How do I verify a crypto wallet migration before moving my funds? Set up the destination wallet from its official software or device, create and inspect the correct receiving address, confirm the asset and network, send a small test transaction when practical, wait for on-chain confirmation, and only then transfer the remainder. Keep the old wallet and its backup available until the destination balance is confirmed. A wallet-app reset or reinstall does not move funds; only a signed blockchain transaction does.
First, decide whether you are restoring a wallet or moving funds
The word “migration” can describe two different operations. They have different risks and verification steps.

Restoring the same wallet
Importing a recovery phrase into compatible wallet software restores the accounts controlled by that phrase. It does not create a new wallet or move assets on-chain. The phrase is the authority: anyone who obtains it may control the accounts and their assets. Never type a recovery phrase into an unsolicited website, send it to support, or give it to someone offering help.
Restoration may be appropriate when you are replacing a phone, reinstalling software, or opening the same wallet in another compatible interface. It also means the security of the restored accounts remains tied to the phrase. If that phrase was ever photographed, entered on an internet-connected device, stored in cloud notes, or exposed to another person, importing it elsewhere does not remove the exposure.

Moving funds to a new wallet
A true migration to new keys is an on-chain transfer. You generate a receiving address in the destination wallet, sign a transaction from the old wallet, pay the applicable network fee, and wait for the blockchain to record the transfer. The destination wallet can then be secured with a new recovery phrase.
These operations can be combined—for example, restoring an old wallet temporarily while sending assets to a newly generated hardware-wallet account—but verify each part separately. Installing an app, resetting a device, or connecting a wallet to another interface never transfers coins by itself.
| Choice | What changes | Main verification concern |
|---|---|---|
| Restore the existing phrase | The same accounts and keys become visible in compatible software. | Protect the phrase and confirm that the software is official and supports the required assets. |
| Send to a new wallet | Assets move by blockchain transaction to an address controlled by new keys. | Verify the complete address, asset, network, and transaction status before sending the balance. |
| Import an online-wallet phrase into hardware | The device may display the old accounts, but the phrase has already been exposed online. | It does not restore the offline-key security model. |
| Generate a fresh hardware-wallet phrase | The hardware device creates new keys intended to remain offline. | Verify the device-screen address and protect the new backup before transferring funds. |
Prepare the destination wallet without creating a new exposure
Use the official app or device setup
Download wallet software through the wallet maker’s independently verified channel, or initialize the hardware device using its official instructions. Check that you are using the intended product and not a look-alike support page. A wallet that asks for your existing recovery phrase before you have chosen to restore an account is a warning sign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a new destination, record the newly generated recovery phrase exactly as instructed. Keep it offline and private. Do not photograph it, paste it into a password manager or cloud document, or enter it into a browser form. Anyone with the phrase can generally authorize transactions from the accounts it restores, while a support representative cannot legitimately need it.
When moving from an internet-connected wallet to hardware
MetaMask’s hardware-wallet guidance recommends creating a new recovery phrase on the hardware wallet rather than importing the phrase from an online wallet. That preserves the reason for using hardware: the new private keys are generated and retained offline. You then transfer assets from the old accounts to addresses belonging to the new accounts.
Do not describe an already exposed phrase as “made safe” because it was imported into a hardware device. If the old phrase may have been seen by malware or another person, treat the old accounts as potentially exposed and prioritize moving funds to freshly generated keys.

