A square-foot figure is a rough manufacturer estimate—not a guaranteed result or a universal CFM conversion. For a whole-home system, size by conditioned air volume and an appropriate air-changes-per-hour target.
What capacity means for a room air cooler
CFM means cubic feet per minute: the volume of air a cooler moves. For a portable evaporative unit, it is the most useful starting point for comparing airflow. Look at the stated room coverage too, but treat it as a manufacturer estimate that depends on conditions such as heat and humidity. Honeywell, for example, gives approximate examples of a 200-CFM spot cooler for about 50 sq. ft. and a 2,000-CFM cooler for about 500 sq. ft.; it cautions that actual performance varies with heat and humidity. Those examples do not establish a fixed square-feet-per-CFM rule. Honeywell’s air-cooler FAQ

Floor area alone also misses factors that affect the result: ceiling height, direct sun, the room’s connection to adjacent open spaces, airflow path, and local humidity. A unit can match its advertised area and still disappoint if the air is too humid or has nowhere to circulate.

How to choose a portable cooler for your room
- Measure the space. Record the room’s floor area and ceiling height. Note strong sun exposure and whether the room opens into other spaces.
- Compare CFM and stated coverage. Use the product’s airflow rating and room-area claim as an initial filter. Check that you are comparing airflow ratings on the same basis where the manufacturer explains how they are measured.
- Check climate and ventilation before buying. Direct evaporative cooling works best in dry air and adds moisture to the room. If your space is humid or cannot be cross-ventilated, a larger CFM rating will not solve the underlying mismatch.
- Then compare practical features. Consider noise, water-tank refill frequency, footprint, portability, fan speeds, maintenance access, and whether the unit is rated for indoor, outdoor, or covered-patio use. Tank capacity mainly affects how often you refill and the cooler’s physical size; it is not a measure of airflow or cooling output. Honeywell’s FAQ
How to read a square-foot claim
Use the coverage number to screen options, not to predict a precise room temperature. It is specific to a manufacturer’s product and assumptions. For instance, Honeywell’s TC30PEU page lists 700 CFM and coverage up to 426 sq. ft.; the page also identifies the model as discontinued, so it illustrates how claims are presented rather than serving as a current buying recommendation. Check whether evaporative cooling suits your climate
Evaporative cooling transfers sensible heat from air as water evaporates into it. Its potential depends on the difference between dry-bulb temperature (the ordinary air temperature) and wet-bulb temperature, which reflects humidity. When relative humidity reaches 100%, the two temperatures are equal, leaving no wet-bulb depression for evaporative cooling; a larger gap generally means more cooling potential. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Building America Solution Center guide
Honeywell says its portable evaporative coolers work best at about 60% relative humidity or lower, while De’Longhi describes them as suited to areas where humidity does not reach 50–60%. Treat these as manufacturer guidance, not a universal cutoff: local weather, design conditions, and your comfort needs matter. In persistently humid conditions, a portable air conditioner may be a more suitable option. Honeywell FAQ; De’Longhi humidity guidance

Built-in 9-color ambient lighting creates a relaxing atmosphere for bedrooms or gaming rooms. Dynamic light and mist synchronization enhances the cooling experience while adding modern style to your space.
Plan for cross-ventilation
A direct evaporative cooler adds moisture, so provide an exit path for humid air. Honeywell advises opening a window or door for cross-ventilation; its TC30PEU page likewise recommends an open door or window for indoor use. Do not assume a sealed room will cool effectively. How to size a whole-home evaporative system
Whole-home systems use a different method from portable room coolers. PNNL’s Building America Solution Center describes calculating the conditioned volume, selecting a target air changes per hour (ACH) appropriate to regional design conditions, and converting the result to airflow:
Rank #3
- 3-in-1 Evaporative Air Cooler: Use it as a fan for better air circulation, add water for extra humidity in dry spaces, or add water and 4 ice packs for cooler, fresher air. Enjoy stronger cooling than a fan with lower energy use than a portable AC
- Powerful Airflow with Upgraded Motor: This portable swamp cooler delivers up to 2000 CFM and 26 ft/s wind speed. With 80°oscillation and 120° vertical tilt, it spreads strong airflow across spaces up to 500 sq. ft. for steady, wide cooling
- Large Dual Tank for Long Cooling: With a 6.6-gallon bottom tank and refillable top tank, this air cooler provides up to 12 hours of cooling. Includes 4 ice packs for extra chill, plus a low-water alert and bottom drain for easy emptying
- Effortless Control & Custom Comfort: Adjust this air cooler with the control panel or included remote. Choose from 3 fan speeds and 2 wind modes(normal, natural) to enjoy gentle airflow, natural breeze, or stronger cooling tailored to your comfort at home
- Low Noise & 12-Hour Timer: This energy-efficient air cooler runs at just 60 dB and uses only 80W, making it ideal for living rooms, offices, or study spaces. The 12-hour timer supports auto shutoff for quiet, uninterrupted comfort
Required CFM = (conditioned volume in cubic feet × target ACH) ÷ 60
- Calculate conditioned volume: floor area in square feet × average ceiling height in feet.
- Choose a target ACH based on location and outdoor conditions. PNNL says manufacturers commonly suggest approximately 20–40 ACH for evaporative cooling.
- Multiply the volume by the target ACH, then divide by 60 to get CFM.
PNNL’s example for a 2,000-sq.-ft. home with 8-ft. ceilings near Salt Lake City uses 20 ACH: (2,000 × 8 × 20) ÷ 60 = 5,333 CFM. This is a whole-home system example, not a portable-room-cooler chart. PNNL notes that sizing is not exact, and the appropriate ACH depends on location and outdoor conditions. PNNL Building America Solution Center
