

Play first if you want to notice adaptation choices

  • Compare how the game’s interactive journeys become a fixed sequence of scenes.
  • Notice which encounters are condensed, combined or replaced to fit television pacing.
  • Track how character relationships are communicated when the viewer is no longer controlling a protagonist.
  • Recognize visual and thematic callbacks that carry more weight when you remember the original spaces.

The strongest reason to play first here is not basic comprehension. It is the pleasure of seeing a familiar story re-authored for another medium.

Watch first if you want an unspoiled game

If you prefer to discover the game’s plot, locations and set pieces through play, the series can serve as an introduction. You will know some broad story information afterward, but the game still differs in pacing, exploration and agency. Watching first does not make the later game identical to the show; it changes which surprises remain.

Fallout: why newcomers and players can start together

Fallout demonstrates the shared-world model rather than a scene-for-scene recreation of one title. Time’s account emphasizes new characters and a new Los Angeles story within the games’ continuity. That structure gives the series room to explain its own rules while rewarding players who recognize locations, institutions, historical references and the franchise’s distinctive tone.

If you have never played, begin with the series and follow its central characters without pausing to study the game timeline. If you are a player, you do not need to replay a particular installment first; your prior knowledge is mainly useful for spotting connections. After viewing, choose a game based on whether you want more exploration, role-playing choice or a different regional history, not because the series requires a missing chapter.

Resident Evil: familiarity adds layers, not eligibility

Dabb’s statement to Netflix Tudum makes the intended audience explicit: “You don’t have to be familiar at all.” The series can therefore be judged on its own characters, conflicts and pacing. Players may identify Easter eggs, recognize recurring ideas or interpret a reference differently, but those details are optional enrichment.

This is a good pattern for adaptations that remix a long-running game mythology. A franchise may contain several timelines, protagonists and versions of the same event. Trying to complete every game before watching can create unnecessary work and still leave you unsure which continuity the adaptation uses. Start with the screen story unless you specifically want the games’ mechanics and history first.

Does playing first spoil the movie?

It can spoil the game’s plot for you, and watching first can spoil the adaptation’s major reveals. Neither order is universally safer because the two versions may reveal information at different times or change the identity of a twist.

Use a personal spoiler hierarchy:

  1. Protect the version you are most excited to discover. If the game is the experience you have been saving, play it first. If the series is your priority, watch it before opening a wiki or starting the game.
  2. Separate plot spoilers from experience spoilers. Knowing a destination does not reveal how exploration, combat, sound design or performance will feel in the other medium.
  3. Avoid assuming a shared title means identical events. Even a close adaptation may change chronology, character emphasis or outcomes.

The cited evidence supports this trade-off but does not establish a universal spoiler rule. Your own tolerance is the deciding factor.

What to do if you have not played the game

You normally need no preparation beyond starting the film or series. Do not read a plot summary “just in case”; it can remove the very surprises the adaptation is built to provide. Instead, use the opening episodes or first act to learn the world’s terminology and relationships.

If the adaptation launches into unfamiliar lore, keep a short, spoiler-free note of names and factions introduced on screen. Look up only definitions that the story has already explained. Avoid game wikis, walkthroughs and ending discussions until you finish, because they often reveal information from multiple installments and continuities.

After viewing, play the source game if you want deeper world-building, a different pace, environmental storytelling or direct control of the protagonist. For a direct retelling such as The Last of Us, expect the game to revisit familiar story territory while adding interactive sequences and details. For a shared-world series such as Fallout, expect a related setting rather than a playable version of the television plot.

What to do if you plan to play first

Choose the specific game that the adaptation draws on, not automatically the newest release. Confirm whether the screen version follows one installment or uses the broader franchise. If it is a long game, you do not need to complete every side quest to understand the main narrative; stop when the story has delivered the material you want to compare.

Play without constantly checking adaptation guides. Make your own observations about characters, pacing and mechanics, then watch the screen version on its own terms. A direct adaptation may omit content for structural reasons, while a gameplay-focused adaptation may preserve tension or resource pressure without reproducing exact missions.

For readers who want the direct source of The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part I on PS5 is the named game associated with the official adaptation discussion. The show remains explicitly designed to be enjoyable without prior play, so the game is an optional companion rather than a requirement.

What commercial performance can—and cannot—tell you

Large audiences do not prove that viewers played the games first. The Associated Press, citing Comscore, reported a $146 million opening weekend for The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. The three Sonic films opened between $58 million and $72 million each from 2020 through 2024, and Five Nights at Freddy’s opened to more than $80 million in 2023. Those figures show that game adaptations can reach broad audiences; they do not establish a causal link between prior game knowledge and enjoyment.

Audience size is therefore a poor guide to your viewing order. Adaptation design, spoiler preference and the kind of experience you want next are more useful decision criteria.

A practical decision procedure

  1. Read the premise, not just the title. Look for whether it says “based on the events of” a particular game or introduces a new story in the same universe.
  2. Classify the structure. Direct and linear suggests play-first for comparison; shared-world or original suggests watch-first or either order.
  3. Choose your protected surprise. Decide whether the game’s plot or the adaptation’s plot matters more to discover unspoiled.
  4. Estimate your tolerance for optional lore. If you enjoy references and continuity puzzles, prior play adds value. If not, start with the screen story.
  5. Commit to one version without treating it as homework. You can stop after the film, stop after the game, or continue to the other medium when curiosity—not obligation—takes over.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be lost if I have never played the game?

Not in an adaptation designed for newcomers. A screen story that introduces its own protagonists, stakes and rules should be understandable without a controller. Shared-world and original-story formats are especially likely to provide that foundation.

Should I play every game in a franchise first?

No. First determine which installment, if any, the adaptation directly retells. A large franchise may contain separate continuities, and completing unrelated entries can add time without improving comprehension.

Can I watch a game adaptation with someone who played it when I did not?

Yes. You may notice different details, but a well-structured adaptation gives non-players the necessary information on screen. Agree on spoiler boundaries before discussing game-specific twists.

Is a faithful adaptation automatically better for players?

No. Fidelity can make comparisons satisfying, but an adaptation also has to work as a fixed audiovisual story. Preserving the feeling of movement, scarcity or attention may matter more than copying every mission or line of dialogue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to watch the adaptation before playing if I dislike spoilers?

Choose the version whose surprises you most want to protect. Playing first reveals the game’s plot; watching first may reveal the adaptation’s changes and major beats.

Do I need a plot summary before starting an adaptation?

Usually not. Start with the film or series itself and avoid wikis or ending discussions until you finish.

What if the adaptation uses several games instead of one?

Check whether it is a direct retelling or a new story in the shared universe. Only the former normally benefits from playing a specific source game first.
