Do You Need Antivirus on Windows If Microsoft Defender Is Enabled?

For most people using a supported, fully updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, Microsoft Defender is sufficient as the computer’s real-time antivirus. You generally should not install a second product that scans continuously alongside it. Defender already monitors files and programs, receives security-intelligence updates through Windows Update, and includes protections such as tamper protection.

A paid security suite can still be sensible when you specifically need extras—such as identity monitoring, parental controls, a bundled VPN, backup, centralized administration, or support—or when your risk profile justifies another vendor. That is a feature and risk-tolerance decision, not a basic requirement for Windows.

What Microsoft Defender provides

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into supported editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its real-time protection continuously monitors files and programs as they are opened, downloaded, or executed, looking for viruses, spyware, ransomware and other unwanted software.

Windows obtains new security intelligence through Windows Update. That means Defender’s effectiveness depends partly on keeping Windows online long enough to receive updates and installing the operating-system and application patches that close exploitable vulnerabilities.

Core protections to understand

  • Real-time protection: scans activity as it happens instead of waiting for a manual scan.
  • Security-intelligence updates: deliver current detection data through Windows Update.
  • Tamper protection: helps stop malicious applications from changing Defender settings.
  • Controlled folder access: can restrict untrusted applications from changing files in protected folders, a useful defense against some ransomware behavior.

These features are part of Windows Security rather than a separate download. A compatible third-party antivirus normally causes Defender Antivirus to turn itself off, so installing another product does not create two fully independent layers of real-time scanning.

How strong is Defender in independent testing?

Recent consumer tests show strong protection, while also demonstrating why one score should not be treated as a permanent guarantee. Laboratories use different samples, periods and scoring methods, so results from separate tests are not interchangeable.

Laboratory and test Product and platform Protection result Other reported scores
AV-TEST, July and August 2026 Windows 11 consumer test Microsoft Defender Antivirus 4.18 100% protection against zero-day malware in both months; 100% detection of prevalent malware in both months Protection 6.0/6.0; performance 5.5/6.0; usability 6.0/6.0
AV-Comparatives, February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test Updated products on fully patched 64-bit Windows 11 systems 396 of 400 cases blocked; reported protection rate 99.0% The published result reports the protection rate; it does not provide a directly comparable AV-TEST point score

AV-Comparatives described Defender as having matured into a “capable and credible endpoint protection solution” in commentary published on 26 May 2026. The same context notes that measurable differences between products remain. In practical terms, Defender is a serious modern security product, but no laboratory result means every future threat will be blocked on every computer.

Why most home users should not run two real-time antiviruses

Two products that both intercept files, processes and network activity can compete for the same events. Microsoft advises that users do not need another real-time antivirus or antispyware product when Microsoft security software is protecting the device.

Possible problems with simultaneous installation

  • Lower performance because both products inspect the same files and processes.
  • Installation, update or removal errors caused by competing drivers and services.
  • Conflicting quarantine decisions or repeated alerts that make it harder to tell which product is active.
  • A false sense of extra protection even though one product may automatically disable its real-time engine.

On-demand scanners are a different category: a tool that runs only when you start it is not the same as a second always-on antivirus. If you install a replacement security product, remove the previous real-time product cleanly and confirm which protection engine Windows Security reports as active.

Check that Defender is actually protecting your PC

Having Windows installed does not prove that every protection setting is enabled. Use this check after a major update, after removing another antivirus, or whenever Windows Security reports a warning.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu or Windows search.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under the protection-status area, open Manage settings if necessary.
  4. Confirm that Real-time protection is On.
  5. Leave Tamper protection enabled unless a specific administrator-managed task requires changing it.
  6. Run a quick scan when you need an immediate check; use a full scan when symptoms or a known exposure warrant a more extensive examination.

Labels can vary slightly by Windows release, but the Virus & threat protection page is the central place to verify Defender’s status. If a compatible third-party antivirus is installed, Windows may show that product as the active provider and Defender’s real-time engine as off.

Use Controlled folder access carefully

Controlled folder access is available from the ransomware-protection area of Windows Security. It can block an untrusted application from changing protected folders. The setting can also interrupt legitimate software that writes to those locations, so approve an application only when you understand why it needs access. Do not respond to a block by broadly disabling protection without checking the application first.

Keeping Defender effective requires more than turning on a switch

Antivirus reduces malware risk; it cannot compensate for an unpatched operating system, an outdated browser or a deliberately unsafe download. Apply Windows updates and update applications, browsers, extensions and document viewers. AV-Comparatives notes that current software reduces exposure to exploits that security software may not be able to prevent before a vulnerability is patched.