Keep the source wallet available
Do not delete the old wallet, wipe its device, or discard its backup before the destination has received and displayed the assets. You may need the source wallet to sign the transfer, investigate a pending transaction, or recover an overlooked asset. Keep enough of the source wallet’s native asset to pay the transaction fee, but do not assume every token can be moved in one transaction or on one network.
Generate and inspect the receiving address
Use the destination wallet’s receive flow for the exact asset you intend to move. A practical verification sequence is:
- Open the destination wallet and select the asset. Do not copy an address from an old transaction, chat message, screenshot, browser history, or address book without checking it in the current receive screen.
- Select the network offered for that asset. Wallets may show several networks or versions of an asset. The sending wallet must use the same supported chain, not merely an address with a familiar-looking format.
- Generate the receiving address. Copy it using the wallet’s copy control or scan its QR code, then compare it with the address shown by the destination interface.
- Check every character. Ethereum.org advises checking that the address exactly matches the intended recipient before sending. Compare the complete string, not only the first and last four characters. Malware can replace copied addresses, and similar prefixes or suffixes are not proof of identity.
- Verify on a hardware device when one is involved. Display the receive address on the wallet software and use the device’s own screen to confirm the address before relying on it. If the device screen and computer or phone disagree, stop; do not approve the transaction.
- Confirm the account and asset label. Make sure the displayed address belongs to the intended account and that you are not viewing a similarly named token or a different account within the same wallet.
An address alone cannot prove that the selected network is correct. Network selection is part of the destination instruction and must be checked for each asset.
Confirm the asset and the correct network
Before signing, match three things on both sides: the asset, the destination address, and the network. An address format that looks valid can still be used with the wrong chain. Trezor’s migration guidance specifically warns that sending Ethereum or ERC-20 assets over an incompatible network can result in lost funds.
| Check | Question to answer | If it does not match |
|---|---|---|
| Asset | Is the sending balance the exact coin or token selected in the destination receive screen? | Stop and select the intended asset; similarly named tokens are not interchangeable. |
| Network | Does the sender support the same chain selected by the recipient wallet? | Do not send until the official wallet interfaces confirm compatibility. |
| Address | Does the complete destination string match the one shown on the destination, including a hardware-device screen where applicable? | Cancel the operation and investigate possible clipboard replacement or phishing. |
| Fee asset | Does the source account hold enough of the network’s fee-paying asset? | Leave a fee reserve or obtain the required fee asset through a trusted, independently verified route. |
Do not apply one network rule to every token. Ethereum and ERC-20 transfers, Bitcoin transfers, and assets on other chains have different address and fee requirements. Follow the current instructions in the official wallet interfaces for the specific asset, and treat any unexpected request to bridge, “validate,” or unlock funds as suspicious.
Use a small test transaction for a substantial move
For a large balance, a small test transaction limits the amount at risk while you verify the route. It is an additional blockchain transaction, so it incurs a network fee and may take time to confirm.

- Decide on a modest amount that is meaningful enough to identify the asset and network but small enough that a mistake would be tolerable.
- Recheck the destination asset, network, complete address, and hardware-device display immediately before signing.
- Send the test from the old wallet. Save the transaction ID or equivalent record shown by the wallet.
- Wait for the transaction to be confirmed on-chain. A wallet balance that is merely “pending” is not confirmation.
- Open the destination wallet and verify that the expected asset and amount appear in the intended account. If the wallet provides a transaction view, match its transaction details to the source record.
- Investigate any discrepancy before sending more. Do not “fix” a missing deposit by sending another transaction to an unverified address.
A successful test demonstrates that the small transfer reached the destination under those particular conditions. It does not prove that every asset in the old wallet is supported, that every network choice is correct, that the recovery backup is complete, or that the old wallet was never compromised. It also does not eliminate fees for the later transfer.
Do not confuse a migration test with an exchange ownership check
Some exchanges use a separate “small deposit” or exact-amount deposit to verify that a customer controls an external wallet, sometimes with a stated completion window such as 48 hours. That process serves the exchange’s identity or ownership check. It is not the same as sending a small test from your old wallet to your new wallet to verify a migration destination. Follow the exact instructions for the process you are performing and never substitute one amount or address for another.
Transfer the remaining balance only after the test is confirmed
- Return to the source wallet and open a fresh send screen for the same asset and network.
- Obtain the destination address again from the destination wallet rather than relying on an old clipboard entry. Compare the complete address and, for hardware wallets, the device screen.
- Review the amount and the network fee. Decide whether to leave a small residual balance for future fees or to close the source account after all intended assets have moved.
- Read the transaction prompt before signing. Check the recipient, asset, network, amount, and fee; reject any prompt that requests a recovery phrase or an unrelated approval.
- Sign and broadcast the transaction from the source wallet.
- Wait for the required on-chain confirmation and verify the final balance in the destination wallet.
Keep access to the source wallet and its backup until this final receipt is confirmed. Transactions sent to a wrong address or unsupported network may be irreversible; neither a wallet company nor a recipient can necessarily reverse them.

