If your Pixel started draining faster after a display change, undo or adjust that change first. Lower brightness, turn off Smooth Display and Always-on Display, and shorten Screen timeout; then check Battery usage if the drain continues. Google does not publish a guaranteed battery-life gain for any one setting, and the effect depends on your Pixel model and how you use its screen.
Start with the display setting you changed
Return to the setting you changed most recently and adjust one thing at a time. Use the phone normally between changes so you can tell whether a particular adjustment appears to help. This is a practical way to narrow down the cause, not a controlled test, and other apps or recent software changes can also affect battery use.

Which display settings should you change?
Lower brightness
Move the brightness slider down to a level that remains comfortable to read. Google lists lower screen brightness as a way to save battery. Adaptive brightness can adjust to ambient light and learn your preferences; on Pixel 4 and later, it can temporarily brighten beyond the normal maximum in very bright conditions. If the screen seems unusually bright, check whether Adaptive brightness is contributing before settling on a manual level.
Turn off Smooth Display if your Pixel offers it
Smooth Display can make scrolling and motion look smoother, but Google says it increases battery use. Turn it off in display settings if you would rather prioritize battery life over that added smoothness. The feature and refresh-rate limits vary by model: Google’s display guidance lists up to 120 Hz for Pixel 8a and Pixel Fold, 60–120 Hz for Pixel 8, 1–120 Hz for Pixel 8 Pro, and up to 90 Hz for Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a. Battery Saver also disables Smooth Display. These are device specifications, not estimates of battery savings.

Turn off Always-on Display and shorten Screen timeout
Always-on Display keeps information visible while the phone is idle, so disabling it reduces time spent showing content. A shorter Screen timeout also turns the display off sooner; Google gives 30 seconds as an example. If Screen attention is enabled, the screen may stay on while you are looking at it, which can affect when timeout takes effect.
Try Dark theme and a static wallpaper
Google says Dark theme darkens backgrounds on some screens and recommends turning off live wallpapers as battery-saving options. The benefit is not universal or quantified, so treat these as reasonable settings to try rather than a promised fix.

Check whether an app or system process is using battery
If changing display settings does not resolve the drain, review battery use rather than assuming the screen is still the cause.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Inspect the app and system views to see which items account for battery use.
- For apps with high background or overall use, check their settings and leave app battery optimization enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- If you have a Pixel 6 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly to run the available diagnostic.
Allow for updates and new-device setup
After a software update, Google says it is normal for battery drain to be a little higher while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If unusual drain remains after a few days, seek Google’s support guidance. After initial setup or a factory reset, Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to fully learn usage patterns. Keep Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled while it learns.

When to seek support or inspection
Heat can accelerate battery drain and damage the battery, so avoid leaving a hot phone in direct sun or continuing heavy use when it is already overheating. Google recommends authorized repair inspection if a question mark appears on the battery icon. If the icon looks normal but unusual drain persists after the checks above, use Google’s diagnostic and support path rather than concluding that the battery needs replacement.