Everyday practices that matter

  • Install applications from sources you trust and avoid pirated or modified installers.
  • Check a download’s publisher and file type before opening it, especially when an email or message creates urgency.
  • Use a separate, non-administrator Windows account for ordinary work when practical.
  • Keep important files backed up so a malware incident or hardware failure does not become permanent data loss.
  • Do not approve an unexpected elevation prompt merely because an installer asks for it.

These habits are not substitutes for Defender. They reduce the number of dangerous events Defender has to handle and limit the damage if an account or application is compromised.

When a paid security suite can be reasonable

Choosing another product makes sense when you can name the additional capability you need and accept its trade-offs. The decision should be based on the bundle and management model, not on the assumption that Windows has no antivirus.

Examples of defined needs

  • Identity monitoring: alerts about certain personal-data exposures or account risks that Defender does not present as a bundled consumer service.
  • Parental controls: web filtering, screen-time rules or activity reports for a family-managed device.
  • Bundled VPN or backup: a single subscription that includes services you would otherwise obtain separately.
  • Centralized management: dashboards, policy controls and reporting for a household, school or small organization with multiple devices.
  • Different support arrangements: vendor assistance or recovery services that are important to your situation.

Before paying, check whether the feature works on your Windows edition, how many devices the license covers, whether the service renews automatically, what data it collects, and how much system performance it uses. A suite with many extras can be useful, but unused features add cost and another company’s software and data practices to your setup.

How to switch safely if you choose another antivirus

  1. Confirm the new product supports your Windows version and obtain its installer from the vendor’s legitimate distribution channel.
  2. Save work, close applications and note any existing exclusions or firewall rules you may need to recreate.
  3. Uninstall the current third-party antivirus through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the exact label can vary by Windows release), then restart if requested. If the vendor supplies an official cleanup utility for a failed uninstall, use that vendor-documented tool rather than deleting folders manually.
  4. Install the replacement and allow it to enable its real-time protection, security updates and any requested Windows Security integration.
  5. Return to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and verify that the intended provider is active and that no protection warning remains.
  6. Run an update and a scan before resuming normal downloads. Do not leave two real-time products enabled while troubleshooting.

If the new installation fails, restore a known working state: restart, remove the incomplete product using its documented uninstaller, and verify that Defender’s Real-time protection is On. Installation errors are one reason Microsoft discourages stacking real-time products.

Exclusions, tamper protection and common mistakes

Be conservative with exclusions

An exclusion tells Defender not to check a file, folder, process or extension in the usual way. Microsoft warns that excluded items are no longer checked by real-time scanning. Use an exclusion only for a specific, understood compatibility problem, make it as narrow as possible, and remove it when the reason no longer exists. Excluding a download folder, an entire drive or a broad development directory can create a large blind spot.

Do not disable tamper protection casually

Tamper protection helps prevent malicious software from changing security settings. A legitimate administrative workflow may require a temporary change, but ordinary troubleshooting should not begin by turning it off. Re-enable it immediately after the task and check the protection status again.

Do not mistake a clean scan for a guarantee

A scan reports what the engine recognizes at that time. It cannot certify that a future file is safe, that an online account has not been stolen, or that an unpatched application is harmless. Continue updating software and treating unexpected links and attachments cautiously.

Answers to the questions Windows users ask most

Is Microsoft Defender enough for Windows 11?

For most home users on a supported and updated Windows 11 installation, yes. The 2026 AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives results show strong recent protection, and Microsoft includes real-time monitoring and automatic security-intelligence updates. Your decision can change if you require a specific bundled service or centralized controls.

Should I install another antivirus with Defender?

Not as a second always-on engine. Microsoft says another real-time antivirus or antispyware product is unnecessary, and competing products can hurt performance or cause installation and update problems. Choose a replacement only for a defined feature or risk-management reason, then verify which provider is active.

Can I run two antivirus programs at once?

You can sometimes install them, but running two simultaneous real-time products is not recommended. One may disable itself, or the pair may conflict. A manual, on-demand scanner is a different use case because it does not continuously intercept activity.

What if Windows Security says protection is off?

Open Virus & threat protection, turn Real-time protection on, install pending Windows updates and restart. If another antivirus is installed, decide which product you intend to keep and remove the other cleanly. Recheck the active provider after the restart.