Protect the new wallet after receipt
Secure the recovery phrase
Store the destination recovery phrase offline in the format recommended by the wallet manufacturer. Keep it protected from theft, fire, moisture, and unauthorized access, while ensuring that your recovery plan is usable if the device is lost. Do not store a digital copy merely for convenience. Anyone who finds the phrase may be able to move the assets without the device.
Check that the backup is usable without risking the funds
A test transfer confirms delivery; it does not prove that the phrase was written correctly or that it restores every account and asset. Use only the wallet’s official recovery or backup-verification feature, if provided, and follow its instructions. Never “test” a phrase by entering it into a random recovery website or sending it to support.
Review approvals and connected applications
If the old wallet interacted with decentralized applications, a balance transfer does not automatically revoke token approvals or disconnect those applications. Review connected sites and approvals through the wallet’s official controls or the relevant blockchain tools before abandoning the old account. Do not sign a transaction described as a recovery or verification step unless you understand exactly what it authorizes.

What to do if the old wallet may be compromised
If you suspect that the old recovery phrase or private key was exposed, routine migration checks must be balanced against the risk of leaving funds in the old account. An attacker who controls the key may move assets while you are waiting for a test confirmation. Do not delay an urgent transfer solely to follow a normal schedule.

Troubleshoot before sending again
The hardware screen and wallet software show different addresses
Stop immediately. Disconnect or reject the request, close the session, and repeat the receive process from the official wallet software. A mismatch can indicate a wrong account, a modified address, or malware. Do not trust the computer display over the device’s own screen.
The test is pending
Check the transaction status in the official wallet and an appropriate block explorer for the same network. Confirm that the transaction was actually broadcast and that the source wallet had enough fee-paying asset. Do not send a second transaction until you understand the first transaction’s status.
The destination shows no balance after confirmation
Confirm that you are viewing the same account, asset, and network used by the transaction. Some tokens require adding the token contract or enabling an asset display before the balance appears. Use only the contract or asset details supplied by the official wallet or project channel; never connect to a site that asks for your recovery phrase to display a balance.

The sender and recipient support different networks
Do not guess or rely on an address that looks compatible. Stop the migration and check the asset-specific network support in both official interfaces. A bridge or exchange conversion may be required, but use it only after independently verifying the service, destination instructions, fees, and risks.
The wallet asks for a recovery phrase during “support”
Reject the request. Ethereum.org, Bitcoin.org, and major wallet security guidance state that legitimate support does not need your recovery phrase or private key. End the conversation and contact support through a channel you located independently.
Choosing between migration approaches
| Approach | Advantages | Costs and limits | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restore the same phrase | Accounts reappear without an on-chain transfer or transfer fee. | Any previous phrase exposure remains; it does not create new keys. | You are replacing software or a device and the phrase is still trusted. |
| Generate a fresh hardware-wallet phrase and transfer | New keys are created for offline storage and can separate the destination from an online wallet. | Requires careful setup, on-chain fees, and address/network checks; hardware is not mandatory for every user. | You want new keys and an offline signing option. |
| Send the full balance immediately | Fewer transactions and usually fewer total network fees. | A wrong address, network, or account selection places the entire amount at risk. | Only when the route has been independently verified and urgency makes a test impractical. |
| Test first, then send the remainder | Limits the amount exposed while checking the route and destination. | Adds a transaction, fee, and waiting period; it cannot prove backup completeness or universal asset support. | For substantial transfers when the old wallet is not under active attack. |
Pre-sign verification sequence
Use this sequence immediately before each transfer, including the remainder after a successful test:
Quick Recap
- The destination wallet was initialized through an official channel.
- A new recovery phrase was generated for a new wallet, rather than importing an exposed online phrase into hardware.
- The receive screen is for the exact asset being sent.
- The selected network is supported by both wallets and matches the asset-specific instructions.
- The complete receiving address matches in the destination software and, when applicable, on the hardware-device screen.
- The source account has enough fee-paying asset for the transaction.
- The transaction prompt shows the intended recipient, amount, network, and fee.
- No person, website, or support agent has requested the recovery phrase or private key.
- The old wallet and its backup will remain available until the destination receipt is confirmed.
