Do You Need a New SIM Card for 5G? What to Check First

Some old 4G SIMs work with 5G and others do not. Check your carrier’s requirements, phone compatibility, plan, and coverage before replacing your SIM.

Not always. Whether your old 4G SIM will work for 5G depends on your carrier and the SIM itself. A new SIM cannot make a 4G-only phone connect to 5G, either: you also need a compatible 5G phone, an eligible plan and account setup, and 5G coverage where you are. Ask your carrier to check your SIM and device before replacing a card or buying a phone.

Will your old 4G SIM work with a 5G phone?

It may. There is no universal rule that every older SIM must be replaced for 5G. Requirements vary by carrier, market, SIM, and how the phone or account is being set up. For example, Verizon’s US guidance says compatible 4G and 5G SIM cards, as well as eSIMs, work on its 5G network. Samsung’s US support guidance cautions that some older SIM cards are not compatible with 5G plans and says a replacement from the carrier may be needed.

These examples are not contradictory: a SIM can be suitable for one carrier or setup and unsuitable for another. Ask your carrier whether your particular SIM or eSIM is compatible with your phone and account, and whether it needs activation or replacement.

What you need for a 5G connection

  • A 5G-capable phone that works on your carrier’s network. The phone must support the relevant network bands and carrier requirements. A 5G label alone does not guarantee compatibility with every carrier.
  • Suitable SIM or eSIM and account setup. Carrier rules differ; some also require activation or provisioning when you change devices.
  • An eligible plan. Check whether your service includes 5G access. Plan-specific data allowances and other terms still apply.
  • Local 5G coverage. Your phone can use LTE where the carrier’s 5G network is unavailable, even if the phone, SIM, and plan are otherwise suitable.

Rogers’ Canadian guidance, for example, lists 5G/5G+ coverage, a 5G mobile plan, a compatible device, and a SIM as requirements. Its guidance also says the device selects the fastest network it supports in the location. The exact requirements depend on the carrier and market.

Why carrier instructions can differ

A carrier may support a compatible 4G-era SIM for 5G access but still require you to activate a particular SIM when you upgrade phones. T-Mobile’s guidance for existing customers upgrading to a 5G device says to activate the new SIM supplied with that device; customers who no longer have it should contact T-Mobile or visit a store for a replacement. That is specific activation guidance, not evidence that all older SIMs fail on all 5G networks.

Local rules can differ, too. Brunei’s Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications says local 4G SIMs connect to its local 5G network, while 3G SIMs do not. This is an example for that market, not a general rule for other countries or carriers.

What a new SIM can—and cannot—fix

A carrier-approved replacement SIM may resolve a SIM compatibility or activation issue. It does not add 5G radio capability to a 4G-only phone. Verizon explicitly warns that putting a 5G SIM in a 4G device will not enable a 5G connection. If your phone does not support 5G on your carrier’s network, changing the SIM will not solve that limitation.

A 5G icon is an indication that the phone has connected to the carrier’s 5G network; it is not a guarantee that 5G will be available everywhere. Verizon says its devices shift automatically to LTE where 5G is unavailable. Actual access and plan terms depend on the carrier, location, device, and service.

How to check before replacing your SIM

  1. Check the phone. Confirm the exact model supports 5G bands and carrier requirements for your network, rather than relying only on a general “5G phone” description.
  2. Check coverage and settings. Look up coverage for your location with your carrier and make sure the phone’s network setting allows 5G.
  3. Check your plan and account. Ask whether your plan includes 5G access and whether the account needs any service provisioning.
  4. Ask the carrier to verify the SIM or eSIM. Give them the phone model and account details. Have them confirm compatibility and tell you whether the SIM must be activated or replaced.
  5. Follow the carrier’s setup instructions. If the SIM is confirmed compatible, restart the phone if directed. If 5G is not available in your area, a compatible phone may use LTE instead.
