SEGA’s game-specific announcements count physical copies and downloaded game titles across platforms. They do not say whether separately purchased DLC is included, so the official figures do not establish that DLC is either counted or excluded.
What SEGA says its game sales figures count
SEGA’s October 28, 2024 announcement for SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS says the game had passed one million units worldwide. Its footnote defines the figure this way: “SEGA internal data: sales figures represent the sum of sales of physical and downloaded titles and those deployed across all platforms.” SEGA’s October 28, 2024 announcement

SEGA repeated that definition when it announced that SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS had passed two million units on January 24, 2025. The game’s product details list physical and digital editions for PS5 and Nintendo Switch, and digital-only versions for Xbox and PC. SEGA’s January 24, 2025 announcement
In other words, these are game-title unit totals combining physical and digital formats—not physical-copy counts alone. SEGA’s cited wording does not separately define the treatment of paid DLC.

Does SEGA count DLC in Sonic game sales?
The official methodology cited for these announcements does not answer that specific question. It refers to physical and downloaded “titles,” but does not say whether a separately purchased add-on is included in a game’s unit total. It would therefore be too strong to claim that all paid DLC is excluded—or that it is included.
Free updates and DLC are not the same as a stated unit-count rule
SEGA’s August 17, 2026 Sonic Frontiers release says the game had passed five million units worldwide as of August 14, 2026, counting physical units and digital downloads. The same release discusses the game’s major free updates and DLC, but does not say that their downloads form part of the five-million figure. SEGA’s August 17, 2026 release

An earlier Sonic Frontiers announcement reported more than 2.5 million copies worldwide while discussing forthcoming free DLC, and used the same physical-and-downloaded-title definition. That example also does not resolve how separately sold paid add-ons are accounted for. SEGA’s November 22, 2022 announcement

Don’t confuse a game’s units with Sonic franchise totals
A single-game milestone and a franchise-wide sales-and-downloads figure have different scopes. SEGA’s October 2024 announcement also reported 1.66 billion Sonic series sales/downloads and explicitly noted that this broader franchise figure includes downloads of free-to-play titles. It should not be read as a count of paid copies of one game, or compared directly with a named game’s unit milestone. SEGA’s October 28, 2024 announcement

How to read a Sonic sales milestone
- Check the scope: Is the number for one game or the entire Sonic franchise?
- Check the formats: SEGA’s cited game announcements combine physical copies and digital game titles across platforms.
- Check the add-on wording: A release may mention DLC without clarifying whether it contributes to the game’s unit total.
- Keep the date attached: The SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS one-million milestone was announced October 28, 2024, and its two-million milestone January 24, 2025. Sonic Frontiers was reported above five million as of August 14, 2026.
These are company-reported unit or download thresholds, not revenue figures. The cited announcements do not provide platform-by-platform breakdowns or describe the milestones as independently audited.
