If you want a portable PC gaming alternative to the Steam Deck, compare the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw by exact model—not brand name alone. The right fit depends on your game stores and subscriptions, operating system, screen and portability preferences, and the price and configuration available where you live. The available sources do not establish a controlled performance or battery-life winner across these devices.
Which handheld PCs are the main Steam Deck alternatives?
AMD’s handheld portfolio lists the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, and Valve Steam Deck, making those product lines a useful starting point for comparison (AMD’s handheld gaming portfolio). These are product families, not four single, fixed configurations: each manufacturer may offer different generations, chips, memory, storage, and regional variants.

For example, ASUS distinguishes the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) from the original ROG Ally, which launched in Z1 and Z1 Extreme configurations. Lenovo’s cited current product page identifies Legion Go Gen 2, while MSI’s page identifies Claw 8 AI+ (ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20; Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2; MSI Claw 8 AI+). Confirm the full model name and configuration on the seller’s listing before comparing prices or specifications.
How to choose an alternative
Start with your games, stores, and subscriptions
Check whether the exact handheld supports the stores, launchers, subscriptions, and online features you rely on, including any anti-cheat requirements for multiplayer games. ASUS specifies Windows 11 Home for the ROG Xbox Ally X20. Its 2023 announcement for the original ROG Ally said it supported titles from Steam, Epic, and Xbox Game Pass; that statement does not guarantee that every game works, nor does it establish compatibility for every other handheld (ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 product page; ASUS’s May 11, 2023 ROG Ally announcement).

Also consider how much setup and troubleshooting you are comfortable doing. A Windows device may suit someone who wants access to a Windows-based gaming setup, but the operating system alone does not guarantee that a game will launch or perform well. Verify the game’s requirements and current device-specific support rather than assuming a whole library is compatible.
Compare exact generations and configurations
Write down the model generation, processor option, memory, and storage for each candidate. The original ROG Ally, for instance, came in Z1 and Z1 Extreme versions; ASUS’s launch announcement specified 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage for its launch configuration (ASUS’s May 11, 2023 announcement; Pocket Tactics’ Steam Deck alternatives guide). Those launch details should not be treated as specifications for every ROG Ally or newer ROG Xbox Ally model.

Do the same for the Legion Go and Claw. The product pages identify specific newer models, but the available details do not establish a full, like-for-like specification set for every model discussed here. Do not fill gaps by borrowing specifications from another generation or configuration.

Lenovo identifies the Legion Go Gen 2 as having an 8.8-inch screen (Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 product page). A larger display may appeal if screen space matters most, but screen size alone cannot tell you how comfortable a device will be to carry or hold. Compare the exact model’s dimensions, weight, controls, and any detachable or adjustable components before deciding.

TechRadar described the prior Legion Go as bulky and heavier than some options. That is a judgment about the older model, not a measured comparison of Legion Go Gen 2 (TechRadar’s Steam Deck alternatives guide). Treat it as a reason to check the newer device’s own dimensions and weight—not as a verdict about the entire Legion Go family.
Use performance and battery evidence carefully
There is no controlled, common benchmark in the available sources that establishes a performance or battery-life winner across these alternatives. A processor name or product-generation label is not enough to predict how long a particular game will run on battery or how smoothly it will play. For useful comparisons, look for results from the same games, similar settings, and clearly described power conditions for the exact configurations you are considering.

Check price and availability in your region
Prices and stock vary by seller, date, configuration, and country. ASUS’s US product page displayed $1,299.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X20 when accessed; that is a time-sensitive US listing, not a complete market comparison (ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 product page). Compare current local listings for all the models you are considering, and make sure each listed price refers to the same generation and configuration.

What accessories should you consider?
Choose accessories for the specific handheld rather than assuming that one item fits every device. ASUS documented a microSD slot on the 2023 ROG Ally, which may matter if you want removable storage. MSI lists a case, screen protector, docking station, and 100W adapter as bundle components for the Claw 8 AI+ (ASUS’s 2023 ROG Ally announcement; MSI Claw 8 AI+ product page). Check that an accessory matches the exact model and that it is included in the particular listing you plan to buy.
