When are ice cleats useful?
The decision depends on the surface, not simply the fact that you are in Iceland or visiting in winter. Dry, clear city streets and attraction paths do not automatically call for cleats. Packed snow or ice on a walking path is a reason to consider removable traction.

Iceland Travel says crampons are “not always necessary,” but can add security and confidence when walking on icy areas. That is general winter clothing advice, not a guarantee about the conditions on a particular route.
Match the gear to the walk

Why glacier walks need different equipment
A glacier is not just another icy path. Iceland’s Environment Agency warns that walking on glacier tongues without crampons and other ice-climbing equipment is dangerous, and recommends organized trips with experienced guides. Do not take ordinary microspikes or walking cleats onto a glacier as a replacement for technical gear.

Equipment arrangements vary by operator and activity. For example, IceTrek’s 2026 Laugavegur itinerary lists waterproof hiking boots for trekking and says technical glacier-day equipment, including crampons, is provided. Confirm what your own tour includes and what you must bring.
How to check conditions before heading out
Season is not a live trail report. Paths, weather, and access can change, so check current information for the exact area rather than assuming that a route is safe or icy based on the month.

- Check SafeTravel Iceland’s alerts and hiking information, and review the Icelandic weather forecast.
- For destinations where road access matters, check road status and local destination or ranger advice. Vatnajökull National Park’s winter recommendations, including its advice to use crampons in winter conditions, apply to that park—not automatically to every route in Iceland.
- SafeTravel recommends checking the weather every day, even twice a day, and planning hikes around your experience, equipment, and route.
- Follow signs and closures. Turn back if conditions exceed your group’s ability.
Buy cleats before you go or wait?
For a short sightseeing trip, the sensible choice depends on whether icy ordinary walking paths are likely on your planned outings and whether you expect to use the cleats again. If you already own removable traction that fits your boots, bringing it may be convenient. Otherwise, decide using current local conditions and confirmed availability rather than assuming you can buy or rent a particular item on arrival.
Current rental inventory and comparative prices are not established here, so there is no evidence-based buy-versus-rent price recommendation. If you are booking a glacier activity, ask the operator directly about required gear and what is included; that is separate from choosing cleats for ordinary walks.
