1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou need an Amazon account for the standard Alexa app and Echo setup, but you do not generally need Amazon Prime or a paid subscription just to use Alexa. Alexa also requires an internet connection and an Alexa-enabled product, which can be an Echo device or the Alexa app. Some optional features and services cost extra, and free music listening has specific limits.
What you need to use Alexa
For the standard Alexa app and Echo setup path, plan on having three things: an Amazon account, an Alexa-enabled product, and an internet connection. Amazon’s Alexa app download instructions tell users to sign in with an Amazon account. Its Echo setup instructions direct users to the Alexa app to set up or register supported Echo models. Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use, last updated May 14, 2026, state in section 1.1: “An Alexa Enabled Product and internet connection are required to access and use Alexa.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
An Amazon account and Prime membership are different things. The account is the sign-in used along the standard app and Echo setup route; Prime is a paid membership that is not a general prerequisite for Alexa access. A subscription may apply to a particular service or premium feature, but that does not mean Alexa itself requires a subscription.
Keep the scope of that account requirement in mind: Amazon’s app instructions call for signing in, and its Echo guide uses the app to set up or register supported Echo models. Those directions establish what to expect for the common app-and-Echo path; they do not establish that every conceivable Alexa-enabled product or third-party arrangement follows exactly the same setup. If you are using a different product, check its own setup instructions.

Do you need an Echo, or can you use the Alexa app?
You do not necessarily have to buy an Echo to use Alexa. Amazon’s terms identify Echo devices and the Alexa app as examples of Alexa-enabled products, so the app is another supported way to access Alexa. An Echo is relevant when you want a dedicated Alexa-enabled speaker or another Echo capability; it is not a universal requirement for every use of Alexa.
| Access method | What the official information establishes | Internet and feature considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Alexa app | Amazon’s app instructions say to install the app and sign in with an Amazon account. The app is an example of an Alexa-enabled product. | Alexa access requires an internet connection. Feature availability may vary by product and area. |
| Echo device | Amazon provides setup or registration directions for supported Echo models through the Alexa app. Echo devices are Alexa-enabled products. | Alexa access requires an internet connection. The capabilities available depend on the particular device and service. |
The comparison is about the access route, not a promise that every Alexa function works identically in the app and on an Echo. Amazon’s terms caution that some services may not be available in every area or on every Alexa-enabled product. If you need one specific capability, check its requirements for the product you intend to use instead of assuming that the general Alexa access rule guarantees it.
For a basic choice, consider whether you want to access Alexa through the app or use an Echo device. The app route avoids buying an Echo solely to access Alexa, while Echo setup is the relevant route if you want an Echo. The available information does not establish current Echo models, prices, or which device is best for a particular household, so check the requirements and current details for any specific capability before choosing hardware.

The exact screens can change, and Amazon’s instructions cover supported models rather than every possible third-party arrangement. For the common app-and-Echo route, the supported sequence is straightforward:

- Choose an access method. Use the Alexa app as an Alexa-enabled product, or use an Echo if you want an Echo device. You do not need to purchase an Echo solely because you want to access Alexa through the app.
- Install the Alexa app if you are using the app or setting up an Echo. Follow Amazon’s Download the Alexa App instructions for your device.
- Sign in with an Amazon account. Amazon’s app instructions call for an Amazon account sign-in. This is not the same as enrolling in Prime.
- For an Echo, use the Alexa app to set up or register the supported model. Follow Amazon’s Set Up Your Echo directions for that model.
- Connect to the internet. An internet connection is a stated requirement for access to and use of Alexa under Amazon’s terms.
- Check the requirement for any extra service you want. Music, third-party services, and premium Alexa features can have separate availability rules, fees, or subscription requirements.
This sequence separates access from add-ons. An Amazon sign-in and connected Alexa-enabled product address the standard access path; they do not automatically enroll you in Prime or a paid music plan. Conversely, having an account does not guarantee access to a particular service, feature, or catalog. Check those terms separately, especially if you are setting up Alexa for one specific use.
Does Alexa require Prime or another subscription?
No paid membership is generally required just to access Alexa. Amazon’s terms distinguish access to Alexa from optional services: some Alexa services may not be available everywhere or on every Alexa-enabled product, and some may require separate fees or subscriptions. Certain optional Alexa features and premium features offered through some third-party services also require a subscription or fee.
That distinction matters when an individual feature is described as included with a membership. Amazon’s current Alexa page describes Alexa+ as “free with Prime.” That statement is about Alexa+, not proof that ordinary Alexa access requires Prime. Because eligibility and availability can change by place and over time, check the current Alexa+ offer information if Alexa+ is the reason you are considering Prime.

