It may suit eligible New Zealand residents taking an overseas return trip; whether it fits depends on your trip costs, health circumstances, activities and the exact cover shown on your Certificate of Insurance.
What this review covers
This review concerns Southern Cross Travel Insurance’s New Zealand International Comprehensive Single Trip policy. The current policy wording reviewed here is effective 12 July 2025. Who can buy this policy?
The policy is for eligible New Zealand residents travelling overseas on a return journey. The stated trip purposes include holidays, visiting friends or family, and non-manual work such as office-based travel, conferences or training. Eligibility includes permanently living in New Zealand and qualifying for New Zealand public health and disability services. The full criteria must be met, including conditions that remain applicable during the policy period. Check them in the policy wording before buying.

What does the cover include?
The benefit summary lists medical and evacuation cover as unlimited, subject to policy terms, exclusions, conditions and sublimits. “Unlimited” should not be read as meaning every medical-related cost is automatically covered.
| Benefit | Stated headline cover | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Medical and evacuation | Unlimited | Subject to wording, exclusions, conditions and applicable sublimits. |
| Terrorism-related claims | $100,000 per person | A sublimit listed in the policy summary. |
| Emergency dental treatment | $2,000 per person | A sublimit listed in the policy summary. |
| Funeral costs or return of mortal remains | $50,000 per deceased person | Subject to the policy wording. |
| Cancellation or changes before departure | $2,500 to unlimited per person | Depends on the cover selected; conditions and exclusions apply. |
| Trip interruption or cutting a journey short | Benefit listed | Check the applicable limits and conditions in the wording. |
| Changes after departure | Up to $50,000 per person | Lower limits apply in specified situations. |
| Baggage and personal items | $25,000 per person | Item caps, sublimits and depreciation rules apply. |
| Baggage delay | Benefit listed | Check the applicable limits and qualifying conditions. |
| Personal accident and personal liability | Benefits listed | Refer to the wording for definitions, exclusions and limits. |
| Rental-vehicle excess | Benefit listed | Check eligibility, applicable limits and conditions. |
These are headline figures, not a promise that every loss up to that amount qualifies. Review the full benefit wording against your actual costs and belongings.

How much cancellation and baggage cover should you select?
Cancellation
Pre-departure cancellation cover ranges from $2,500 to unlimited per person depending on the cover selected. Work out which prepaid trip costs you could lose if you had to cancel, then check that the selected limit and policy definition of a covered event match those costs. The headline maximum alone does not establish that a particular reason for cancellation is covered.

The $25,000 per-person headline for baggage and personal items is subject to per-item limits, sublimits and depreciation. If you are taking valuable items, check their individual caps and how the policy calculates their value; the overall limit may not reflect the amount recoverable for a single item.

Does ACC cover me if I’m injured overseas?
SCTI’s New Zealand product FAQ raises this question, but the policy is travel insurance rather than a substitute for checking what public or accident-related support applies to your circumstances. For a trip decision, assess the policy’s own medical and evacuation terms, conditions and exclusions rather than assuming another source of support will pay overseas costs. SCTI’s FAQ is available on its New Zealand International Comprehensive page.
What happens if I need medical treatment while travelling overseas?
The policy lists unlimited medical and evacuation cover, subject to its wording. Whether a specific treatment, evacuation or expense qualifies depends on the conditions and exclusions, as well as any applicable sublimit. Read the medical section before travel and use the assistance and claims instructions in your policy documents if an incident occurs; this review cannot determine coverage for a particular claim.

How do excess choices affect the policy?
SCTI’s New Zealand product page lists $0, $100 and $200 excess options, with $200 as the default. SCTI says a higher excess may reduce the premium. Its product information says, “The excess you select applies per unexpected event, unless stated otherwise in the policy.” Check the quote and Certificate of Insurance for the excess that applies to your purchase, and compare the premium difference with what you would have to contribute when claiming. SCTI International Comprehensive product information.
What optional cover may matter for your trip?
SCTI lists optional moped or motorbike, skiing or snowboarding, and cruise cover. An activity or incident is not necessarily covered just because an option exists: check the definitions, exclusions, requirements and selected options in your documents. The same care applies to rental-vehicle excess cover. SCTI advises comparing benefits and excess options and reading exclusions in the wording: SCTI’s comparison guide.

Is TravelCare Delay Assist useful?
TravelCare Delay Assist is described as included with SCTI International Comprehensive Single Trip cover. SCTI’s current information says flight details must be registered at least 24 hours before departure and a qualifying delay is at least two hours. It describes a $50 digital voucher per person, subject to a policy-wide cap and other endorsement conditions. Treat this as a conditional benefit, not guaranteed compensation for any delay, and read the current endorsement for the cap and eligibility rules: TravelCare Delay Assist information.
How to decide whether this policy fits
SCTI’s comparison guidance distinguishes single-trip cover from annual multi-trip cover by travel frequency. For a fair assessment, compare the policy against your trip rather than choosing on the “unlimited” headline or quoted premium alone:
- Confirm that you meet the New Zealand eligibility criteria and are taking a qualifying overseas return journey.
- Check medical and evacuation conditions, exclusions, sublimits and the treatment of your health circumstances.
- Match cancellation cover to the prepaid trip costs you want protected.
- Check baggage per-item limits and depreciation for the belongings you will carry.
- Compare the quoted premium with the selected excess and the amount payable per event.
- Confirm any activity, cruise or rental-vehicle cover you need is included or selected and applies to your plans.
- Read claims requirements and assistance conditions in the current wording, Certificate of Insurance and endorsements.
The available evidence here establishes policy terms and product information, not independent claim-acceptance rates, customer outcomes or proof that SCTI is better value than another insurer. A meaningful comparison should use equivalent cover and the same trip details.
