Kojima Productions describes PHYSINT as its third original intellectual property, and no earlier game has been announced as a prerequisite.
Play older Metal Gear games only if you want background on Kojima’s stealth design, cinematic storytelling and recurring espionage themes. For one optional introduction, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is the most practical choice because it begins the saga chronologically and includes a control style designed to help newcomers.

What PHYSINT is, and what has actually been announced
PHYSINT is a new spy game from Kojima Productions. The studio’s September 17, 2026 announcement identifies it as the company’s third original IP and describes it as a culmination of Hideo Kojima’s 40-year career. Bill Skarsgård is confirmed as the lead.

His description is: “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action.” That is a statement about design ambition, not evidence that PHYSINT shares the Metal Gear universe or its continuity.

The announcement does not provide a release date, a complete plot, a detailed explanation of its systems or a list of required earlier games. Until those details are published, treating any Metal Gear title as compulsory would go beyond the confirmed information.
Is PHYSINT a new Metal Gear game?
Not according to the information currently available. Kojima Productions presents PHYSINT as an original IP rather than an announced numbered Metal Gear sequel, remake or spin-off. The project’s espionage premise creates an obvious point of comparison, but a spy setting alone does not establish shared characters, chronology or canon.
That distinction matters for newcomers. A direct Metal Gear sequel could reasonably assume knowledge of earlier events; an original IP has no such built-in obligation. PHYSINT may eventually reveal references or design links, but no official announcement has said that understanding Metal Gear lore is necessary to follow its story.

There is no announced continuity requirement
The practical question is whether PHYSINT requires knowledge of a previous story. Nothing announced so far says that it does. The project is being positioned as a fresh spy experience with new ideas, so a first-time player should be able to learn its characters, rules and terminology from the game itself.

A useful precedent for newcomers
PlayStation’s official FAQ for METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER answers the related question directly: “No. Although METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is a remake of 2004’s METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER, chronologically the story takes place at the very start of the Metal Gear Saga, making it a perfect starting point.”
That FAQ concerns Delta, not PHYSINT, so it cannot prove how PHYSINT’s final story will work. It does establish a sensible way to approach Kojima’s espionage games: beginners do not have to complete a decades-long back catalogue before they can understand an entry designed as a starting point. The same logic makes older games useful preparation, not a gatekeeping test, for PHYSINT.
PHYSINT may deliberately differ from Metal Gear
Older games can teach you how Kojima has used stealth, surveillance, disguises, codec-style exposition, political fiction and long cinematic scenes. They cannot tell you exactly how PHYSINT will play. Kojima has specifically promised a different kind of spy action, so assuming that its controls, mission structure or tone will duplicate Metal Gear could create the wrong expectations.
What playing Metal Gear can add
Optional does not mean pointless. A previous game can give you vocabulary for discussing PHYSINT and make it easier to recognize the design traditions Kojima is drawing from.

- ERA: THE 1960'S BATTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Relive history as the Cold War and geo-political landscape change
- GAMEPLAY: SURVIVAL BATTLE OF INSTINCTS: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries
- SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators
- Stealth context: You can see how earlier games handled visibility, sound, patrol routes, alert states and non-lethal approaches.
- Espionage themes: The series offers examples of double agents, intelligence agencies, proxy conflicts, deterrence and the personal cost of political systems.
- Cinematic presentation: Kojima’s preference for lengthy scenes, unusual framing and game-to-film transitions is easier to appreciate when you have seen it evolve.
- Design lineage: A prior title lets you distinguish what PHYSINT keeps, changes or rejects rather than treating every idea as unprecedented.
- Character and terminology familiarity: If PHYSINT eventually includes recognizable concepts, earlier exposure could make references easier to spot, although no such requirement has been announced.
These are benefits for curiosity and comparison. They are not evidence that you must know the older stories to follow PHYSINT.
The best single game to play first
Why Delta is the strongest optional primer
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a full enhanced remake of the 2004 game METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER. Its story takes place at the chronological beginning of the Metal Gear saga, which removes the need to learn earlier plot developments first.
Delta also includes an optional modern control style aimed at people experiencing the series for the first time. That gives a newcomer a way to sample the series without committing to older control conventions before deciding whether the broader catalogue is appealing.