Before paying for a service, identify what you want to do and check that service’s own terms. The general Alexa account requirement does not tell you whether a specific music catalog, premium feature, or third-party service is included, free, or subscription-based. Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use are the relevant starting point for the broad distinction, while the service provider’s current details determine the terms for an individual feature.

- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
In other words, there are separate decisions: whether to use Alexa, whether to buy or use a compatible Alexa-enabled product, and whether to pay for an optional service. A Prime offer for Alexa+ or a subscription requirement for a third-party premium feature applies to that particular feature; it should not be taken as a blanket price of entry for Alexa.
Can Alexa play music for free without Prime or Music Unlimited?
In the United States, Amazon Music says customers without Prime or an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription can listen for free to an ad-supported selection of top playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices. This is a limited, specific example—not a promise of free access to every song, the full Amazon Music catalog, every music service, or the same offer in other countries. See the Amazon Music FAQ for the current details.
In practice, separate three questions: whether Alexa itself is accessible, whether the device is compatible with the music feature, and what listening selection the music service makes available under your region and membership status. A free ad-supported selection answers only the third question for the stated US offer; it does not remove Alexa’s internet and enabled-product requirements.
So, if your main question is whether Alexa can play music without a paid Amazon membership, the answer is yes for that described US option, with important limits: it is ad-supported, consists of a selection of playlists and stations, and requires a compatible Alexa-enabled device. It is not the same as an unlimited on-demand catalog. Do not assume the same free selection, catalog, or terms apply in another country or through another music provider.

Why a particular Alexa feature may still be unavailable
Being able to access Alexa does not mean every Alexa-related service works on every device or in every location. Amazon’s terms explicitly allow for differences in regional availability and product support, as well as separate fees or subscriptions for some services. That is why a feature can be unavailable even when the account and general Alexa setup are in order.
- Check the product requirement. Confirm whether the feature is supported on the Alexa-enabled product you are using; Amazon says service availability can vary by product.
- Check regional availability. A service or offer may not be available in your area. Do not assume that an offer described for the United States applies elsewhere.
- Check whether the feature has its own fee or subscription. The general ability to use Alexa does not include every optional premium or third-party service.
- For music, check the catalog and listening terms. The free Amazon Music example is ad-supported and limited to a selection of playlists and stations for US customers on compatible devices.
- For Alexa+, check the current offer conditions. Amazon describes Alexa+ as free with Prime, but the offer statement should not be read as a universal claim about standard Alexa access or as a guarantee of availability for every user.
If you are deciding whether to buy an Echo or subscribe to something, start with the exact activity you want: app access, Echo use, music, Alexa+, or a third-party service. Then verify the compatible product and the service’s terms. The account, internet, and enabled-product requirements answer whether you can access Alexa through the standard route; they do not settle the separate terms for each optional feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account, Prime, and subscription: the practical distinction
Use the following distinction when you see a requirement or offer described as “for Alexa”:
- Amazon account: Sign-in for the standard Alexa app route; Amazon also directs Echo setup through that app.
- Alexa-enabled product: The means of access, such as the Alexa app or an Echo device.
- Internet connection: Required to access and use Alexa under Amazon’s terms.
- Prime or another paid plan: Not generally required for Alexa access, though a particular feature or service may be tied to a membership, fee, or subscription.
This distinction avoids two common mistakes: assuming that every Alexa user must pay for Prime, and assuming that access to Alexa automatically includes every service available through it. Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs provide an additional official reference for device and service questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need an Amazon account to use Alexa?
For the standard Alexa app and Echo setup path, yes. Amazon’s app instructions tell users to sign in with an Amazon account, and its Echo setup guide uses the app to set up or register supported Echo models. An Amazon account is not the same as Prime.
Can I use Alexa without Prime?
Yes. Prime is not generally required for Alexa access. Amazon describes Alexa+ as free with Prime, but that offer applies to Alexa+ and does not make Prime a general requirement for standard Alexa use.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Alexa require a subscription?
Not for general access to Alexa. Some optional Alexa features, premium features in some third-party services, or other services may require a separate fee or subscription. Availability can also vary by area and device.
Do I need an Echo to use Alexa?
No, not for every use. Amazon identifies both Echo devices and the Alexa app as Alexa-enabled products. An Echo is one route; the Alexa app is another supported route. Alexa access still requires an internet connection.
Can Alexa play music for free without Amazon Music Unlimited?
Amazon Music says US customers without Prime or Music Unlimited can listen to an ad-supported selection of top playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices. It is not a promise of the full catalog or the same offer in every country.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: For the standard Alexa app or Echo setup, expect to use an Amazon account, an Alexa-enabled product, and an internet connection. You do not generally need Prime or another paid plan just to access Alexa, and you do not always need to buy an Echo. Optional features and services have their own product, regional, and subscription terms.
