Do You Need to Play Cyberpunk 2077 Before Watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?

No. You can understand and enjoy Cyberpunk: Edgerunners without playing Cyberpunk 2077. Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED present the anime as a standalone, 10-episode story set in the same universe as the game. Playing first is optional: it adds familiarity with Night City, cyberware, corporations and slang, but it is not required to follow the characters or plot.

What “standalone” means for Edgerunners

Netflix’s Media Center describes the series as “a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future.” CD PROJEKT RED used the same basic framing in its 2020 announcement, calling Edgerunners “an all new original anime series set in the same universe as the upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077.” The company’s official Cyberpunk page also labels it a standalone 10-episode Netflix anime created with Studio Trigger.

In practical terms, the show introduces its own situation, characters and stakes on screen. You are not expected to know the game’s mission order, protagonist, endings, skill system or terminology before episode one. Any information needed to understand the anime’s story is supplied by the anime itself.

“Standalone” does not mean unrelated. The series and game share the fictional setting of Night City and its wider cyberpunk world. They draw on the same ideas about body modification, advanced technology, private power and street-level survival. Those connections create continuity and recognizable details, but they do not turn the game into prerequisite reading.

What playing Cyberpunk 2077 adds

More familiarity with Night City

Players already know Night City as an explorable place rather than only a backdrop. Recognizing districts, buildings, transportation, advertisements or visual motifs can make a scene feel like a return visit. A first-time viewer can still understand what a location means in the anime because the scene establishes its immediate purpose; the game mainly supplies extra recognition.

A larger vocabulary for cyberware and technology

The game gives you hands-on exposure to cyberware, weapons, interfaces and the social consequences of replacing parts of the body with machines. That background can make the anime’s visual language feel instantly familiar. It is enrichment, not a required technical lesson: the show explains the abilities and risks that matter to each scene.

Recognition of factions and slang

Game players may notice corporations, gangs, street terminology and recurring concepts sooner than newcomers. These references reward familiarity with the setting, but they are not tests. If a name or expression is unfamiliar, the anime’s dialogue, action and context generally make its role clear enough to continue.

Easter-egg value

The shared universe allows small visual or verbal callbacks to register as easter eggs for people who have played. Their value is cumulative: they deepen the feeling that both works occupy the same world. They do not carry the central plot, and missing them should not leave a first-time viewer confused about the main cast.

Is Edgerunners a direct adaptation of the game?

No. CD PROJEKT RED calls it an original anime series in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and the official descriptions emphasize a standalone story. It is better understood as a separate narrative using the same setting than as a screen version of the game’s campaign.

That distinction explains why the anime can work for viewers who have never held the game. You do not need to know the game’s playable character or make its choices to understand the anime’s protagonists. Conversely, finishing the game will not tell you exactly what happens in the series, because the anime follows its own characters and dramatic arc.

Should you watch first or play first?

Neither order blocks comprehension. Choose based on whether you want an independent introduction or a more familiar setting before you watch.

Watch Edgerunners, then play The anime supplies a complete introduction to its own story, and the game becomes an optional, interactive return to Night City. You will encounter the game’s world without having its vocabulary beforehand, although the anime does not require that vocabulary. Viewers who want the shortest path to the anime and a clean, self-contained first impression.
Play Cyberpunk 2077, then watch You bring more familiarity with Night City, cyberware concepts, corporations, gangs, slang and visual details. The game is a much larger commitment than a 10-episode series, and familiarity does not replace the anime’s own introductions. Players who prefer to learn a setting interactively or want to spot more connections immediately.
Watch without playing Full access to the anime’s central plot and characters without buying or completing a role-playing game. Some references may pass without the extra recognition a player would have. Anyone deciding whether the show itself is worth their time.

The most straightforward recommendation for a newcomer whose immediate goal is the adaptation is to watch Edgerunners first. If it makes you want a longer visit to Night City, play Cyberpunk 2077 afterward. Starting with the game is equally valid if interactive exploration is how you prefer to enter a fictional world.

