Sometimes—but not as a universal rule. For AI Overhaul SSE, the author recommends a new game when another AI overhaul has already been used, requires a new save when updating, and says AIO Lite must be started on a new game or a save on which Lite was never active. Compatibility depends on what another mod changes: appearance replacers, AI packages, quests, cities and dialogue can all overlap, while Holds and Immersive Citizens are specifically listed as incompatible.
The safest approach is to identify the exact AI mod and version, preserve a backup of your save and load order, avoid running two full AI overhauls together, and follow the author’s patch and update instructions rather than assuming that every NPC behavior mod is safe to add or remove mid-playthrough.

“New save” can mean three different things in mod documentation:

- Fresh save: use an existing character only if that particular plugin has never been active on it.
- New save after an update: load the game with the updated files, avoid overwriting the previous save, and save to a new slot.
Those distinctions matter because an AI overhaul can place data in an existing save, trigger initialization quests, or alter the package information that NPCs have already evaluated. A mod that uses a quest to initialize itself may be easier to add to an established character than one that directly replaces NPC records, but neither approach is automatically safe to install or remove during a playthrough.

AI Overhaul SSE’s own documentation is deliberately cautious. Its FAQ says to attempt a mid-playthrough change at your own risk and recommends starting a new game if an AI overhaul was already installed. For updates, it says not to save over an old version: manually delete the quicksave, make a new save, and continue from that new slot.
AI Overhaul SSE main versus AIO Lite
The two AI Overhaul SSE variants have materially different save and conflict behavior. The main file (version 1.9.5; the Nexus file page was updated 19 June 2026) directly changes NPC records and adds world markers. AIO Lite uses a quest-based initialization approach and avoids those direct edits.

Lite’s initialization quest begins when you start a new game or load a save with the plugin enabled for the first time. That does not make every mid-playthrough installation risk-free; it means the mod’s documented setup is different from the main file’s direct NPC-record edits. Treat each variant as a separate mod when following update instructions.

Adding your first AI overhaul
There is no blanket guarantee that a first NPC AI overhaul will work on every established save. A clean, already-modded character may load successfully, especially with a quest-based variant, but existing NPC records and other behavior systems can still win conflicts. Back up the character before testing, and check the exact readme for the release you are installing.

Replacing another AI overhaul
This is the case for which AI Overhaul SSE gives its clearest advice: start a new game if another AI overhaul was already installed. Do not assume that uninstalling the first mod and installing the second will remove package data or quest effects already associated with the save. Running two full AI overhauls together is particularly risky because both may try to control the same NPCs.
Updating the main file
For an AI Overhaul SSE main-file update, keep the old save as a fallback, manually delete the quicksave, load the updated setup, and create a new save rather than overwriting the old version. The FAQ also instructs you to wait 24 in-game hours after updating so NPC package data can be reevaluated. The 24-hour wait is an in-game interval, not 24 hours of real time.
Updating AIO Lite
The Lite FAQ requires a new game or a fresh save on which the mod was never active when updating. Do not apply the main-file procedure to Lite by assumption; use the instructions for the specific Lite release and preserve an earlier save in case the initialization quest does not behave as expected.

Removal is not documented as universally safe. Because the main file edits NPC data and adds markers, and because other mods may depend on its records or patches, removing it can leave a save with changed references or different package ownership. If you must remove it, keep a backup, follow the author’s uninstall directions, and be prepared to roll back to a save from before the mod was activated.

How AI Overhaul creates conflicts
The main AI Overhaul file does not edit navmesh and does not use the quest-alias system. Instead, it edits each affected NPC’s AI Data tab, AI Packages list and the packages themselves, then adds idle markers. Any plugin that changes the same NPC records can overwrite some or all of those edits according to load order.
Quest-based AI mods can conflict in a different way. A quest alias may place an NPC under another system’s control even when the underlying NPC record still contains AI Overhaul data. The author’s example uses Run For Your Lives: AI Overhaul makes citizens more cautious during danger, while Run For Your Lives sends all NPCs inside houses. The latter behavior can therefore override the former in the situation covered by its quest.
Navmesh and worldspace edits are a separate compatibility axis. AI Overhaul’s main file does not edit navmesh, which avoids one major class of city-mod conflicts, but a city overhaul can still alter the NPC records, cells or markers that an AI package expects. “Compatible” in a readme normally means compatible under the listed load order and patch conditions, not that every combination has been tested.

Relationship Dialogue Overhaul is listed with an official Patch Hub patch. Install the patch intended for your exact game edition and mod versions, and keep it in the load order position recommended by the patch author.

Installing safely: a practical procedure
- Record your current state. Copy the save to a safe location and export or screenshot the active load order. Keep the old character available instead of relying only on an automatic quicksave.
- Identify the exact AI variant. Confirm whether you are installing AI Overhaul SSE main 1.9.5, AIO Lite, or another mod. Read the release’s installation, compatibility and update notes; similar names do not imply identical save behavior.
- Search for existing AI control. Look through the load order for Immersive Citizens, Holds, another AI overhaul, or a city and NPC mod that edits the same records. If another full AI overhaul is active, plan a new game rather than layering systems.
- Choose patches before launching. Install the author’s or patch hub’s compatibility files for appearance replacers, Relationship Dialogue Overhaul and any other listed overlap. A patch is preferable to guessing which plugin should load last.
- Inspect record conflicts. Use your normal load-order or conflict-resolution utility to see which plugin wins the affected NPC records, AI packages and markers. A “green” plugin status does not prove that every behavior is preserved; inspect the records relevant to your NPC and city mods.
- Launch and test a controlled area. Visit a vanilla settlement and an area changed by your city or population mods. Check several NPCs, guards and followers, then allow enough in-game time for schedules to run.
- After an update, create a new slot. For the main file, delete the quicksave, load with the update, save to a different slot and wait 24 in-game hours for package reevaluation. For Lite, use a new game or a save that never had Lite active.
- Keep the rollback. Do not delete the pre-installation save until the new setup has survived travel, combat, sleeping and a full day-night schedule.
Choosing between NPC AI mods
Before installing any NPC behavior mod, compare it on the same technical questions rather than relying on a popularity label.

Troubleshooting common symptoms
NPCs still behave exactly as before
Allow the documented 24 in-game hours after a main-file update, then check which plugin wins the NPC’s AI records. A quest-based mod may also be overriding the package at runtime. Test with the suspected competing AI plugin disabled only on a disposable profile; do not remove it from your main character casually.
An appearance replacer works but the behavior is wrong
Appearance and AI are separate record concerns. The face may display correctly while another plugin overwrites the NPC’s packages. Install the appropriate appearance/AI patch and verify the resulting NPC record rather than judging compatibility from the character’s looks.
A city overhaul causes odd schedules or idle positions
Check whether the city mod changes interiors, markers or NPC records. “Most city overhauls” are listed as compatible, but a particular city may still need a patch or a load-order adjustment. Compare the affected NPC’s package and marker records with the unmodified version.
Two mods both claim to improve civilian safety
Determine whether one uses direct packages and the other uses quest aliases. The Run For Your Lives example shows how a quest can take precedence during danger even when AI Overhaul remains installed. Keep one authoritative behavior for that situation or use a patch that explicitly combines them.
You installed an incompatible overhaul accidentally
Stop before saving over the only clean slot. Restore the backup or return to a save from before activation, remove the incompatible combination according to its documentation, and start a new game if the replacement author recommends one. Do not expect a quicksave reload to undo every initialized quest or record change.
