Yes. To play games in Nintendo’s NES Classics library on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The standard membership is enough; you do not need the more expensive Expansion Pack.
Which NES games require a membership?
The requirement applies to Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics library. Downloading its app does not buy the games permanently: Nintendo says only a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership can access a classic-game library. Yes. Nintendo Switch Online’s standard membership includes classic NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries. The Expansion Pack adds other classic libraries and benefits, but it is not needed for NES Classics. Compare the options on Nintendo’s US membership overview; availability and pricing vary by region.

How to access the NES Classics library
- On your Switch or Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that has an active membership.
- Go to Nintendo Switch Online and choose Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics.
- Select Free Download, then open the library app after installation.
Nintendo’s download instructions describe this process. Access is tied to the account: another account on the same console cannot use the library just because a different account has a membership.
Can you play offline, or after a membership ends?
You can play the classic games offline for a limited period. Nintendo requires the console to connect to the internet at least once every seven days so it can verify membership. If your membership lapses, the library becomes inaccessible until you renew. Your game save data remains on the console and can be used again if you renew.

The trial converts to a one-month auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless automatic renewal is turned off by the end of the trial. Do you need a special NES controller?
No. Nintendo’s wireless NES controller 2-pack is an optional accessory for members, not a requirement for playing the games. Buying the controllers does not provide membership or access to the library. Details are on Nintendo’s NES controller product page.