Does Edgerunners spoil Cyberpunk 2077?

The two works share a universe, so a player may recognize locations, concepts or other world details while watching. That is different from the anime being a retelling of the game’s campaign. The official standalone positioning supports treating the anime as its own story rather than as required preparation for, or a substitute for, the game.

There is no official statistic establishing how many viewers watched without playing first, and there is no universal spoiler rule that applies to every player. If avoiding any shared-world discovery matters to you, play first. If your priority is experiencing the anime as an independent story, watch it first and accept that a common setting may contain recognizable references.

How much time and money does each starting point require?

Edgerunners is a fixed 10-episode commitment. The game is a large role-playing experience with interactive exploration, optional activities and a much broader time investment than a short series. The exact time needed to finish the game depends on how much of Night City you explore, so a viewer should not treat “play first” as a quick orientation session.

You also do not need to purchase the game simply to test whether the anime makes sense. Watching the series first lets you make that decision after you know whether its setting and tone appeal to you. Playing first makes sense when you already want the game for its interactive systems, not because the anime requires a paid tutorial.

A practical newcomer path

  1. Start the 10-episode series. The official descriptions identify it as a complete standalone story, so begin without a game account, save file or lore guide.
  2. Let unfamiliar terms be explained in context. Pay attention to what a character’s cyberware does, what a faction wants in a scene and how Night City affects the characters. You do not need to pause for every proper noun.
  3. Decide what kind of follow-up you want. Choose the game for interactive exploration and a longer stay in the setting. Choose tabletop material if you want collaborative world-building and missions rather than a digital role-playing game.
  4. Use outside explanations only for details you want to explore. A guide can identify a reference after an episode, but it is not necessary homework before watching.

What is the Edgerunners Mission Kit?

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit is an optional physical follow-up for readers who want to spend more time in the setting through tabletop play. Its product description lists an Edgerunners Handbook, a rule book, a full-length mission called “The Jacket,” pre-generated Edgerunners, maps, standees, tokens and themed dice.

It is not required homework for the anime and it does not replace the video game. The kit is a tabletop expansion: its value is in providing rules, props and a ready-to-run scenario for a group. Consider it after watching if you want to create your own stories in the same world, rather than as a prerequisite for understanding the series.

What about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2?

Netflix Tudum and CD PROJEKT RED describe Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 as another standalone story in the Cyberpunk 2077 world, with a new cast of characters. Its announced positioning likewise does not state that playing the game is a prerequisite.

Official listings have announced an October 20 premiere on Netflix. Release dates and availability can change, so check the current Netflix listing and CD PROJEKT RED announcement when you are ready to watch. The “new cast” and “standalone” descriptions mean that prior game play is not presented as required preparation for the sequel either.

Common mistakes first-time viewers can avoid

  • Waiting to finish the game. Completion is unnecessary if your goal is to understand the anime.
  • Assuming every reference is essential. Shared-world details are often flavor or easter-egg material; follow the immediate scene before looking anything up.
  • Expecting the anime to reproduce the game’s campaign. It is an original story with its own cast and structure.
  • Confusing setting familiarity with comprehension. A player may recognize more names and places, but the anime still establishes the information its plot needs.
  • Treating the Mission Kit as a viewing requirement. It is optional tabletop content, not a chapter of the anime.

Bottom line for each type of newcomer

If you have never played the game

Watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners confidently. The official 10-episode standalone format is designed to carry its own story, and you can decide later whether you want the game’s interactive version of Night City.

If you are already playing Cyberpunk 2077

You can watch whenever you like. Your familiarity may make locations, technology, factions and slang more rewarding, but there is no need to reach a particular quest or ending first.

If you are choosing an order for both works

Watch first for the most efficient, self-contained introduction; play first for maximum setting familiarity. Both routes preserve the anime’s basic comprehensibility, so preference—not a hidden prerequisite—should decide.
