You need a separate amplifier or receiver if it is passive. A laptop supplies an audio signal, not the speaker power a passive subwoofer needs. For a powered subwoofer, the key is matching the laptop’s output to the subwoofer’s input; an amplifier is not a substitute for checking those connections.
First check whether the subwoofer is powered or passive
A powered, or active, subwoofer has an amplifier built in and typically connects to AC power. It accepts an audio signal through inputs such as RCA. A passive subwoofer has no built-in amplifier and needs an external amplifier or receiver suited to its electrical requirements. Check the subwoofer’s labels and manual rather than relying on its appearance alone. Focusrite’s connection guidance distinguishes active-subwoofer setups from passive speaker systems that need amplification; Onkyo’s A-9030/9050 support describes connecting a subwoofer with a built-in power amplifier to a subwoofer pre-out.

Laptop output to a powered subwoofer
If the laptop has a 3.5 mm headphone output and the subwoofer accepts line-level RCA input, a 3.5 mm stereo-to-dual-RCA cable may work. Confirm both devices support that connection: a laptop headphone jack is not necessarily a dedicated subwoofer output, and a subwoofer’s RCA input must be suitable for a line-level signal. Edifier documents a comparable 3.5 mm-to-dual-RCA connection for a self-powered subwoofer, while Micca’s OriGain manual shows a 3.5 mm-to-RCA connection from its pre-out to a self-powered subwoofer. Laptop or audio interface to an active subwoofer and monitor speakers
For a 2.1 setup, an audio interface’s left and right line outputs can feed an active subwoofer, with the subwoofer’s outputs then connected to monitor speakers. In Focusrite’s stereo-mixing example, the subwoofer’s crossover helps divide frequencies between it and the monitors. Check the manuals for the interface, subwoofer, and monitors to confirm the inputs, outputs, and routing are compatible. Focusrite’s stereo setup guidance.

Laptop to an amplifier or receiver to a passive subwoofer
For a passive subwoofer, route the laptop’s audio through an amplifier or receiver designed to drive that subwoofer. The amplifier’s output connection and power and load ratings must meet the subwoofer’s specifications. There is no universal amplifier recommendation without those model details. Focusrite’s guidance describes using an amplifier or receiver for passive speaker setups. Focusrite’s guidance on subwoofer connections.
Laptop has no matching audio output
An audio interface or DAC can be an option if it provides an output compatible with the subwoofer. It is not automatically required: first identify the ports on both devices and determine whether a suitable direct connection is available. Focusrite documents interface line outputs as one way to feed an active subwoofer. Focusrite’s connection example.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 【Big Power in Tiny Size】Drives left/right speakers (≤50W each, 4-8Ω) plus subwoofer (≤100W). Perfect for bookshelf speakers, TV soundbars, or DIY boomboxes.
- 【Dual Input Modes – Bluetooth & AUX】 Stream wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0 (up to 33ft) or connect any device using the 3.5mm AUX input. Works with phones, TVs, computers, and more.
- 【More Power with 24V Supply】 Runs on DC 12V-24V / 5A or above (power supply NOT included). Higher voltage = bigger sound. Users say 24V makes it "room-shaking."

Check bass routing and connection safety
- Do not mix up line-level and speaker-level connections. A powered amplifier’s speaker output is not the same as a laptop or interface line output; use the input specified by the subwoofer’s manual. Focusrite distinguishes interface line outputs from the amplification needed for passive speaker systems. Focusrite guidance.
- Do not assume the headphone jack provides subwoofer-only audio. A standard stereo headphone output may send full-range stereo rather than a dedicated low-frequency or LFE channel. Whether bass is redirected to the subwoofer depends on the source, subwoofer, and any interface or receiver. Focusrite treats multichannel sub/LFE routing differently from its ordinary stereo setup. Focusrite multichannel setup guidance.
- Verify power and input requirements. A powered subwoofer needs its own power connection and must accept the signal you plan to send. Edifier notes that its documented sub-out arrangement requires a self-powered subwoofer or an added amplifier. Edifier’s sub-out instructions.
- Follow device-specific precautions. Turn equipment off before changing connections if its manual requires it, and begin with conservative volume settings.
What to check before buying anything
- Read the subwoofer’s model label or manual to establish whether it is powered or passive.
- Identify the subwoofer’s supported input—such as line-level RCA or speaker terminals—and the laptop’s available audio output.
- For a powered subwoofer, choose a cable or interface only if it connects those specific output and input types.
- For a passive subwoofer, check its electrical specifications and use a compatible amplifier or receiver.
- If you need bass redirected from stereo speakers, check whether the subwoofer, interface, or receiver provides the required crossover or bass-management routing.
