Yes. Crossover characters in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds are gameplay choices, not purely cosmetic skins. SEGA’s online manual says a racer and its Machine determine overall stats, so changing characters can change a build’s performance. The game’s Gadgets add another layer: director Shingo Kawakami says the team made them powerful enough to significantly affect race outcomes.
What is not established publicly is a complete, current stat table for every guest racer. That means you can safely say character choice matters, but you should not call one crossover racer universally “the best” without checking the live in-game values for your version.

The character slot contributes to the racer’s overall statistics alongside the Machine. SEGA states this rule in the online manual. In practical terms, selecting a guest racer can alter how a complete build performs even if you leave the Machine unchanged.

The available evidence supports a system-level conclusion rather than a ranking. It does not provide a complete, up-to-date table showing the exact values for every Sonic-universe and crossover racer. You should therefore treat a character switch as a meaningful build change, not as proof that one licensed guest is automatically faster, easier, or stronger in every race.

This is why “guest characters are only cosmetic” is an incorrect description. A cosmetic-only skin would leave the underlying build untouched; CrossWorlds instead includes the character in its stat calculation.
Why Gadgets can matter as much as the racer
Character statistics are only one part of the result. CrossWorlds lets you tailor a six-Gadget loadout, so two players using the same character and Machine can still pursue different strategies.
In SEGA’s developer interview, director Shingo Kawakami explains that the team originally considered subtler Gadget effects, then changed direction: However, to truly bring out the game’s uniqueness, we decided to make them powerful enough to significantly impact how races unfold.
The statement is about Gadgets, not crossover characters specifically, but it explains why a character comparison made without the rest of the build can be misleading.

How to think about the three-part build
- Character: supplies the character-associated portion of the overall stats.
- Machine: supplies the Machine-associated portion of those stats.
- Gadgets: add selectable effects that can change decisions and race situations.
For example, if a guest racer’s displayed statistics suit your preferred Machine, you may still get a different result after replacing one or more Gadgets. Conversely, a racer whose base statistics are not ideal for your driving style may become more useful when a Gadget loadout supports the situations in which you struggle. Those are build interactions, not evidence that a particular crossover character wins every matchup.

Are crossover characters free, or are they paid DLC?
There is no single access rule for all guest racers. SEGA has used both free updates and paid Season Pass content, and announcements identify different characters and content by release wave.

The free-update details come from SEGA’s June 9, 2025 announcement. The launch and Season Pass descriptions are in SEGA’s September 25, 2025 announcement. These are dated announcements, so they do not by themselves prove that every item is currently released in every region or on every platform.
How to test whether a guest racer fits your play style
Because exact character values can change with updates and are not all published in one reliable chart, use a controlled comparison rather than a reputation-based tier list.
- Record the displayed stats for the first racer. At character selection, note the values shown for the racer you normally use. Keep the Machine and six-Gadget loadout unchanged for the first comparison.
- Switch only the character. Select the crossover racer you want to evaluate while leaving the Machine and Gadgets intact. Any changed values are attributable to the character change within that build.
- Run comparable races. Use the same course types and race rules when possible. A result on one course is not enough to establish a universal advantage.
- Repeat with the same Machine. This isolates the character from Machine differences. If you also change the Machine, you are testing a new combined build rather than the guest racer alone.
- Test Gadgets separately. After the character comparison, change the six-Gadget loadout one slot at a time. This shows whether a perceived advantage came from the racer or from the effects you equipped.
- Recheck after major updates. CrossWorlds launched in September 2025 and SEGA describes continuing updates and DLC. A later patch or newly released content can change what is available or how a build feels.
This method answers the useful question—“Does this character work for me with my Machine and strategy?”—without pretending that a single overall ranking exists.

What “different stats” means in practice
Players often ask whether guest characters have different stats or whether they merely replace the appearance of a Sonic character. The defensible answer is that character selection contributes to overall stats, but the available official material does not establish the exact size or direction of every difference.
Do not infer a universal winner
A higher displayed value in one area would not automatically make a racer superior in every race. Your Machine changes the combined statistics, and Gadgets can alter the situations in which a build succeeds. Course layout, race rules, driving consistency and item timing also affect results, so a character that feels stronger in one context may not be the best fit in another.
Use the live game as the authority for exact numbers
If you need to compare two named racers, read the current stat panel in your installed version and keep the other build elements constant. The cited manual establishes the relationship between character, Machine and overall stats, but it is not a substitute for a current in-game table of every crossover character.

SEGA’s September 2025 launch announcement describes a launch-era roster of 23 Sonic-universe characters, more than 70 Gadgets, more than 70,000 Machine combinations and World Match races for 12 players. These are SEGA-published product figures, not independent measurements.

The large number of Machine combinations makes a fixed character tier list especially fragile. Even if two racers have different character-associated statistics, the Machine and Gadget choices create many possible builds around each one. New crossover waves also change the practical question from “Which guest is best?” to “Which racers and content are actually available in my edition and region right now?”

SEGA lists CrossWorlds for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC storefronts. Edition names, release timing and DLC availability can vary by platform and region, so confirm the listing for your specific system before buying a base game, Season Pass or individual crossover item.

Mistake: judging a racer with a different Machine and Gadgets
Correction: hold the Machine and six-Gadget loadout constant first, then test those elements separately. Otherwise you cannot tell which change produced the result.
Mistake: trusting an old roster list
Correction: check the current official listing and your platform’s DLC page. The game launched in September 2025 and receives continuing content, so availability is time-sensitive.
Mistake: assuming all crossover content is free
Correction: separate the free-update racers announced in June 2025 from Season Pass and premium DLC described in September 2025.
Mistake: declaring a character objectively best
Correction: require a current stat source and state the Machine, Gadget loadout, rules and course context. Without those details, describe a racer as a preference or build fit, not a universal winner.
