Yes. Apple’s October 2026 requirements say that video summaries and natural-language search for HomeKit Secure Video recordings require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, a compatible HomeKit Secure Video camera, a compatible home hub, and an eligible iCloud+ subscription. The free 5 GB iCloud tier does not qualify.
Apple has not publicly identified the exact minimum iCloud+ storage tier for the AI-summary features. The ordinary HomeKit Secure Video camera limits are published by plan, but Apple says AI-summary availability is governed by a separate, changeable plan limit. Do not assume that a plan’s ordinary camera count is also its AI-summary allowance.

What Apple Home camera AI summaries do
Apple’s generated descriptions are intended to help you understand a sequence of security-camera clips without watching every second. Natural-language search lets you look for events in HomeKit Secure Video recordings using ordinary phrases, while video summaries condense what happened across related clips.
The feature applies to recordings from compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras. It is not a general-purpose video-analysis service for any camera connected to the Home app, and Apple’s requirement is tied specifically to HomeKit Secure Video recording setup.

Apple describes the processing as private: the home hub analyzes video with on-device intelligence to determine whether footage needs to be recorded to iCloud. Recordings are end-to-end encrypted and do not count against your iCloud storage quota.
Requirements before summaries can work
An eligible iCloud+ subscription
HomeKit Secure Video storage and the AI-summary functions require a paid iCloud+ plan. A free iCloud account with 5 GB of storage is not enough, even if you own a compatible camera and home hub. Apple’s October 2026 wording says the plan must be “eligible,” but the company does not state the minimum tier in that announcement.
An Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad
Setup must use an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence. Apple’s June 8, 2026 platform list includes iPhone 16 or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip, and iPad models with M1 or later. Apple also lists newer Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch hardware in its broader Apple Intelligence availability information, with pairing conditions; that list should not be read as proof that those devices can independently set up Home camera summaries. Apple’s specific camera requirement is an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad.
A compatible HomeKit Secure Video camera
The camera must support HomeKit Secure Video. A camera that only appears in the Home app through another integration does not automatically qualify. Apple’s documentation does not require one particular camera model, so compatibility must be checked for the exact model and software version you plan to use.
A home hub
HomeKit Secure Video requires a home hub. Apple names HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K running current software as examples. Apple’s iCloud terms also describe an iPad acting as a home hub as a supported arrangement. The hub must remain configured for the home so it can process camera events when your iPhone or iPad is away.

Supported software, language, and region
Apple warns that feature availability can change with software releases, plan changes, device support, language, and region. A device that meets the hardware requirement may still lack summaries if the relevant operating-system release or regional service availability has not reached it.
Which iCloud+ tier is required?
Apple has not published a definitive minimum iCloud+ tier for AI summaries in the October 2026 requirement note. The following figures are the ordinary HomeKit Secure Video camera allowances documented by Apple, not guaranteed AI-summary allowances.
The Tool Desk

| 200 GB | 200 GB | Up to five cameras | Apple has not stated a separate number; eligibility is plan-dependent |
| 2 TB or more | 2 TB or more | Unlimited cameras | Apple has not stated a separate number; eligibility is plan-dependent |
Those ordinary limits answer how many HomeKit Secure Video cameras can use recording storage under each plan. They do not establish how many cameras can generate AI summaries or be searched with natural language. Apple says summary availability is limited by the user’s plan and that supported camera counts may change.
A July 2026 report from MacRumors said a 2 TB plan was the minimum for the feature. That is secondary reporting, not the minimum Apple states in its own October requirements, so treat it as an unconfirmed possibility rather than a purchase rule. If Apple later publishes a tier requirement, that official statement should take precedence.
Why the free 5 GB plan fails
The free tier lacks the eligible iCloud+ subscription Apple requires for HomeKit Secure Video AI summaries. Upgrading is therefore a prerequisite, not merely a way to obtain more room for clips. The camera, hub, and Apple Intelligence device still have to meet their own requirements after you subscribe.

HomeKit Secure Video recordings do not consume your iCloud storage allocation. That does not remove the need for iCloud+; it means the camera recordings are handled separately from ordinary files, photos, backups, and other iCloud data when Apple calculates your storage usage.