What Delta can and cannot prepare you for
Delta can demonstrate the series’ approach to stealth, military fiction and cinematic storytelling. It can also provide historical context for why Metal Gear is influential. It cannot guarantee that PHYSINT will use the same camera, inventory, alert system, pacing or mission design. Treat it as a representative sample of Kojima’s past work, not a tutorial for an unreleased game.
Choosing between the main preparation options
| Option | What you get | Continuity value | Controls and accessibility | Commitment | Role before PHYSINT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play Delta alone | An enhanced remake of METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER | Starts at the saga’s chronological beginning | Optional modern control style for newcomers | One complete game | Best all-purpose primer, but not required |
| Master Collection Vol. 1 | Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater | Shows the series across three major entries rather than only its earliest chronology | Specific newcomer-oriented control feature not stated in the supplied official details | Three games | Useful historical sample for players who want broader context |
| Complete franchise playthrough | The wider Metal Gear catalogue, including games beyond the three-game collection | Maximum exposure to recurring characters, politics and design changes | Varies by title and original platform | Large multi-game commitment | Unnecessary for the question PHYSINT currently raises |
| Skip the back catalogue | Start PHYSINT when its release information and explanations are available | No prior Metal Gear continuity | Learn PHYSINT’s own systems from its tutorial and story | No preparation time | Fully reasonable for a newcomer |
The table’s commitment labels are relative rather than hour estimates: no official PHYSINT playtime or required preparation length has been announced, and a full-franchise total would vary substantially by which releases you include.

If you only want to understand PHYSINT
Skip Metal Gear unless you are personally interested. Follow PHYSINT’s own introduction when more information arrives. This avoids spending time on material that the new game may not use.
If you want one representative Kojima spy game
Choose Delta. It combines a modernized presentation with the saga’s earliest chronology, so you get a coherent story without first learning a later sequel’s assumptions.

If you want historical context
Use METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1. Its official lineup is Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Playing all three shows how the series’ political themes and systems developed, but the collection is a study of history rather than a PHYSINT requirement.
If you are a completionist
A full playthrough can be rewarding for its own sake, especially if you want to trace recurring ideas and characters. Set that expectation honestly: you are choosing a substantial series project, not completing assigned homework for PHYSINT.
How to avoid the most common newcomer mistake
Do not use Metal Gear lore as a test of whether you are qualified to play a new spy game. Start with the title that matches your interest, and stop when the experience has answered your question.
- Decide whether your goal is context or preparation. Context justifies an older game; preparation is not currently required.
- If you choose one game, start with Delta. Its chronological position and optional modern controls reduce the usual entry barriers.
- Judge PHYSINT on its own announced identity. Look for its confirmed systems, story setup and accessibility information rather than assuming Metal Gear mechanics will carry over.
- Expand only if you enjoy the lineage. Move to the three-game collection or a larger catalogue because you want more Kojima history, not because an official prerequisite has appeared.
What the series’ popularity does—and does not—mean
The Metal Gear series has sold more than 60 million copies, according to Konami Holdings Corporation’s 2024 figure. That scale explains why many readers associate any Kojima spy project with Metal Gear, but popularity is not continuity. A large existing audience does not turn an original IP into a sequel, and it does not impose a viewing order on new players.
The practical answer for your backlog
There is no announced requirement to play older Metal Gear games before PHYSINT. Play nothing if you are interested only in the new project; play Delta if you want one accessible example of Kojima’s earlier espionage design; choose Master Collection Vol. 1 if you want a three-game historical sample; and reserve a complete franchise run for genuine curiosity. PHYSINT’s confirmed status as an original IP and its promise of a different kind of spy action leave that choice with you.
