No. There is no universal rule that text messages delete after one year. On an iPhone, Messages has a setting that can automatically remove conversations after 30 days or one year—or keep them forever. Google Messages’ help describes archiving and manual deletion, not a standard one-year expiry. What happens depends on the app and its settings.
What “delete” means depends on where the message is stored
A conversation can exist in a messaging app on your phone, in a cloud backup, on another device signed into your account, and on the recipient’s device. Those copies do not all follow the same rules. A message disappearing from your conversation list may mean it was archived, while deletion from your device is a different action. A backup may provide a way to restore some data, but it is not a guarantee that every deleted message can be recovered.

Message types also differ: Apple Messages can handle SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage, while carrier-provided SMS is distinct from Apple’s iMessage service. Don’t infer a carrier’s message-content retention period from the setting in your messaging app; the official sources cited here do not establish a standard carrier retention period.
On iPhone, check the Keep Messages setting
Apple offers three retention choices in Messages: 30 days, one year, or forever. If a non-Forever period is selected, Apple says conversations and attachments are automatically removed when that period elapses. The setting concerns messages on your devices, not a universal expiry rule for all texts. - Open Settings and find the Messages settings. If the menu differs on your iPhone, search Settings for “Keep Messages.”
- Open Keep Messages and choose 30 Days, 1 Year, or Forever, depending on the choices shown on your software version.
- If you want to preserve a conversation, select Forever and check that the messages you care about are still present. Changing the setting does not establish that already-removed messages can be restored.
Apple says deleting a message or conversation affects the user’s iPhone and other Apple devices signed into the same Apple Account. That does not establish that the recipient’s copy is deleted.
In Google Messages, archive hides a conversation; delete removes it
Google Messages’ help explains two different actions. Archiving removes a conversation from the home screen, but it remains readable. Deleting a conversation while Google Messages is the default messaging app deletes it from the device, and Google describes that deletion as permanent. - If a conversation has disappeared from the main list, check whether it was archived before assuming it was deleted.
- If you delete a conversation, do not treat the action as a temporary hiding option; Google describes it as permanent when Messages is the default app.
- Text messages are stored in the device’s SMS database. Other apps may be able to access them subject to permissions, according to Google’s app guidance.
How backups fit in—and what they do not promise
Backups are separate from the retention setting in a messaging app. Apple says SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage can be backed up in iCloud when iCloud Backup or Messages in iCloud is enabled. Google says Android device backup can include SMS and MMS, and RCS messages when the user uses Google Messages. Neither statement guarantees that a particular message deleted from the app will be recoverable. Check the backup status and the account and device setup before relying on it.

If old messages disappeared, check these things
- On iPhone: Check Keep Messages. If it was set to 30 Days or 1 Year, Apple’s guidance says conversations and attachments are removed after the selected period.
- In Google Messages: Check whether the conversation was archived. Archived conversations are hidden from the home screen but remain readable.
- For a new or reset phone: Check whether the relevant iCloud or Android backup was enabled and when it last ran. A backup’s existence alone does not guarantee recovery.
- For another person’s copy: Do not assume deleting your copy also deletes theirs. The cited Apple guidance describes effects on your devices, not the recipient’s device.
Work or investigation records may need different handling
For FTC investigations and enforcement actions, the Federal Trade Commission says relevant communications in messaging and collaboration apps may be documents subject to requests and preservation. In a January 2024 statement, the FTC said: “Appropriate steps to retain relevant documents includes turning off automatic deletion and may even include stopping use of certain applications altogether.” This is specific to that institutional context, not a blanket rule for personal conversations. If a workplace records policy or legal hold applies to you, follow your organization’s instructions. Read the FTC statement.