How to prepare and enable the feature
Apple’s public requirement note describes the components rather than publishing one universal set of screen names. Menus can vary by operating-system release, so use the labels shown on your devices. The practical sequence is:
- Confirm the Apple Intelligence device. Use an iPhone or iPad from Apple’s supported list, update it to software that offers the camera-summary features, and complete Apple Intelligence setup if the device presents that step.
- Subscribe to an eligible iCloud+ plan. The free 5 GB account cannot satisfy the requirement. Apple has not stated whether every paid tier is eligible, so verify the plan’s current HomeKit Secure Video and summary support in the subscription details shown for your region.
- Set up a home hub. Add a HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, or supported iPad as the home hub and keep its software current. Check in the Home app that the hub is connected rather than unavailable.
- Add a HomeKit Secure Video camera. Pair a compatible camera with the home, then enable its HomeKit Secure Video recording option when offered. A camera can be visible in Home without being configured for secure recording, so confirm that recording is actually enabled.
- Look for summaries and natural-language search. After clips exist, open the camera’s recorded activity in the Home app and check for generated descriptions or the natural-language search control. These controls may not appear until the account, hub, device, software, language, and region all qualify.
- Test with a real recorded event. Trigger an ordinary, permitted event and wait for the clip to finish processing. Use the resulting clip to verify that descriptions and search work; a live camera view alone does not demonstrate that secure recording or summaries are configured.
Do not confuse recording limits with AI limits
The most common plan mistake is treating the published camera counts as a complete feature matrix. A 200 GB plan is documented for up to five ordinary HomeKit Secure Video cameras, while a 2 TB plan is documented for unlimited ordinary cameras. Apple separately says that AI-summary support and camera counts are limited by the plan and may change.
For example, knowing that your 200 GB subscription can record five cameras does not prove that all five can produce summaries. Conversely, an AI-summary limit could be lower than the ordinary recording allowance even when recording itself works. Keep two questions separate when checking a plan: “How many cameras can record?” and “How many cameras are eligible for summaries and natural-language search?”
Privacy and processing
According to Apple Support, the home hub privately analyzes the video with on-device intelligence to decide whether it needs to be recorded to iCloud. This design keeps the initial event analysis on the hub rather than requiring the camera feed to be sent to a general cloud-analysis service.

Apple also states that HomeKit Secure Video recordings are end-to-end encrypted. The footage does not count against your iCloud storage capacity, although the paid iCloud+ requirement still applies. These protections describe Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video architecture; they do not make every third-party camera integration equivalent to HomeKit Secure Video.

No summary or search control appears
- Confirm that the account has an iCloud+ subscription rather than only the free 5 GB tier.
- Verify that setup was performed with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, not only a Mac, Apple Watch, or Vision Pro.
- Check that the camera is a HomeKit Secure Video model and that secure recording is enabled.
- Open the Home app’s hub status and make sure a HomePod, Apple TV 4K, or supported iPad is available and running current software.
- Check software version, language, and regional availability; Apple says these can affect access and limits.
Recording works but AI features do not
This symptom is consistent with the two limits being different. Ordinary recording may be within the plan’s camera allowance while summaries are outside the separate plan-dependent allowance. Review Apple’s current plan information rather than assuming that the 50 GB, 200 GB, or 2 TB recording number applies to AI.
Only some cameras show the feature
Check each camera’s HomeKit Secure Video compatibility and the plan-dependent summary limit. Apple allows the ordinary camera count to vary by tier and says AI-supported counts may change, so a mixed result can reflect eligibility rather than a defective camera.
The hub is unavailable
AI processing depends on the home hub. Restore the hub’s connection and current software status before troubleshooting the camera or the iPhone. Without an available hub, the required on-device analysis and secure recording workflow cannot operate as intended.

A practical buying and upgrade decision
If you have one camera
The 50 GB plan is documented for one ordinary HomeKit Secure Video camera, but Apple has not confirmed that it qualifies for AI summaries. Choose it only if Apple’s current plan details for your region explicitly show summary eligibility at that tier.
Best Value
If you have two to five cameras
The 200 GB plan is documented for up to five ordinary cameras. It may still have a different AI-summary allowance, so confirm that separate limit before relying on summaries across every camera.
If you have more than five cameras
The 2 TB tier and above are documented for unlimited ordinary HomeKit Secure Video cameras. That does not automatically mean unlimited AI summaries; the summary allowance remains plan-dependent and subject to change.
If your priority is privacy
Use a compatible HomeKit Secure Video camera and a supported home hub. Apple’s stated model is on-device analysis by the hub, end-to-end encrypted recordings, and no deduction from iCloud storage for those recordings.

Apple Home camera AI summaries are not available on the free iCloud tier. Plan on an eligible iCloud+ subscription, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, a compatible HomeKit Secure Video camera, and a supported home hub. Apple’s published 50 GB, 200 GB, and 2 TB camera counts describe ordinary recording only; the minimum paid tier and the number of cameras eligible for AI summaries remain unspecified in Apple’s October 2026 documentation and can change with software, region, language, device support, or plan updates.
