Yes. An active PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play Squad online on PlayStation 5. The official PlayStation Store listing states, “PS Plus required for online play.” Sony lists online multiplayer as a benefit of the Essential, Extra and Premium plans, so Essential is the lowest documented tier that meets the requirement.
The short answer
- Online multiplayer: Yes, PlayStation Plus is required on PS5.
- Which tier: Sony documents online multiplayer for Essential, Extra and Premium; the sources do not say that Extra or Premium is required specifically.
- Platform: The current official listings reviewed are for PS5. They do not list a PS4 version.
- Player count: The main listing describes cross-platform multiplayer for up to 99 online players with PlayStation Plus.
- Release status: The broad Squad PS5 listing still gives the full release date as “to be determined.” A separate PS5 Alpha Preview is marked Free Beta with a listed date of October 16, 2026.
Those points are easy to blur together because the Store has more than one Squad entry. The Alpha Preview and the full commercial listing should be treated as separate products until the publisher gives a final release announcement.

Why PlayStation Plus is required
Sony’s PlayStation Plus support guidance says that most PS4 and PS5 games with online multiplayer require a PlayStation Plus subscription, although some games are exceptions. Squad is not presented as an exception: its official Store listing makes the requirement explicit rather than leaving it to a general policy page.
The requirement applies to the online portion of the game. It is not a statement that every screen or mode must connect to the internet. A game can contain practice, training or local features that do not use online matchmaking, while still requiring PlayStation Plus when you join online servers.

What the Store wording settles
The wording “PS Plus required for online play” answers the practical question directly. You should not expect to join public matches, use online matchmaking or play with remote players from a PS5 account that has no active PlayStation Plus membership.
What the general Sony policy does not settle
Sony’s word “most” leaves room for exceptions in other games. It does not create an exemption for Squad. The game-specific listing is the controlling information for this title, and it says a subscription is required.
Which PlayStation Plus tier do you need?

If your only reason for subscribing is to play Squad online, Essential addresses the requirement described by Sony. Extra and Premium may make sense for their other benefits, but the official material used here does not establish that Squad is included in a PlayStation Plus game catalog or that a catalog entitlement replaces buying or claiming the game. Do not choose a higher tier on the assumption that the title automatically comes with it.

Choose Extra or Premium only for the additional services you want elsewhere on your account. For the narrow question of joining Squad matches, all three tiers provide the documented online-multiplayer benefit. The requirement is the subscription level, not a special Squad-specific add-on.

PS5 listing versus the Alpha Preview
The PlayStation Store currently contains two distinct kinds of Squad entry. Their dates and descriptions should not be merged.

The full listing is not a confirmed launch date
“Release date to be determined” means the general PS5 product page does not provide a final commercial launch date. The existence of a Store page does not by itself mean the full version is available to purchase or download now.
The Alpha Preview is a separate build
The Alpha Preview is labeled Free Beta and has its own October 16, 2026 date. That date identifies the preview listing; it does not confirm that the complete game launches on the same day. The preview description also mentions a practice environment and one local player, which explains why it can advertise online play as optional. If you are trying to enter an online session in the preview, follow the access and subscription prompts shown for your PS5 account; the main Squad listing still states that PlayStation Plus is required for online play.

Can you play Squad without PlayStation Plus?
Online matches: no
Without an active PlayStation Plus subscription, you should not be able to use the online multiplayer function described by the Store listing. That includes joining the game’s online player pool and playing with people on other platforms.

Practice or local features: possibly, depending on the build
The Alpha Preview explicitly describes online play as optional, supports one local player and includes a practice environment. Those details indicate that not every activity in that preview is an online match. They do not promise that every offline feature of the full commercial game will be available, nor do they define the final game’s complete mode list. Treat offline access as build-specific rather than as a way around the online requirement.
Playing locally is different from playing online
A local-player allowance means the console can support a solo or local activity in that particular preview listing. It does not mean a second remote player can join without PlayStation Plus. The moment the activity uses online services, the Store’s PS Plus requirement applies.
What “up to 99 online players” means
The main PS5 listing advertises cross-platform multiplayer and support for up to 99 online players with PlayStation Plus. “Up to” is a ceiling for the advertised session size, not a promise that every match will contain exactly 99 people. Actual lobbies can depend on matchmaking, server availability, the selected mode and how many players are searching at the same time.
Store descriptions may also use “50 vs. 50” language to describe the game’s advertised battle format. That is a description of how a match is structured, not an independently measured market statistic. It should not be read as evidence that every session will reach a particular player count.

Cross-platform multiplayer means the PS5 version is designed to play with participants on other supported platforms. It does not remove Sony’s account-level online-multiplayer requirement. A cross-platform lobby is still an online session, so the PS Plus condition remains relevant for the PlayStation player.

- Confirm that you are using a PS5. The current official Squad entries reviewed here are PS5 listings. Do not assume that a PS4 installation or entitlement exists.
- Identify the entry you intend to use. The full listing and the Alpha Preview are separate Store pages. Check the title and the product description before downloading anything.
- Choose an eligible PlayStation Plus plan. Essential, Extra and Premium are all documented by Sony as including online multiplayer. Essential is the lowest documented tier for this purpose.
- Use the account that holds the subscription. If the console displays a subscription prompt, verify that the signed-in PS5 profile is the one with the active membership. A different family or local profile may not have the same entitlement.
- Launch the correct build and sign in to online services. Online play requires the console to be connected and the game to be using its online mode. A practice or local activity is not the same test as joining a server.
- Check the listing again if access is unavailable. Because the full release date remains to be determined, availability can differ between the commercial listing and the dated Alpha Preview.
Troubleshooting a PS Plus or multiplayer prompt
You have PlayStation Plus but still see a subscription message
- Check the membership status on the profile currently signed in to the PS5.
- Make sure you launched Squad from the same account that has the entitlement.
- Close the game, sign out and back in, then relaunch it so the console can refresh account permissions.
- Confirm that the console is online; an active subscription cannot create a connection when the PS5 is offline.
You cannot find the game you expected
Search the PS5 Store for both the full Squad page and the Alpha Preview. The full page does not provide a confirmed release date, while the preview is a separately dated Free Beta listing. Seeing the preview does not mean the full commercial version has launched.
You are looking for a PS4 version
The official Store material covered here identifies Squad for PS5. It does not establish a PS4 edition. A PS4 search result, compatibility assumption or old listing should not be treated as confirmation that the current version supports that console.

The advertised figure is “up to 99” online players. A smaller lobby is consistent with a capacity limit rather than a guaranteed headcount. Check the selected mode and matchmaking status before treating the player count as a subscription problem.
What the requirement does not tell you
- It does not confirm the full game’s final release date; the general listing still says the date is to be determined.
- It does not prove that Squad is included in any PlayStation Plus game catalog. The cited material establishes online multiplayer benefits, not catalog inclusion.
- It does not require Extra or Premium. Sony lists all three named plans as supporting online multiplayer.
- It does not turn the Alpha Preview’s October 16, 2026 date into a confirmed launch date for the full game.
Bottom line
For online Squad multiplayer on PS5, plan on having an active PlayStation Plus membership. Essential is the lowest Sony-documented tier that provides online multiplayer, while Extra and Premium also qualify. The main Store listing advertises cross-platform sessions of up to 99 online players, but the full release date remains unannounced. The October 16, 2026 date belongs to a separate Free Beta Alpha Preview, not a confirmed full-game launch.
